This Friday night show at Brooklyn Bowl was my first introduction to the “solo” work of the legendary guitarist Steve Kimock, who led the band Zero until the end of the 90s and has played with just about everybody. This “and Friends” billing featured the collaborators Bernie Worrell (the Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist), his former Zero bandmate Bobby Vega, and drummer Wally Ingram, most famous for his work in Timbuk 3. Once hailed by Jerry Garcia as one of his favorite “unknown guitarists”, Kimock’s star has steadily risen, especially within the improvisational rock community. It’s not hard to see why – like the best guitarists in the genre, Kimock’s style is hard to pin down, though it is most often compared to Garcia himself (perhaps a reason that Kimock has appeared with many post-Dead projects, including The Other Ones). This two hour and 40 minute set was a masterful display of Kimock’s prowess, veering from almost reggae-like numbers and soul jams to heady psychedelic meditations. It also gave me a chance to see John Kimock, who recently played the Backyard Brunch Sessions with his band XVSK, onstage with his dad, as he played second drummer for a majority of the night. XVSK vocalist/cellist Trevor Exter, the other half of XVSK, joined the band for a cover of the Wood Brothers’ “The Luckiest Man”, which is streaming below.
I recorded this set from an optimal position in the venue with the AKG large-diaphragm microphones at a three foot split to provide a maximum soundstage but avoid crowd chatter. The results are excellent, and perhaps my favorite capture from Brooklyn Bowl to date. Enjoy!
Please note that we are updating the files to we have updated the files (as of late Wednesday) to reflect corrected tracking, and that update will be done shortly. We intend to upload this show to the Live Music Archive in a few days. Until then, please don’t upload it for us, there or anywhere else.
