Parlor Walls: October 18, 2018 Saint Vitus Bar

If you haven’t checked out Parlor Walls since their excellent 2017 album, Opposites, then put your headphones in and turn your ears on. This set at Saint Vitus should be a must-listen for those of us who’ve followed Alyse Lamb’s career since the early ’10s, and those new to the party. Three of the newer songs – “Neuromancer”, “Love Complex” and “Low Vulture” are represented on the band’s May 2018 EXO cassette, and are among the band’s best work yet, pushing further into No Wave territory and somewhat away from some of the free jazz flourishes that appeared on Opposites. Parlor Walls’ songs are noisy, astringent documents of our time, complicated, unsettled and at-times brutal. Lamb has always been that special type of performer who doesn’t seem to need an audience; her unflagging intensity comes from within rather than without. (If you don’t believe me, see how she and drummer/keyboardist Chris Mulligan bring it alone in a Paste Magazine sound studio). It’s incredible that she and Mulligan can pack this much into their songs performing as a duo (their albums have additional bandmembers, in the most recent case, multi-instrumentalist Jason Shelton); like the full-time Brooklyn duo Yvette, they fill the stage without the extra bodies. If unrest is the overarching theme of these jittery pre-election days, Parlor Walls is the right soundtrack.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the soundboard combined with house FOH Jeff’s excellent mix. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Parlor Walls: July 22, 2017 The Gutter

I was impressed, but not surprised, by the art-punk band Parlor Walls‘ first full-length, Opposites, released on Northern Spy earlier this year. If you’ve observed the output of Alyse Lamb, from her time in the more pop-driven EULA through Parlor Walls’ Cut EP through today, you observe a consistent upward refinement of craft and a broadening of musical palette. If EULA was the high-energy friend you want to party with, Parlor Walls is her darker, more mysterious older sibling, perhaps a little less approachable, but with more to offer when you do.

This set at the Gutter, hosted by Gimme Tinnitus, made a strong case for the powers of Lamb and her band, now a trio that consists of newest member Jason Shelton on clarinet and Chris Mulligan on drums/synth. If you compare the band’s second-ever show, which we covered, you’ll notice the tighter, more forceful quality of the newer songs right away. Lamb has always been a compelling stage presence, and Opposites provides her the material to let that shine, with songs that brim with a very current type of anxiety. Lamb’s use of repetition recalls some of the more straightforward punk that lives among her influences, but the brooding, barely-contained music behind her gives it a darker tone. You could argue that now is no time for party music, even if there’s a party. If that’s true, that makes Parlor Walls the right kind of guest.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones from an optimal spot in the room. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Parlor Walls: April 15, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Few local musicians are harder working than Alyse Lamb of EULA, a band that has graced almost every stage in Brooklyn (including one of ours) in the past few years. When you watch her perform, you realize that the hard work pays off, not only in terms of her songs, but in her presentation. Lamb knows how to put on a great rock show.

Parlor Walls is a bit of a different beast, a stripped-down duo that finds Lamb joined with Chris Mulligan, who mans the drums and keys at the same time. Parlor Walls’ sound is darker and more atmospheric than EULA’s amped-up pop-punk, though Lamb can’t resist those garagey riffs 100 percent of the time. This night at Glasslands was only the band’s second show, but true to form, Lamb and Mulligan had these songs ready for prime time. Among my favorites were the one-two punch of the intro songs, “Animal”, which jammed straight into “Mississippi”, as well as the hard-edged, discordant closer, “Birthday”. While we’re still EULA fans, Parlor Walls is a great way to get to know Lamb’s darker side. Expect more shows from them (and EULA) in the spring and summer around Brooklyn.

I recorded this set with the flawless house mix of Glasslands head engineer Josh Thiel, combined with our installed Naiant X-R cardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

EULA can be found next on May 28 at Baby’s All Right.
