Ryley Walker: September 6, 2019 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

What else to say about Ryley Walker? We first saw the champ at this festival, Hopscotch, way back in 2014. In that span of 5 years, he’s expanded his sound, produced definitive records (and the definitive Dave Matthews cover album), gotten wild, gotten sober, and hit stages all over the world. As much has changed, his essence hasn’t — a relentlessly searching, gifted musician who doesn’t pause his growth to keep his audience comfortable, but gives that audience his very best every night. If being the top card late at night at Nash Hall wouldn’t seem like the right opportunity for a wild 90-minute set, you need to know more about Ryley.

Beautifully recorded by our bud Randy Hoke, this set has all the elements — some inside-baseball music biz comedy, classic songs (“On the Banks of the Old Kishwaukee”), and of course, long-form improvisation, in particular, the closing “Primrose Green,” which Ryley seemed determined to push as far from its roots as possible. I think he agrees with us that among his many performances this year, this one was a particular winner. Have a listen and I think you’ll agree.

In a useful piece of Ryley news, he’s launched his own private press label, which includes a sold-out LP pressing of his Walker/Jewel/Gunn trio performance from Union Pool back in March. If you’re lucky, you might find a copy out on tour…

Fresh off a longstanding stint as the bassist in Bardo Pond, Clint Takeda has emerged with a new solo project, Double Wig. This show at the annual Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning during Hopscotch was most folks’ first introduction to the project, and Clint made sure to keep us all enthralled with an improvisational piece powered by a number of effects that rendered the sound of Clint’s bass almost unrecognizable as one. These are still early days for Double Wig, with only a few performances or even mentions out there in the wild, so we are excited to see what Clint does with the project.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other shows of the day, with Schoeps MK5c’s on stage, a soundboard feed, and MBHO mics and the Aerco preamp back at the board. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Bill Nace & Samara Lubelski: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

On the heels of a barnburning set by David Nance Group, Bill Nace and Samara Lubelski conjured up a different sort of vibe at the Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning at Kings.

Lubelski and Nace both have extensive musical histories as solo artists, improvisers and collaborators, including with members of Sonic Youth (Lubelski with Thurston Moore in, among other formats, Chelsea Light Moving; Nace most recently in Body/Head with Kim Gordon, but also with Moore and Lubelski). This format — in which the duo have released a self-titled album and recently toured the U.S. — finds Lubelski on violin and Nace on guitar/effects. It’s clear from the cohesiveness of this 28-minute piece that the pair have a natural interplay with each other, as they weave together a piece that you’ll find thought provoking no matter how you choose to interpret it.

I recorded this set primarily with a feed from the soundboard, with the Schoeps MK5 onstage mics providing additional atmosphere. Enjoy!

Straight from the ever-expanding Tunaverse, here’s a double header of shows from last year. The first finds the duo traveling down to Raleigh, North Carolina for the “Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Sommoning,” the yearly Hopscotch day party that’s become one of the festival’s biggest draws. Next is another duo set from last month at Jeff Conklin’s birthday party. Fun was had by all and here’s the documentation to prove it.

While you’re enjoying these live Wet Tuna dispatches, head over to their blog to order Mountain Busted, a 7-CD set of multitracked live shows. I’ve been lost in these recordings for a couple weeks now and the sound is absolutely phenomenal—more than enough reason to dive in head first. The set gets a little sweeter thanks to a trio of Root Cellar gigs with special guest spots from J Mascis, John Moloney, Jim Bliss, and more, that hail from another plane of existence.

I recorded the Union Pool gig from our usual spot at the soundboard, combined with a feed courtesy of Jase Hottenroth. Acidjack recorded the Raleigh show with his usual six track rig at King’s. Both sound excellent. Enjoy!

Long Hots: September 7, 2018 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

I should possibly apologize to Rosali Middleman, one of the three Long Hots, for referring to her guitar playing as “feral” in last year’s review of this band’s Three Lobed / WXDU show, their third ever. If you’ve heard her other work, particularly her outstanding latest record Trouble Anyway, you wouldn’t necessarily know it was the same person as the one shredding on these scuzz-rock numbers. It was more a statement the style of her guitar playing for this band than the, you know, quality. But I digress. A year later, Long Hots continue to be one of Philadelphia’s best up and coming exports. The band’s gritty, garage-style approach recalls Philly brethren Spacin’ and Purling Hiss, and like those bands, the Long Hots can make it feel like a 3 a.m. rager in some hopped-up dirtball’s basement even if they’re actually playing a day show in a much-nicer-than-average local club. This five-song set almost doubled last year’s set in length and at least matched it in intensity, showing us new songs that (one day?) could fill out a full LP. As for now, Long Hots remain “Philadelphia’s most anticipated band” in that respect, as they continue to hone their live chops. You can catch another flavor of that on the band’s sole release, the Monday Night Raw cassette, which is exactly what it sounds like.

I recorded this set with a blend of onstage Schoeps microphones, a pair of mics in the audience, and a soundboard feed. It’s a fun recording. Enjoy!

Hiss Golden Messenger: December 8, 2017 The Bowery Ballroom

Hiss Golden Messenger’s second night at The Bowery Ballroom not only picked up where the first two-hour show left off, but gathered steam. If the first night–in front of a slew of friends and local musicians–felt like a more intimate, freewheeling affair, this show situated the current version of the band as the confident rock n’ roll outfit they are, playing about fifty percent different material from the first show, improving on several of the repeats, and delivering crowd-pleasing covers that are red meat to a weekend crowd. After opening with the contemplative “When the Wall Comes Down” from Hallelujah Anyhow, the tempo picked up and stayed hot through the first hour. I was moved by this version of “Blue Country Mystic,” which hewed closer in tempo and style to the Poor Moon original than some of the recent versions I’ve seen, and likewise, the “Red Rose Nantahala” we saw both tonight and the night before felt closer to the version from Haw than some of the recent versions we’ve heard. The new songs haven’t given the band as many chances at new arrangements, but it’s safe to say that “Like A Mirror Loves A Hammer,” shows great potential as a mid-set jam song.

After a heartfelt mid-set version of “Caledonia, My Love” — introduced by Phil Cook as his favorite HGM song — it was back to the rock, with the band letting loose with a fine cover of “I Won’t Back Down” followed by “Lost Out In the Darkness” and the party jam “I’m A Raven (Shake Children).” This is a band that knows their crowd, and the upbeat rockers matched the mood in the room, as the weekend warriors and the repeat customers from last night both had come ready to celebrate the weekend and the band’s success. Instead of last night’s heartfelt retelling of the band’s origin story, we got some hilarious riffs about the band’s long night out last night, including an encounter with some pretzel chips. But if they were physically running on fumes, HGM didn’t show it. If anything, I found most versions of what they played even sharper and more emphatic than the previous show. In lieu of an encore break, the band accepted some pretzel chips from a fan and passed them around the crowd, ending the night with Pops Staples’ “Friendship” followed by “Drum.” This wasn’t quite the end of HGM year — they headed to Philly the following night, and D.C. after that — but it felt valedictory nonetheless, an exclamation point on a year well spent.

Chuck Johnson: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

As a multitalented musician — a soundtrack composer, rock guitarist, and solo guitarist, among other things — it was nonetheless an exciting turn when the Bay Area (by way of NC) artist Chuck Johnson released Balsams, an album of pedal steel compositions that invented what Pitchfork rightly deemed a new genre unto itself: “country post-rock.” This being the annual Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree at King’s in Raleigh, NC, Johnson did the only-partly-expected, playing a Balsams track, “Riga Black,” but reworking the original into an extended ambient meditation. There’s an undeniable grace and peace to the work that melded perfectly with the afternoon’s inclusive, forward-looking vibe. We never miss a chance to see Chuck in action, and Balsams is yet another evolution the career of a gifted and visionary artist.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage plus a soundboard feed of Evan Lamb’s house mix. The sound quality is outstanding! Note: If you purchased an earlier version (before 10/1/2017) of this from bandcamp, go back and snag this version, as it has been re-mastered to remove some glitches from the original.

Purling Hiss: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

As longtime members of the Purling Hiss bandwagon, we’re always excited to see this band play live, and even more excited by the big-time reception those live shows usually get. That was the story here at the Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree, where the Hiss set found the room at its most-packed point of the day, and for good reason. Mike Polizze and his current cast of co-conspirators (Ben Leaphart on drums, Pat Hickey on bass) brought the full amount of heat to the King’s stage on this sunny mid-afternoon, kicking off with the classic PH tune “Mercury Retrograde” before venturing into a long-haired rock version of Spacemen 3’s “Walking With Jesus.” It was the best kind of cover, abandoning the melodic, low-tempo Brit-psych of the original to boil the song to its rawest essence. After that, we headed into the deep Hiss catalog for “Run From the City” and “Almost Washed My Hair” (2009 and 2010 respectively) before the band sprung a final goodie, a song so new that it doesn’t yet have a name. What we do know about the song is, not-shockingly, it’s a fusillade of hard-charging guitars and ecstatic vibes. Like most things Purling Hiss, it rocks.

I recorded this set with Evan Lamb’s soundboard feed, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Rosali: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

It just wouldn’t make sense to have a talent like Rosali Middleman, who performs as Rosali, show up for a Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch day show and NOT do double duty. So after tearing shit up with the Long Hots earlier in the day, Rosali took the stage again to play her own material, including songs from her forthcoming second LP. Her 2016 debut, Out of Love, arrived like a confident tailwind in a year that was a veritable sea of tumult, and it’s worth revisiting it if you missed it then. This full-band set (featuring Nathan Bowles on drums, Paul Sukeena on guitar, and Dan Provenzano on bass) beefed up certain songs like the key Out of Love opener, “Good Life” as well as making a first (for many of us, at least) showing off new songs like “If I Was Your Heart” and “Dead and Gone.”

These Three Lobed / WXDU day shows tend to have a way of revealing themselves, with the internal logic of the order of (often) wildly divergent styles of bands evident only once you’re standing in the room. Such is the case with Rosali’s position near the end of the day. “Rise To Fall” is a new song of hers, and while certainly the emotional and musical highlight of Rosali’s set, it may also have been that for the whole day, as Middleman’s voice soared over the thick zone of guitars. It felt like an affirmation of all that is right about this day, every year, as a band that had started their set with a measured country-folk number was suddenly blowing the doors off the place with a huge rock song. These shows also have a way of veering from the intellectual to the contemplative to the delightfully weird, but somewhere, there’s always the urgent, throbbing heart, and for me, that was this moment. I can’t even give you a link to Long Hots on the Internet, because there ain’t one. But maybe you’ve heard of such bands as Rosali, Hothead, and Spacin‘. Ah, right, now you get the idea. So named for a kind of hot pepper, I assure that this band is prepared to bring the fire. My now-annual journey to the Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree is never complete without a total surprise, and seeing “Philadelphia’s most anticipated band” playing their third-ever show was certainly one of them. These women didn’t spend a long time onstage, but they used their fifteen minutes well, handing us two doses of feral guitar shredding and general disrespect for the integrity of our eardrums. This band played their fourth show, the following night, with Purling Hiss, so if you didn’t figure out the RIYL on this one, I can’t help you. Head over to bandcamp, throw these powerful women some love, and make sure some more Long Hots is in your future.
