Now in its 12th year, Mountain Jam has established itself as a destination event for a wide variety of artists from a large array of styles. And yet over those dozen years, festival co-founder Warren Haynes has performed with Govt Mule for every single year — generally in the featured spot on Friday or Saturday night. This year, the Mule played the headline set on Friday after an abbreviated set by Wilco (here).

Since its his weekend, Haynes’ Govt Mule was unlimited in their time to play and performed a nearly three hour set that went late into the night. On display were the standard special aspects of the Mule Mountain Jam sets, including special guests, extended jam segments, and a plethora of covers. For this particular show, the highlight was most certainly when the Mule was joined by Marcus King and the horn section from his band for a blistering version of the Tower of Power classic “What Is Hip” that spanned a full seventeen minutes of superb multi-genre jamming.

Warren Haynes is currently on tour playing solo shows in Europe before returning to the US for several nights with the Garcia Symphonic Celebration before Govt Mule returns to touring in the Fall. All dates here.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Wilco set and the quality is equally outstanding. Enjoy!

Warren Haynes: August 1, 2015 Gathering of the Vibes (Bridgeport, CT) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Warren Haynes may love playing music more than anyone. How else can you explain his innumerable appearances on the summer festival circuit, from his own Mountain Jam, to others such as Gathering of the Vibes, where once again he played two lengthy sets in one day? This one, with Railroad Earth as his backing band, showed off some of Warren’s solo material, which is of a piece with his Gov’t Mule work — blues-inflected rock with an eye toward tradition, freshened for the modern audience. Also in line with Warren’s Mule sets, after kicking off with his own songs like “Company Man,” Warren and RRE headed into cover territory, firing off Grateful Dead’s “China Doll” (joined by Bill Kreutzmann) and Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman,” among others. As always, nobody was having a better time than Warren, who shredded through the songs with a vigor that would impress someone half his age. I can’t imagine a music festival without him.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the official taper’s section. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Gov’t Mule: June 6, 2015 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Pretty much everything to like about Mountain Jam flows from Warren Haynes and his band Gov’t Mule. As one of the original founders of the festival, Haynes and his fellow participants in Radio Woodstock built something that grew organically around the kind of music they wanted to make and to listen to. That means 60s and 70s-inspired music with improvisational leanings that usually returns to its classic rock core — a pretty apt description of Gov’t Mule. Since the festival was purchased by an app company, some of that magic has been lost in favor of the expected deluge of commercialization and lineup considerations that tend more toward packing in the day-trippers versus creating a cohesive vibe. So, as irritating as it might have been to realize that Mule would be followed by a derivative band with no business being there, it felt good to enjoy what they were doing, and be grateful that they were still giving it their all. In fact, this was Mule’s second outing at the festival, after their epic “Dark Side of the Mule” set from the night before, to go with their latest album. So, if this set was “only” two hours, Mule can more than be forgiven. Perhaps in a covering mood after the night of Floyd just before, Mule closed this one out with a slew of covers, including “Working Class Hero,” “She Said She Said,” “Tomorrow Never Comes,” and a version of the band’s own “Mule” that featured an extended jam into Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” No matter how things may change, you can’t say that Mule doesn’t respect the past.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4 microphones and a Sonosax high-end analog preamp. The sound quality is quite good. Enjoy!

Gov’t Mule: June 7, 2014 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY)

Guitarist Warren Haynes is a busy man, playing in multiple iterations of Grateful Dead-related bands (including the recent Phil Lesh and Friends that we documented), The Allman Brothers, and of course, Gov’t Mule. On top of all that, Warren continues to play an integral role in the Mountain Jam festival that he founded, where Mule can be counted on for a spectacle of a Saturday set. This year’s version was three and half hours of guitar pyrotechnics and a host of especially inspired covers. Along with an encore of three consecutive Doors songs, we got to see Mule’s version of the song that made Radiohead famous, “Creep”. Even if Haynes’ vocals and persona don’t convey the sense of self-loathing and alienation that Thom Yorke does so effortlessly, Mule’s version was nonetheless a notable one. The set also echoed recent Mule Mountain Jam successes, with a fiery rendition of “Brighter Days”, which kicked off Mountain Jam VIII (that set here), and last year’s set opener, “Broke Down On the Brazos” (that set here). As is also a Mule tradition, the band was joined by a slew of special guests, including Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, who played their own set just before this one, along with Jackie Greene and Soulive’s Eric Krasno. No Mountain Jam is complete without the Mule, and this one was yet another winner.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones and an extra-warm Aerco custom preamp. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Govt Mule: June 8, 2013 Mountain Jam – Flac/MP3/Streaming

As one of the organizers of Mountain Jam, Warren Haynes sure knows how to throw a party. This year was the ninth annual festival on Hunter Mountain and it was also the first time that the nyctaper crew attended the entire event, after a one-day flirtation last year. While Warren performed on various stages with a whole bunch of bands, much of which we recorded, the Saturday night performance of his main band Govt Mule is always the centerpiece of the Jam. This year the band performed two sets over a four hour period. The first set was primarily original Mule material, although one of the set one highlights was the jam in the middle of a twelve-minute “Effigy” that made a quick run through Johnny Cash’s “Folson Prison Blues”. But it was the second set where the band really shined, particularly in some stunning covers. We are streaming the Etta James classic “I’d Rather Go Blind”, which featured a stage-full of guests, including the Soulive horns, Bill Evans on sax, and guest vocals from Alecia Chakour. This song was the number one highlight of the entire festival for me personally during three days of music where there were countless highlights. Govt Mule will be on the Festival circuit for the entire summer starting in Europe before returning to the US in July.

The taping situation at Mountain Jam is certainly friendly. While the stages are at the bottom of the hill directly in front of the ski resort buildings, the tapers are in an advantageous position farther up the hill eye-level with the huge stacks. We utilized the Neumann TLM-102 cardioids for the entire festival because they are warm and full bodied in an outdoor setting. The Mule set was mixed particularly well, and the combination of the location, the mics and the house mix has yielded a simply superb recording — perhaps my best outdoor recording ever. Enjoy!

If you’re a doubter of “jamband festivals”, this Gov’t Mule performance from Mountain Jam alone might make you reconsider. Three of us from the NYCTaper crew came out for Saturday of this year’s Mountain Jam, held at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in Hunter, NY, and the Mule was that day’s main attraction for a number of reasons. The fact that they are a legendary live band was only part of the picture this time; this particular performance also honored the late, great Levon Helm with a set that found the Mule joining the Levon Helm Band for a tribute that no doubt would have found favor with the man. On a misty night against a verdant Catskills backdrop, Mule and guitarist Warren Haynes gave a life-affirming performance that could turn the coldest cynic on to the power of music. Mountains are often used as a metaphor for the obstacles that define human struggle. This night’s music – played against those gorgeous peaks – demonstrated music’s power to transcend even death. As a series of well-known players joined the band onstage for songs from Mule, Helm and history, we were reminded note after note how lucky we are: to be listening, to be here, to be alive. For us – and I guess it’s fair to call us “city people” – this night was a reminder of the grandeur that lies beyond our steel and glass borders. Mule gave us everything they had until the mist had soaked us all. But most importantly, they gave us a chance to give thanks to those who were gone as well as those who were there with us.

Each of the three of us who were at the show recorded this set, and below we are offering two sources: First, hi and lo’s recording with Schoeps MK21s, and second, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy’s Audio Technica cardiods paired with my AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics, set to “wide cardiod mode.” Both recordings stand out in their own way and offer different “flavors” to enjoy.
