Pile is one of those bands who you thought was your little secret and suddenly there are 500 people at their show. There’s something to be said for a band that grows its fanbase steadily and organically through consistently solid shows and records. Pile has existed for more than ten years and since signing to the most excellent Exploding In Sound Records in 2011, the trend has continued upward. The last couple of years have been remarkable. We saw them in 2015 at SXSW before a modest crowd and then later 2015 before a couple of hundred at Baby’s All Right. Earlier this year, we captured their sold out show at Sunnyvale. But a couple of weeks ago Pile sold out five-hundred strong at Market Hotel.

Buoyed by the band’s most recent album, the superb A Hairshirt of Purpose, Pile has finally and deservedly arrived. The Market Hotel offers a nice companion to the Pile experience, both are authentically DIY. The packed-in fans responded in kind, singing along to all of the lyrics showing true appreciation for the older obscure numbers that the band whipped out late in the set. The setlist for this show was heavy on Hairshirt material, but also delved into their self-released 2011 7″ (“Scissors”), “Pigeon Song” from the Boston Hassle compilation, and a couple of songs from the early Dripping album. We expect to see Pile again as often as possible, and hopefully at Market Hotel in the Spring or Summer.

This recording was captured by FOH Harrison utilizing the internal USB drive recording device on the Market Hotel’s Behringer X32 Soundboard. For a straight board feed from a smallish room, this recording is quite well balanced other than somewhat more prominent vocals. Enjoy!

Jeff Rosenstock: November 18, 2016 Villain BK

It is an objective fact that Jeff Rosenstock released one of the best albums of 2016, if not the best record of the year. WORRY is a work that exhibits all of the positive qualities of contemporary punk by one of the genre’s most consistently excellent and prolific performers over the last two decades. During that time, Rosenstock has been a virtually unlimited fount of quality music, having participated as band member, contributor or producer in something like thirty albums in the last fifteen years. But Rosenstock’s recent solo albums may be his highest quality output of his career. WORRY builds on the overwhelming success of his excellent 2015 album We Cool?. The fan response to it crashed the SideOneDummy Records website on the day of its release.

WORRY is album that walks the listener through a set of modern problems in a series of songs that touch on multiple genres all anchored by the indefatigable Jeff Rosenstock. Early in his career Rosenstock fronted a ska-punk band and then an anarchist-punk band but in his late thirties he’s now not beholden to any particular genre. The album touches on themes of loneliness, oppression, politics and music — all of which are pointless without our emotional investment in other people. Indeed “…While You’re Alive” concludes as the penultimate track on the record, by declaring that ultimately “Love is Worry”. We may never be able to achieve a perfect existence (“Perfect Sound Whatever”), but if we appreciate the small events, we’ll be truly alive. Its a simple but effective message from a performer who has spent his career confronting negativity and apathy with a singular work ethic and drive.

The Jeff Rosenstock Fall Tour came to a close on a cold November night in a converted warehouse in Brooklyn a mere ten days after perhaps the most devastating political moment of our lives. The final night of the tour was filled with much love and appreciation for the bands and fans who had supported him throughout, but the night was also fueled by purposeful rage and resistance. Rosenstock dealt with these issues throughout the set but also focused on the healing power of music. The set drew primarily from We Cool? and WORRY material, including an epic segue of the last eleven songs from WORRY to close the set. The band encored with “Police on My Back”, which Rosenstock unfortunately noted as a Clash song. Perhaps the only down moment of the night was that he failed to call attention to the composers of that song, The Equals — a 1960s racially-integrated London band who experienced actual police oppression of immigrant culture. Its a theme sadly still relevant nearly fifty years after the release of that song. Otherwise, the night was an inspiration and Jeff Rosenstock continues to cement his status as perhaps the most important punk artist composing today. Moving forward through 2017 and after, we’re going to need artists like Rosenstock whose life’s work is hell bent on resisting the wave of hate and intolerance bubbling up from the worst aspects of our society.

Jeff Rosenstock is back on tour next month, including two local shows. The just-announced Antarctigo Vespucci (Rosenstock and Chris Farren) show at Trans-Pecos is February 11, and a Jeff Rosenstock date opening for Menzingers at Irving Plaza is on March 30. All dates HERE.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers mounted at the soundboard on the far right and mixed with a board feed. The balance and mix took a while the get right but I believe this is now an excellent recording that definitely captures the energy of that great night. Enjoy!

Bear vs Shark: September 28, 2016 Market Hotel

Its not particularly uncommon for bands to be more popular in a reunion than they were originally. In the early part of last decade, the post-hardcore/math-rock/screamo band Bear vs Shark released two albums with Equal Vision Records that were pretty well received. But here we are more than ten years later and many current bands sound very much like Bear vs Shark. If they’re not directly cited as an influence, their sound can definitely be heard within the works of more recent artists.

All that being said, the best way to measure the influence of Bear vs Shark in 2016 is to measure the reaction to their reunion announcement. The tour included a date at Market Hotel that sold out within hours and other dates were similarly quick sell-outs. At Market last week, the entire front half of the packed-in crowd literally sang along with every word of every song — you can hear them on this recording. Indeed, lead singer Marc Paffi let the crowd finish verses multiple times throughout the night. And what a night it was. Bear vs Shark played every song that they’d re-learned for the reunion tour in a show that lasted almost ninety minutes and covered seventeen separate numbers. But the night was really all about the interaction between the generous and thankful band and the rabid fans, both of whom expended all of their energy by the end of a truly outstanding show.

LVL UP: September 24, 2016 Market Hotel

On Friday LVL UP released their new album Return To Love, their first for legendary record label Sub Pop. The album is a superb collection of songs from the band’s three songwriters that indicate a large mix of influences but ultimately seems utterly original. The day after the band released the album, LVL UP celebrated with a sold-out show at Market Hotel that was as joyous as it was well-deserved.

LVL UP are four friends who’ve played music together since college, put together a record label for their own releases and for the release of their friends, moved to NYC and played a lot of shows. And at Market, it was clear just how many friends they’ve made — between the advanced ticket sales, the packed crowd, and the idea that most of these fans seemed to know each other (the band’s parents were even there). LVL UP responded with a set that was both high on energy and also showed that the guys were moved by the outpouring of support. But this was a record release show after all and LVL UP did not disappoint. They played “side one” of the album straight through to start the show and then played a few older numbers. LVL UP then finished the set with “side two” of the album before being called back for a couple of encores.

LVL UP will tour across the US throughout the months of September and October and through to the middle of November, including a date opening for Bear Vs Shark at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday. All dates are here.

PS Eliot: September 15, 2016 Market Hotel

On Saturday December 9, 2011, PS Eliot played its “final” show at Death By Audio in Brooklyn in front of less than 100 people. A lot has changed in the subsequent five years not the least of which is the enormous success enjoyed by the two sisters who anchored the original band. Katie Crutchfield’s Waxahatchee has released three well-received albums and is currently signed to Merge Records, and Allison Crutchfield’s band Swearin’ has also released two excellent albums and Allison recently signed as a solo artist also with Merge. Although the band played a brief one-off reunion at Silent Barn in 2013, this year became the right time to look back and do the full-on reunion. Earlier this year Don Giovanni Records released 2007-2011, a thorough compilation of the band’s original discography, which also includes bonus home demos and a complete oral history of the band in zine format that was assembled by the writer Liz Pelly.

The release of the complete discography has also fortunately been accompanied by a band reunion and a mini-tour. The Crutchfield sisters joined again with bassist Katherine Simonetti and guitarist Will Granger to play a six-date tour that included stops in San Francisco and Chicago and completed with a headlining spot at Don Giovanni’s New Alternative Music Festival this past Friday and two final dates at Philadelphia’s MOCA last night and tonight.

The fourth date of the tour was at our own Market Hotel on Thursday when the band played in front of more than 500 people. From the very outset PS Eliot and crowd were fully engaged in the experience. Throughout the night, the Crutchfield sisters were out and about at the Market and there were a lot of excited greetings and hugs for old friends. When the set began it was clear that the quartet were fully in sync and for the hour-long set they passed around a bottle of pink champagne while they worked through a large assortment of classic PS Eliot material. The band was tight, energetic and seemed to be having a great time. If playing PS Eliot material is this much fun for the group, I would venture a prediction that this is not the last we will see of them. And that would be great news.
