We have taped so many shows in the last two months that the backlog of recordings is approaching 30 different sets. There are still CMJ shows that have not been posted! That being said, we will continue to be very active during the Winter, recording a large variety of artists.

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember I’m doing this all for free — the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc. — so treat me fairly.

NYCTaper Upcoming Events – Fall into Winter (Including CMJ!)

October 3, 2009

This is a great time for nyctaper.com. We have had a very successful run of recording outings in the last month. Readership has doubled since this time last year. The addition of acidjack as a regular contributor has been a godsend. The site is now producing recordings at a much higher rate and with consistently higher quality. In fact, this week we did a first for NYCTaper — two shows recorded the same night and posted within hours!

The Fall and Winter continue along the same path — many excellent shows and many opportunities to bring outstanding music to our readers. CMJ is especially packed this year and we expect to record many shows during that week. We hope these salad days continue unabated!

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. We had a nice bit of recognition this week from some traditional media — the Village Voice covered our recording of The Mountain Goats show on March 27, and the Wall Street Journal online edition had a little blurb about nyctaper.com.

We also have permission to record the Dead Milkmen show at Warsaw on Friday April 16, and a free ticket to give away to any taper willing to catch the show for the site. I will be away and our correspondents are also unavailable that night so need a taper to cover the show.

Upcoming Shows:

North Mississippi All-Stars:
April 9, 2009 Highline Ballroom NYC

Of Montreal: (correspondent)
April 15, 2009 Music Hall of Williamsburg

Crystal Stilts/Mahogany/Motel Motel (Music Snobbery Anniversary Show):

John Vanderslice: March 27, 2009 Ethical Culture Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

April 4, 2009
By

[photo courtesy of dollabill and Thom – more here]

This is an exciting time for fans of John Vanderslice. He is currently on tour with one of his compatriots, John Darnielle, with whom he will soon release an EP (Moon Colony Bloodbath). On May 19, JV will release his first full-length album in two years, the much-anticipated Romanian Names, and in May, he will tour with a band in support of the new album.

On Friday last, the “Gone Primitive” tour with The Mountain Goats came to NYC and JV’s short but sweet opening set featured several songs from Romanian Names, a track the Moon Colony EP, and some of John’s classic numbers. John also chatted amiably with the crowd and told a few stories. Its always a pleasure to attend a Vanderslice show and this night was no exception.

We recorded this set from the same location as The Mountain Goats recording, and while the same volume fluctuation problems exist, the issues were not as drastic for this set. There was still quite a bit of post-production work necessary, but we feel the work has given our readers a quite enjoyable listen of this excellent artist. Enjoy!

This Recording is now available for Download in FLAC or MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].

NYCTaper Update: The Sting of Rejection

March 9, 2009
By

Over the last couple of weeks, we have had a bad time of it in terms of receiving permission from bands to record. Obviously, we respect the artist’s request to refrain from recording their performance, but nevertheless its pretty frustrating. On February 28, we had excellent seats for the Grizzly Bear special show at BAM, but their management asked us not to record. The following day, unauthorized poor quality recordings were all over the web and we were incredibly disappointed that such a show was archived and circulated in such a manner [edit: we just received a friendly email from the band that informed us that it was a venue issue and not the band’s decision].

Later that week, Dan Auerbach’s management denied a request to capture his Bowery show, despite the fact that The Black Keys permit open taping. That was a bit of a head-scratcher. And finally, a few days ago we received word that Throbbing Gristle does not want their first NYC show ever archived — we are not permitted to record the Masonic Temple show.

A large part of the frustration of such rejection is the fear that this site has not gotten its message across to the bands — that somehow we’re still stigmatized by the very old idea that tapers are “bootleggers”.

Ultimately, the good news is that the rejections are still the exception — the vast majority of artists that we approach do accept and understand the positive aspects of what nyctaper does for the bands and fans.

And in the spirit of soldiering on, we have added some new shows to the list below.

NYCTaper Update: Spring Ahead

February 12, 2009
By

63_taperbird

Its been a nice couple of weeks for nyctaper. We again received recognition and links for our Wavves recording on such sites as Pitchfork, Stereogum, Gorilla vs. Bear, Largehearted Boy and Fader. The server withstood the rush of visits and downloads with only a few short instances of downtime.

We have received a few “tire-kicking” inquiries from potential “white knights”, but ultimately we’re still on the same server and have the same limitations. We do still need a new server, but there do not seem to be any viable options at this point. In the meantime, we will continue to chug along.

NYCTaper Updates: The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

January 25, 2009
By

The past week saw an increase in volume of visits to the site by a mere 500%. In an alignment-of-the-planets-fashion, Animal Collective reached peak popularity, started a tour and played two NYC shows that we captured with two excellent recordings — Bowery is one of our best captures ever. Its rewarding to receive recognition from some of the most established music sites on the web, including Pitchfork, Gorilla vs Bear, largeheartedboy and Stereogum, along with a host of other fine sites.

The problem of course is that the drastic increase in volume crashed the server on Wednesday morning. We allocated more memory (at more cost) on three separate occasions on Wednesday and Thursday and finally just moved the Animal Collective files to archive.org. The high volume of visits continue and more downtime resulted today. Ultimately our host server responded with a virtual shrug of the shoulders. We paid extra for a private server, but apparently this kind of traffic is not even something that upgrade can handle. We continue to search for solutions, but obviously we are hand-tied by the fact that this is an ad-free site and donations cover less than half of the monthly server fees alone. All other operating costs (equipment, media, travel, tickets, bandwidth, etc) we pay out of pocket.

What it boils down to is that nyctaper needs a white knight/site sponsor — something akin to the massive free servers of archive.org but on a single site scale. We do not want to place ads on the site and lose our credibility and compromise our objectivity. If any of our readers have ideas or suggestions, feel free to email them.

Lost in all this new found flavor-of-the-week temporary popularity is the type of recognition that we truly value. Largehearted Boy and Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, two sites who we read regularly and respect greatly have both listed us in their “10 Blogs to Read in 2009” lists. Many thanks to the two classy gentlemen who run both of those superb sites.

We have added some exciting new shows to the schedule listed below.
