nyctaper Update

November 15, 2007
By

Its been an exciting month thus far in November. Even after the unfortunate cancellation of the two Decemberists concerts, we still recorded and posted 6 concerts in the first 10 days of the month. There have been several “firsts” in November, including our first four-consecutive night recordings, our first 4-microphone mix, and our first 24-bit recording. Additionally, nyctaper would like to thank our readers for the many emails of encouragement and support received in the last few weeks.

You’ll notice that in the upcoming events posted below, we have added a February concert. We are happy to report that nyctaper will continue past the new year.

We are still on the look-out for decent Neil Young tickets at an affordable price. All of the United Palace concerts are sold out, but we are looking for the first few rows of the lower balcony for any night.

There’s a lot to talk about this morning.

The Shins

Apologies to Shins fans waiting for the recording from last night. I did not attend, and wasted my ticket. Between the rain, my not feeling well, and lackluster reviews of the show and the venue, I did not really feel up to attending.

Server Outages and new Server Limits:

The Springsteen and Morrissey recordings have brought users to this site in record numbers. The total number of visits the day after the Springsteen concert was 118,000, roughly 5 times the record number of hits for a day on this site. The record number of visits have continued throughout the week. Those numbers have essentially crashed the server on multiple occasions, and have brought download speeds down to a trickle.

Unfortunately, my host has now put limits on my server capacity. The total number of visitors at any given time is limited to 150 distinct ip addresses. The total number of files one user can download at once is now limited to 5. And upload speed from the server has been capped at 2.5 megabytes per second. That’s a lot of speed if you’re downloading alone, but a slow speed if you divide it by 150.

There have been complaints and frustrations communicated in various forums on the web about the crashes and the speed reductions. I understand these complaints, but want users to know that these limits come from the host, and are a direct result of the popularity of the site.

Support the Artists:

I am capable of tracking the total number of purchases of official CD’s that are made through links on this site. I must say that I am profoundly disappointed at the number of people who download from this site, and the subsequent lack of purchases of official releases. I understand that of the 5000 people who downloaded Springsteen, most if not all of them already own Magic, or of the 3000 people who have downloaded Bjork, most or all already bought Volta.

It is the goal of this site that those 8000 people be exposed to other artists, and support those artists. Springsteen fans would be more than happy with the music of The Hold Steady, or The National, and Bjork fans would love Regina Spektor, or Animal Collective, or Kria Brekkan. In other words, if you already own Volta, click on the link and buy Begin to Hope!

nyctaper is currently considering implementing a limitation of downloads, where access would only be granted if confirmation of purchase of the official release is offered. This is something that we don’t want to install, but may be forced to do if users do not support the bands.

Support the Site:

The plan for this site was that donations and ad revenue would make it a not-too-expensive proposition. nyctaper was willing to operate at a loss in order to be able to implement a new model of music exchange and artist promotion. In this regard, the site has been a complete failure. The total number of donations thus far has amounted to $134. That represents less the price of the ticket for Springsteen. Commission ad revenue has generated zero. We did not envision being in the hole for roughly 12 thousand dollars within six months of the opening of the site.

Ironically, today we were accused of being bootleggers.

Plans for the Future:

At this point, nyctaper will continue to exist until the end of the shows listed below. We can not continue to afford to operate past that period without any significant user support.

of Montreal – Roseland Concert Preview – Bonus Lossless Download March 9, 2007

October 11, 2007

of Montreal‘s Hissing Fauna is on the short list of best CDs of 2007. On Saturday October 13, they return to New York for a performance at Roseland Ballroom. The two sold-out shows in March were outstanding, and featured a healthy dose of the new album. The word is that there are new unreleased songs in the setlist this tour from a forthcoming album tentatively called “Skeletal Lamping”. I will be there with my microphones and stand, since lead guitarist “The Late B.P. Helium” has given me permission to record this show.

In March, I was fortunate to have attended one of the Irving Plaza concerts, and also recorded with permission. Thanks to the of Montreal staff and Irving Plaza, I was able to set up my microphone stand in the center of the floor in front of the soundboard overhang. The results are excellent.

Sigur Ros – October 6, 2007 Gould Hall – Lossless Download

October 7, 2007
By

Sigur Ros are set to release Heima, the documentary about their 2006 tour through all of Iceland. Advanced screenings have been available in half-dozen cities worldwide, and last night New York was treated to 2 screenings, a 7pm and a Midnight show. I was fortunate to get a ticket to the late show, which was announced just a few days ago. The bonus for all the screenings has been a brief 3-song live acoustic set by Sigur Ros.

The documentary contains a stunning visual portrayal of Iceland–a unique magical land–with a soundtrack of powerful live performances by Sigur Ros. The majority of the film follows Sigur Ros through the unpopulated upper regions of Iceland, where they perform in locales such as an open field, a town square, and an abandoned fish factory. The band discusses their experiences with detail, humor, and true appreciation for their homeland. This film is due to be released on DVD in November and is undoubtedly a must buy for even the most casual fan of Sigur Ros or Iceland in general. Watch the trailer here.

I recorded the 3-song acoustic set, and offer it for download below. Unfortunately, I did a below average job of capturing this performance. I did not re-set my levels from the Fiery Furnaces concert I had recorded hours ago (from 10 feet in front of the PA), and as a result the master recording has extremely low levels. When I raised levels significantly in post-production, obvious hiss was present. Caveat listener.

Morrissey at Madison Square Garden – Postponed

June 29, 2007
By

Morrissey became ill during his Boston concert earlier this week. Northhampton and Philadelphia concerts were postponed that evening, with the expectation that Moz would return to the stage for New York City.

A short time ago, it was announced that Madison Square Garden has now also been postponed.
Here is the Pollstar Report.

nyctaper will attend and record on the new date (probably September). But at this point, I have an open taping night on Saturday June 30, and no plans. If any readers have NYC recording suggestions, requests, or ideas … Email nyctaper

Got an extra ticket, I’ll tape the show for you!

[EDIT]

Thanks for all the suggestions in email.  I will be attending and recording the Fiery Furnaces concert at Maxwell’s in Hoboken.

Superchunk: September 28, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

September 30, 2013

I don’t believe its quite accurate to say that Superchunk is the best working band in America today, but you’d be hard pressed to name one that’s actually better. For more than two decades, minus a few years hiatus, Superchunk has consistently released high quality albums filled with excellent songs. There’s not a clunker among any of their ten studio albums — heck, there isn’t even a bad song in their catalog. The newest release came out last month, and I Hate Music not only continues the streak, but its one of the strongest albums in their history. The band is currently on tour in support of the album and performed two shows at Bowery Ballroom this weekend, and we were there for Saturday’s barnburner. Superchunk opened the show on high octane, working through a democratic mix of songs from the new album interspersed with the classics in an hour-long set that barely came up for air. And the very-sold out crowd was with them throughout. From our standard balcony perch we could see the craziness on the floor, but the manic crowd response even spread to the balcony itself, where we witnessed enough pogoing to shake the floor of the upper deck. But it was in the ten song encore segment where all hell broke loose. The band welcomed out Merge recording artist Eleanor Friedberger for two legendary punk covers (we’re streaming the Patti Smith one below) and then just continued to play a series of their own deep tracks in maniacal fashion. The show reached its climax when Mac laid down his guitar, took over behind the kit and drummer Jon Wurster came out to deliver a couple of hardcore covers to end the night.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed. There is a couple of minutes of static near the very end of the set caused by a problematic mic on the snare drum, but otherwise this is a superb capture. Enjoy!

We will also have a recording of the first night of Superchunk’s Bowery shows. That recording should be available by the end of the week.
