I’ll admit to being partial to the noisy and aggressive side of Yo La Tengo’s music. Perhaps due to the presence of Mission of Burma on the bill, or that MOB’s tech wiz Bob Weston participated in the YLT set, but this Sunday night of Hanukkah was the noisiest overall of the eight shows — and also my personal favorite. Early in the set, “Periodically Double or Triple” led directly into “The Room Got Heavy”, for the first energetic noisy segue of the night, but it was the show’s finale that set this night apart. Ira shed some blood (see photo) while switching guitars before the Richard Hell song, but as soon as the punk legend was covered the band ratcheted it up a notch. A ferocious “Drug Test” led into the punk version of “Double Dare” before giving way to the massive “Sugarcube” that finished with a cacophony of feedback, loops and guitar fuzz. “Mushroom Cloud of Hiss” rose out of the chaos and ended the set with more Weston-inspired sheets of sonic bliss. When the crowd caught its breath, the band returned with Mission of Burma and treated us to a mini-set of covers that closed with all six members of the two bands on stage together for an extended version of Dred Foole’s “So Tough” — a 1982 song that featured the three MOB members as “The Din”.

We recorded this set with the DPA 4021’s set up in the standard front right corner spot of the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent board feed. Acidjack also ran a Schoeps pair, but the synchronization of the six-channel source will take more post-production time. We will work in another version of this recording in the future, but for now this four-track version is still quite superb. Enjoy!

The Mission of Burma set was also recorded and will be featured in the coming days.

Yo La Tengo‘s set at the first night of Hannukah 2010 began as all Elvis Presley shows started in the 1970’s — with the theme music from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was only a slight surprise then, although still bizarre, that the music kicked off with the appearance of a local Elvis impersonator for the opening “One Night With You”, appropriately re-titled for “Eight Nights”. The horn section fortuitously stayed on stage for several more numbers which added a nice touch to familiar songs — including “Mr. Tough” streaming below. When the stage was cleared of guests, the trio worked through a set of YLT classics, both quiet and noisy, before ending the set with an epic fourteen minute “I Heard You Looking”. After a lengthy YLT set, the encore segment was somewhat truncated, but did feature the surprise appearance of Nash Kato (Urge Overkill) on the obligatory Neil Diamond cover. “Elvis” returned to close the show before leaving the building.

We recorded this set with four microphones spaced in front of the soundboard booth and mixed with a mono soundboard feed. The DPAs were used to add some “warmth” to the sound, while the Neumanns are especially strong with the instrumental clarity. We are extremely pleased with the superb sound quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo has stayed fresh for over two decades by consistently keeping fans on their toes with the unpredictable. On Monday night, in an opening slot for 12,000 Wilco fans, one might have expected a fairly straightforward accessible set from YLT. Instead the band delivered an hour of fuzz and crackle anchored by the complete madness of the twenty minute closer “The Story of Yo La Tango”. While the set left casual listeners with raised eyebrows, those who listened closely were treated to an hour of what makes Yo La Tengo special. Also featured in the set were three songs from Popular Songs, the new album due in September.

We recorded from the same location as the Wilco recording, but the wind was heavier during this set. While there was also more chatter during the YLT opening, there were significantly fewer people in the venue so that the crowd din is also lower. Overall, this is certainly a fine recording although not of the quality of our several YLT Hannukah Maxwell’s recordings. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 27, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

At night seven of the Hanukkah celebration, Yo La Tengo displayed the most compelling characteristics of the band — their versatility and encyclopedic knowledge of popular music. As the band took the stage with an aggressive “Sugarcube”, the expectation was that the set would feature the rocking YLT. In a neat flip, the band followed the opener with 45 minutes of their most mellow music. The quiet set was accompanied by the outstanding contributions of David Mansfield on violin and pedal steel. As if a switch was hit, Yo La Tengo then completely changed gears for the second half of the set and raged through a noisy medley of their punk-tinged material, highlighted by a wild “Mushroom Cloud of Hiss”.

The encore set featured guest vocalist Willie Alexander, whose Boom Boom Band had opened the night. Following three thoroughly obscure garage rock numbers, the night closed with two familiar classics — the Boom Boom version of “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling” and a cringeworthy take on Lulu’s “To Sir With Love” with David Cross on vocals.

We recorded from the identical location as night two, and the quality is equally outstanding. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 24, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

review by neild
On Wednesday, the fourth night of Yo La Tengo‘s Hanukkah celebration, the band performed an odd show — no special guests at all, just the usual trio for the entire set. What made it special was the setlist, which went deep into the band’s catalog to dig up such rarely heard gems as “Tiny Birds,” “Paul Is Dead,” “Upside Down,” and “Detouring America With Horns,” as well as covers of Sparks and the Velvet Underground, and exceptional versions of “Autumn Sweater” and “Blue Line Swinger.” There were technical problems all around – James’ bass was way too loud at first, one of Georgia’s drum mics was on the fritz, there was a steady stream of water drizzling onto the stage from a ceiling vent, and my recording setup generated some odd pops at random places – but all in all a very good YLT show, and a nice complement to some of the more star-studded nights of Hanukkah.

nyctaper: For the post-production on this recording, I boosted levels overall and more for the quieter numbers. With the loose cable static problem (“odd pops”), I could not fix the problem, so I just deleted the sections of noise, which were strategically placed outside the music except for two short sections of “Drug Test”. Overall though, another terrific job by neild.

Yo La Tengo: December 23, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + News

December 24, 2008

If the third night of Yo La Tengo‘s annual Hanukkah celebration at Maxwell’s did not have the big name guests as in previous nights and years, our hosts more than made up for the deficit with a smoking ninety-minute set that alternated between quiet lithe numbers and absolute shredding. Yo La Tengo were joined for the entire set by the superb guitarist Smokey Hormel. His contributions to the set were tasty and appropriate. The highlights of the set (there were many) include the Dylan cover of “I Wanna Be Your Lover”, Neil Diamond’s (via the Monkees) classic “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You” and the closer — a fourteen minute maniacal version of “I Heard You Looking”.

The sound quality in the venue was mixed to perfection. We recorded from the prime location in this venue, and the quality of this recording is really excellent. We could not be happier with this capture. Enjoy!

News: We learned last night that Antietam will open for YLT at the December 25th show, and that the actor Tim Roth will also appear (for a spoken word piece) later in the week — likely on Saturday December 27. We will return to record on Saturday.

Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Shows: NYCTaper Preview – Oneida Opening First Night

December 19, 2008
By

As we announced/leaked all the way back in October two weeks before the official announcement, Yo La Tengo is set to perform their eight nights of Hanukkah at Maxwell’s with special unannounced opening bands and comedy.

We will be present on Tuesday December 23 and Saturday December 27. Our recording of the December 6 show last year was not only our 2007 Concert of the Year (see 2008 list here), but also one of the most requested recordings at this site. We expect that the two shows from 2008 will be equally excellent.

A very short while ago, one of the opening bands leaked their participation. Oneida will open the show on December 21, which also happens to be the first night. We are scouring the rumor mills and some of our knowledgeable connections for more information on openers. Check back to this topic for more info!

Yo La Tengo is offering their limited edition t-shirts online this year. In previous years the shirts were only available at the shows.

Yo La Tengo Will Play 2008 Hanukkah Shows at Maxwell’s

October 4, 2008
By

We are very happy to report that Yo La Tengo will again perform a series of shows in celebration of Hanukkah at Maxwell’s this December. Our source informs us that the dates are preliminarily set for December 21 through December 28.  There will be an official announcement in the near future. Yo La Tengo is scheduled to leave for a few dates in Asia in less than two weeks, so expect official word before they leave.

Our faithful readers will recall that the one YLT Hanukkah show we attended last year was selected as our concert of the year for 2007.

Yo La Tengo – Two Upcoming Local Gigs

August 3, 2008
By

The New York Times scooped the blogs late last week when they reported that Yo La Tengo will perform the final “Pool Party” at the McCarren Pool on August 24. This gig appeared on the Yo La Tengo tour page yesterday.

Today a new gig appeared on the Maxwell’s page.  On Friday, September 5, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (2/3 of YLT) will perform at Maxwell’s.  While technically not a specific YLT gig, this event is a benefit for Terry Karydes who played bass long ago for YLT, but is better known for her work with The Schramms. The benefit also features Glenn Mercer of the Feelies, Dave Schramm and drummer Dave Metz (Human Switchboard, Schramms).

We are in the process of obtaining permission for nyctaper recordings of both of these gigs. Stay tuned.

Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan Performed Entire Library Set with Antietam Today

May 31, 2008
By

At Antietam’s Brooklyn Public Library performance this afternoon, Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo sat in for the entire set on keyboards.

Due to the torrential rain, the performance originally scheduled for the steps of the library was moved indoor to the auditorium. Unfortunately, we were unable to attend, but according to the Antietam MySpace blog, there is video of the performance. Joly?
