Yo La Tengo: December 22, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Its the season for giving, and virtually every year Yo La Tengo gives Hanukkah presents to its fans. The eight annual Maxwell’s shows are a time for surprise openers, special guests, rare songs, and unique covers. But this year is special for another reason entirely. Following a serious and recent health scare for Ira Kaplan, there was a potential that the shows would need to be cancelled. But Ira vowed to play all eight shows, and after a medical clearance the shows went on — albeit with Ira sitting in a chair on stage. We made it to Night 3, which featured Lee Ranaldo as special guest, both as the opener and as one of the guest musicians during the YLT set. As expected, the shredding and freakout guitar numbers for YLT were mostly absent, which highlighted the band’s more mellow and contemplative side. But when it came time for the show’s climax, the presence of Lee was fortuitous. A scalding version of Lee’s Sonic Youth song (from Goo) “Mote” featured the dual shredding of Kaplan and Ranaldo, and it flowed naturally into one of those extended versions of “Hatchet” that seem to have become an annual Hanukkah treat. We are streaming both songs below. When the twenty minutes of guitar bliss was over, it was obvious that although he suffered a health scare, Ira’s decision to press forward with these shows was the greatest gift of all.

I recorded this set from our standard location in this venue, at the front right corner of the soundboard booth, and mixed the hypercardioid microphones with an excellent board feed. The quality is superb. Enjoy!

I recorded Night 4, we will have a correspondent at Night 5, and I will be attending Night 7 (with hi and lo) and Night 8 (with acidjack), so there are more YLT Hanukkah shows to come.

Condo Fucks: November 4, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Condo Fucks exist as an alternative reality where Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew can perform as an authentic 60’s garage band playing a selection of eclectic covers without the need to actually be Yo La Tengo at any point during the evening. On Friday night at Mercury Lounge, the alter-ego of one of the favorite bands of this site delivered a blistering thirty-five minute set that left the packed crowd shaking their heads in awe. As we have witnessed so many times at Yo La Tengo shows, the band is comprised of three of the most knowledgeable music fans around — they are literally encyclopedias of 20th Century popular music. So it was no surprise that the Mercury setlist contained only two songs from the sole Condo Fucks release, 2009’s Fuckbook. Instead, the band played eleven other covers, ranging from 50’s R&B, to 60’s iconoclasts The Fugs, to obscure early 70’s proto-punk (electric eels, Richard Hell), to 80’s alternative (Television Personalities), all performed in a high-speed, feedback-drenched, vocally-distorted garage sound. When the set ended far too soon with the Flamin’ Groovies “Dog Meat” (streaming below), a song originally actually recorded on a two-track cassette deck in an actual garage, we took solace in the fact that for their Hanukkah shows in a few weeks, Yo La Tengo will undoubtedly dig out some of these songs to spice up the eight shows’ setlists. I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard booth and combined with a perfectly mixed board feed. Per the band’s instructions, the vocals were mixed at maximum levels to capture that authentic overdriven 60’s garage sound, and the venue’s team captured that sound perfectly. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: March 23, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The show was announced on Monday, tickets went on sale on Tuesday, and on Wednesday night Yo La Tengo was back at Maxwell’s — three months removed from their amazing Hannukah run. And this night definitely felt like Hannukah redux, with brutal weather and special guests in the building. Jesse Jarnow, who is writing a comprehensive biography of Yo La Tengo, wrote an excellent piece about this concert in the Village Voice. Here is his rundown of the appearance of one of those special guests:

[David] Byrne, last seen with the Tengos at Maxwell’s during Hanukkah 2002, came up at the end of the first set to add harmony to “Tears Are In Your Eyes.” The once head-Head introduced a new song, an addendum to his disco-pop opera Here Lies Love. Speaking of “the People Power Revolution” in the Philippines and declaring he intended to write an anthem, Byrne looked and sounded–in his overalls–as if he’d stepped straight from some neo-futurist pro-union propaganda wallpaper as he recalled, for a moment, the Velvet (Czechslovakian), Orange (Ukranian), and Jasmine (Tunisian) Revolutions. The song itself was more typically Byrne, a ballad in Caetano Veloso mode, lush chords and a melody cleverly knotted to accommodate tons of words — and, one night only, Georgia Hubley adding an empathetic sweetness to the chorus. But the winner of Byrne’s mini-set was a mournful, Tengoized “Thank You For Sending Me An Angel,” Georgia translating the song’s galloping tom fills into lonesome mallet thumps.

Perhaps energized by the excitement of the Byrne appearance, YLT came out smoking for the second set and treated the crowd to a phenomenal 15-minute “Pass The Hatchet” among other treats. The appearance late in the second set by The Feelies’ Glenn Mercer rounded out of the evening in perfect fashion, and the rousing closing Velvet Underground cover is provided as a stream below.

I recorded this set from our standard location in this venue. On this night, YLT was without Mark their longtime soundman. Carson, the house engineer at Maxwell’s filled in quite admirably and the sound quality in the venue all night was superb. This high quality of this recording is a testament to Carson’s talents. Will Oldham is one of those musical old souls, whose sound is impeccably ageless. With songs that incorporate elements of Americana, folk, country, rock, punk, blues, and a tinge of gospel, he is the consummate American artist, carrying in his haunting voice the sound of six generations’ worth of hardscrabble and heartbreak. Oldham has recorded in recent years under the moniker Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with this particular roster of players dubbed Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang. Although they were opening for Yo La Tengo on the seventh night of their incredible Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s, Oldham and the band treated us to a full-length set that leaned heavily on Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang’s current release on Drag City, The Wonder Show of the World, but also showcased some rare and unusual numbers, including a cover of Willie Nelson’s “In God’s Eyes”, and the Hasidic spiritual “Dark’cho”. The players comprising the Cairo Gang gave each song the benefit of rich, full arrangements that highlighted Oldham’s unforgettable vocals. In particular, I was blown away by the soulful “Teach Me To Bear You” from The Wonder Show of the World, with an extended, more rocking closing than on the record. Having enjoyed Oldham’s records for years, it was truly a holiday gift to finally experience this incredible artist and songwriter’s live show.

Yo La Tengo: December 8, 2010 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads (two sources!) plus Streaming Songs

Following a killer opening set by The National, Yo La Tengo opened the final performance of their eight-night run of Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s with the somnolent “Night Falls On Hoboken”, but the pace picked up from there, with the Beatles cover “Eight Days A Week”. Still, compared to the Nels Cline-influenced night 7 and the super-noisy, ear-(and Ira’s head)-bleeding night 5, the band stayed on the mellower side for the bulk of the main set, including on a beautiful “Demons” and Georgia taking over vocal duties on the Norma Tanega cover, “Walking My Cat Named Dog”. Hamish Kilgour of The Clean joined for most of the main set, including on a cover Kilgour’s band’s “Whatever I Do It’s Right”, with Kilgour on vocals. That was followed by a noisy cover of The Mad Scene’s “Sweet Dreams” (a tribute to both Kilgour, who is also in that band, and Georgia, who a frequent part of their lineup). Appropriately, the main set ended with the core trio on two of their best-loved classics, “Blue Line Swinger”, and “Our Way To Fall”.

I had my doubts as to whether there was any way to create a coda to such an incredible eight nights that would make sense and do justice to all that came before it. But, it is foolish to doubt a veteran band in their element – Yo La Tengo did exactly what they needed to do, bringing it back home with frequent contributor Bruce Bennett on guitar for the Velvet Underground‘s “I Can’t Stand It Anymore,” followed by their guitar tech Gil Divine joining the band for Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together” and the grand finale, Mel Brooks’ “Love Power”.  To cap all of that off, Ira threw himself into the crowd and surfed the length of Maxwell’s as everyone howled with approval.  After eight nights of obscure, classic and famous special guests, outstanding comedy, and Yo La Tengo performances that would never be forgotten, there was nothing more to say, play or do.  Yo La Tengo relinquished the stage triumphant. And once again, night fell on Hoboken.

nyctaper recorded the set with the Neumann microphones and a soundboard feed, while I used a combination of DPA and Schoeps mics set up from the same position. We are offering both of these outstanding recordings for download here. As you would expect, the audience recording is warmer and provides more feel of the room, while the Neumann/soundboard recording provides exceptional clarity and detail.  Samples of both are included.  All tracks are tagged for easy importing into iTunes.  Enjoy!

Jeff Tweedy: December 3, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The last time Jeff Tweedy played in room this small in the NYC area was the better part of two decades ago. As the opener of Yo La Tengo’s third night of Hanukkah, Tweedy seemed to recognize the rarity of the occasion and even communicated a little bit of sentimentality for the old days. The ultra-rare performance of “Gun” (streaming below) brought a reference to Uncle Tupelo having played Maxwell’s in the early 90s. We would catch Jeff play a full show at Bowery Ballroom the night following this show, but for one brief thirty-five minute set, he was back in the past. And that’s a pretty good thing.

This set was recorded by local taping legend “Laz”, who mixed a pair of vintage Beyer cards with a board feed for a superb capture. Enjoy!

I hope I’m entitled to change my mind once in a while. I had previously declared the brilliant Night 5 of Yo La Tengo’s 2010 Hanukkah Maxwell’s shows as my favorite. That night was a stunning example of noisy YLT at its best. But after reviewing and editing the recording for Night 7, I think I’m changing my vote. Any show that features uber-guitarist Nels Cline is a sure winner, and this particular show was no exception. The band began quietly with a sweet version of “I Feel Like Going Home”, but shortly after, all hell broke loose. The twelve-minute electronic controlled mayhem of “All the Glitter Is Gone” gave Ira and Nels an early chance to blend their distinctive chops and it was pure noisy bliss. Later in the set, Georgia’s “Little Eyes” (streaming below) was a perfect spotlight for each member’s talents. The real meat of the set started with the fast “Big Day Coming” (fourth time of the week, but still not old) and ended with “Pass The Hatchet”, which was propelled for fourteen solid minutes by the hypnotic bass work of James with Ira and Nels again provided dueling axes. YLT kept up the energy with two Ramones covers, before Bonnie Prince Billy and his band joined for the finale.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones placed in their usual front corner of the booth mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The National: December 8, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The National last played NYC at Terminal 5 in July, a concert we covered for the site. Its hard to imagine that we would next see a band of that stature in Maxwell’s, but the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows bring surprises of all sizes. Although we were clued into this appearance earlier in the week (and the Village Voice spread our tweet), it was still pretty surreal to see the National take the stage in front of a hundred or so people. The band and their mini horn section managed to fit pretty comfortably on the stage, and they worked through a shortened version of the standard set. In a brief conversation I had with Bryce before the show, he remembered that the band had played Maxwell’s several times early in their history, and there were references during the show to those times. Despite how far they’ve come, The National still retain their perspective and the material was as authentic and powerful up close in the intimate venue as it was in the large ones they play now. The National will spend much of the first half of 2011 on tour in Europe, but we expect to see them again in NYC this Summer, although never again at a venue this compact.

We recorded this set with all six of our high-end microphones mixed in eight channels with a slight board mix. We used the Neumann’s for clarity, the DPAs for warmth and the Schoeps for the low end. The results are pretty outstanding. Enjoy!

Mission of Burma: December 5, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The other aspect of Hanukkah Night 5 that made it my personal favorite was the gift of Mission of Burma. We have seen them several times since their 2002 reunion (sadly never in the early 80s), but never like this. MOB was truly in the giving spirit on this Sunday night, as they delivered a truly unique set of music. The show opened with one of their oldest and most obscure songs “Nu Disco” — a number written in 1979 which is said to have spurred Roger Miller to add tape loops to the band. MOB then followed with six new songs, including one (“Hi-Fi”) we had heard before (in January at Bowery), and at least two debut performances. The second half of the set consisted of five diverse and eclectic covers, from Cream to Eno to the Wipers. The most striking cover was Clint Conley dead-on channeling Pete Shelley on the Buzzcocks’ “I Don’t Mind” (streaming below), but the band also played the heck out of a seven-minute version of the Wipers “Youth of America”.

Mission of Burma returns to the area in January when they’ll play two local gigs, Maxwell’s on January 28 and Bell House in Brooklyn on January 29.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Yo La Tengo set from this night, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows are an embarrassment of riches, as everyone knows. There are the extended set times; the cozy atmosphere of Hoboken’s inimitable Maxwell’s; the kinship among a group of the band’s most hardcore fans; the special guests; the comedians. But amidst all of that, what still drives the fanaticism around these show is, ultimately, a band that can shapeshift like few others. Especially at these shows, when you go to see Yo La Tengo, you never know what you’re going to get. On Wednesday the 1st, we saw the lighter side of the band, joking and playing Elvis covers; on Sunday the 5th, we saw the noisy, aggressive rock band that followed a set by Mission of Burma. On this night, we got the musically erudite record geeks, the band whose influences are far-ranging and frequently obscure, offering up a host of amazing covers. We got Bob Dylan’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” “Shut Up” by obscure 60s garage-rock band The Monks, The Beach Boys’ “Little Honda” (which they have, over time, effectively made their own), “This Ain’t the Summer of Love” by Blue Oyster Cult, a (this time) successful version of Paul Simon’s “Red Rubber Ball”, one of my personal favorite YLT covers, “You Can Have It All” and many more. And for guests, we were equally rewarded: Wilco’s Mikael Jorgenson joined for several numbers on keyboards, Antietam guitarist Tara Key on several others, and, for the encore, the legendary Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby, doing some of their own songs and more covers. The set closed with a stage full of the night’s musicians (plus comedian Eugene Mirman on theremin) covering The Fugs‘ nihilistic “Nothing.” It made for an ironic ending to a night that was all about affirmation and recognition: affirmation of the sheer joy and variety of music, and recognition of the rich diversity of artists that brought Yo La Tengo to this point.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones and a stereo soundboard feed by the Maxwell’s staff. As with the 12/5 show, unfortunately we were not able to mix in an additional source from nyctaper’s Neumann mics, which is too bad. Nonetheless, the results are outstanding, as all of these shows have been. Enjoy!
