The Mountain Goats show on Friday night was a fan’s dream but a taper’s nightmare. John Darnielle entertained the crowd with much banter, off-microphone songs, and accepted a series of obscure requests from the diehards. While the highlight of the show for many of those in attendance was the infrequently played “Ontario”, we were particularly moved by the story lead-in and the version of the beautiful “From TG&Y”, and John’s proclaimed first public piano performance (“1 John 4:16”) since childhood.

The Concert Hall at The Society for Ethical Culture is a beautiful and classic old theatre, but it sits in a residential neighborhood and the volume of the show is purposefully limited. Additionally, the high ceilings create reverberations that are particularly noticeable in an acoustic performance. The difficulties of the venue were magnified by a series of technical problems and John’s penchant to play several songs completely unamplified.

This was the maiden voyage of our new Edirol R-44, a high resolution four-track recorder (professionally upgraded for concert recording). We used our four best microphones in a configuration that decreased the echo in the venue. Due to the many issues in the capture of this show, the post-production for this recording was a major undertaking. We believe that we have maximized the sound quality of this difficult recording to create a fine listening experience for our readers. Enjoy!

The John Vanderslice [JV] recording was also recorded and will be posted in the next few days.

[many thanks to Thom for photo permission — more here]

If Saturday night’s Mountain Goats concert in Brooklyn was a serious exercise in musical precision, Sunday night’s tour-closing show at Webster Hall was a joyous celebration of a wonderful month of music and friendship. The show began much like Saturday, but it soon became apparent that this would be a special Mountain Goats night when John Darnielle revealed that his solo set would include only songs from 1997’s Full Force Galesburg — including “New Britain” which had only been performed once previously. Of the twenty-four songs in the nearly two-hour show, a full twelve were different from the previous night, and included such rare gems as “Going to Georgia”, “Minnesota”, and “Game Shows Touch Our Lives”. After two encore segments of six songs, at the close of the night, John spoke eloquently and genuinely when he thanked the audience for their support. We thank John, Kaki and the bands for two very special evenings of music.

This concert was recorded from the prime location in this venue, in the center of the floor, equidistant from the two large PA stacks. While the mix was perhaps a bit too bass heavy (we EQ’d slightly in post-production), this recording is another excellent capture of a superb band. Enjoy!

Sometimes its a charmed life to be nyctaper. Less than 24 hours after an amazing Deerhunter concert, we were back inside Music Hall of Williamsburg for a show we had been anticipating for months — The Mountain Goats return to NYC. When Brooklyn last saw John Darnielle, he performed an outstanding solo set at the Masonic Temple that included one brand new song. That song, “Wizard Buys a Hat” would later appear on the new Satanic Messiah EP, which along with the Kaki King-collaboration Black Pear Tree comprise the two new EPs released this Fall.

Last night’s set included five of the six songs from Black Pear Tree, but unfortunately none of the four Satanic Messiah tracks. Nevertheless, the setlist was democratically distributed among The Mountain Goats catalog and was performed with precision and much energy. John was perhaps less manic and chatty than previous appearances, but that focus served us well — the hundred-minute set was packed with twenty songs and four encores. When we attend the Webster Hall show tonight, a different setlist is expected which will complete a thoroughly enjoyable two-night Mountain Goats experience.

We recorded from the identical prime location from previous events at this venue, and the sound quality is truly superb. You have not heard, nor may you ever again hear another unofficial live recording of The Mountain Goats of this quality. We are proud to present this exceptional capture of this particular artist. Enjoy!

Mountain Goats Release New EP via Honor Method

October 10, 2008
By

messiah-cover

The Mountain Goats have released their new EP Satanic Messiah. The 4-track EP is available in lossless formats (AIFF and FLAC) through bit torrent download. The flac files we downloaded are 55.6 MB size. The total download time for the flac folder was less than five minutes. We will remain on this torrent as an upload seed for as long as there are still people downloading.

There are also available direct downloads in compressed AAC and mp3 formats (total size 26 MB).

There are Paypal and Google checkout options for “donations” when you download this EP. Based upon our belief in the importance of the implementation of this distribution method, the quality of this music, and the quality of this artist, we donated $10 — the “acolyte” level. We strongly encourage our readers to “donate” and support this artist and this release method.

nyctaper Interview: John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats

September 11, 2008
By

John Darnielle discusses the new Mountain Goats EP Satanic Messiah, live versus studio recordings, flac, DIY releases, and alternative forms of music distribution.

When nyctaper recorded the Mountain Goats in Brooklyn in May, it was a solo John Darnielle concert that featured a large assortment of older and rarer numbers, and one absolutely new debut performance. When a conscientious fan in the Mountain Goats forum suggested that John might not appreciate nyctaper circulating the new song “Wizard Buys a Hat”, John disagreed. In the nyctaper interview with John Darnielle posted in its entirety below, we now understand John’s position.

As the Mountain Goats prepare to offer Satanic Messiah, an EP to be released in a pay-as-you-please method through alternative distribution channels, John discusses the freedom to do “DIY” a release, along with the accompanying uncertainty.

nyctaper: I see that “Wizard Buys a Hat” is to be one of the songs on the new EP, is this the same arrangement as the version at Masonic Temple?

John Darnielle: No, not at all, the recorded version of “Wizard Buys A Hat” is actually very quiet – it kinda starts quiet and then gets super-quiet. It has a sort of Dario Argento build-up-scene feel. Guitar, vocals, a drum, some organ. To me it rules over the “I am nervous so I guess I’ll yell real loud version” but that’s just me. I go through a lot of internal drama about playing new songs live, because people like it when I stomp and yell, but I have no interest in making stomp and yell records, all those bands who try to sound like “yes we are in reckless abandon!” on their records sound silly to me. You know? Ben Harper when we were kids told me he thought a song should always be better live than on record, that live performance is about breaking the recording open, and while I’m not sure I agree 100% – I think I prefer recordings to live music – I do think that recorded music is a collaboration between the listener and the performer, and trying to treat it like it’s an attempt to recreate/emulate a live performance is a mistake. I think of recordings like little Easter-scene sugar eggs: look inside of them, squint, see all the little things hidden in there. A live show is more about everybody just gorging themselves on raw sugar. Both are nice, but they shouldn’t try to be like each other.

nyct: I think its great that you will be using new means of distribution of the EP (direct download, torrent, etc). Will the EP be offered in flac?

JD: Yeah I think so. The original idea was to offer MP3, AAC, AIFF & WAV. In any case, both major compressed formats and at least one big-size format. Still working that stuff out. It is exciting, putting this thing together, I have to say – getting all the stuff organized, thinking about how to do it, thinking about formats, arguing with people who don’t know how to use torrents about whether we oughta host the actual files instead of just seeding a torrent and pointing at it – when you really do absolutely everything yourself, which is what I’m doing with this record, you learn that a lot of the propaganda about being in control really is true. There’s beauty and power in making all your own decisions. At the same time, you know, writing checks to a lot of places and thinking “jeez I hope people actually pay for the songs or I’m gonna be eating ramen for a while,” that feels a little funny. Fingers crossed!

nyct: I’m not sure how one measures “success” on a project like this, but if all goes well, can we anticipate that this new method of EP distribution will be used again by tMG?

JD: I hate talking about money, though this is the second time in two paragraphs I’ve done so, but: the bottom line here is whether people who download the songs decide to pay for them. People talk about “exposure” as an intangible sort of reward, but exposure doesn’t count as payment as far as I’m concerned – most people with jobs will agree, if I tell you that I’m telling other people you’re awesome instead of paying you, you got a raw deal. So, this is an experiment – I already know how much I’d get paid if I did a regular pressing of the EP, I have a good sense of how many I’d sell and what the profit to me would be. I have to admit I’m a tiny bit skeptical about how it’ll go, though I’d love to be proven wrong – people always point to the big-marquee boys (Radiohead, NiN) as if small fish can hope to compare, but those are bands with massive fanbases built on the old model with lots of cash going into the process. If a tenth of the people who download In Rainbows pay, then Radiohead eats good for a year. Not so easy when your craft is tailored to a much smaller audience! If a tenth of the people who I expect will download this EP pay me, then I’ll lose a fair amount of money. So, who knows? Some days I think “hell yes, bold new world, looking forward to being able to release more music more often and put out all the EPs and weird projects I can think of, really be sharing all my ideas with everybody in nearly real-time, that’s gonna be rad.” And then other days I just wanna go back to making tapes. It’s not like I left my label or anything – I just wanted to see how something like this would work for me, and I did it with new studio recordings instead of half-assing it: went the full route from production through mastering and now I’m excited to see how things work out. And really, I’m happy no matter what happens, because think the EP’s good work from me – at the end of the day, all this stuff I’m talking about is just idle chatter: all that matters is the work, and that gives me satisfaction, and if people enjoy it, then that’s doubly satisfying. So, while this very long paragraph probably looks like I’m super-concerned with all this stuff, I’m not – it’s just, like, you asked, and as a working artist trying to make a living, this is the kinda stuff I think about a lot. You know?

Mountain Goats May 16, 2008 Brooklyn Masonic Temple – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The Mountain Goats stepped back in time last night at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn. In 90s fashion, John Darnielle performed solo as bassist Peter Hughes and drummer Jon Wurster did not make the trip to NYC for this Aids Walk Benefit. John performed no songs from the Mountain Goats 2008 release Heretic Pride, dipping into the older catalog for such early chestnuts as “Young Caesar 2000”, “Going to Scotland” “The Last Day of Jimi Hendrix’s Life” and “Baboon”. The result was an extraordinary and unique Mountain Goats concert for the year 2008.

We recorded from literally 10 feet in front of the right PA stacks with the hyper-directional DPA microphones. The recording is very clear and contains almost no crowd noise during songs. The only “flaws” are the two songs where John sang in the front of the crowd and away from the vocal microphone and we were able to capture very little vocal audio. Other than those two numbers, this is a recording of outstanding clarity and balance. Enjoy!

BASIC: September 14, 2024 Seuffert Bandshell

September 30, 2024
By

Long before This is BASIC—the new album from Chris Forsyth, Nick Millevoi, and Mikel Patrick Avery—Forsyth and Millevoi had both separately been discussing the uniqueness of Robert Quine’s discography and playing. Forsyth gave an interview in Raven Sings the Blues back in 2019 where he praises the overlooked, even disliked, album from Quine and drummer Fred Maher, Basic. In 2021, Millevoi breaks down Quine’s “unpredictable” playing for Premier Guitar, complete with music notation. As an observer and non-player, it’s fascinating to hear musicians talk about their influences in ways so clearly project their excitement and awe. It’s worth mentioning also that Quine was a taper, having captured some of the key surviving Velvet Underground performances, including three renditions of “Sister Ray”!

The current lineup of BASIC has Doug McCombs, who should need no introduction, sitting in with Forsyth and Avery. Catching up with them here in Forest Hills park, BASIC are anything but. Mikel Patrick Avery’s percussion, a mix of triggered sounds and analog drumming, is mesmerizing as it reverberates throughout the bandshell and park. McCombs plays a six-string bass which opens up its own unique possibilities as a foil for Forsyth’s guitar. They play the album through in order but with the new lineup it’s morphed into something unique. I expect as this trio continues playing together, they’ll further adapt into new forms.

BASIC is about to kick off their West Coast tour and then return to Brooklyn in December with 75 Dollar Bill at The Sultan Room or at Tubby’s in Kingston with Chris Brokaw. If you’re local, don’t miss those. If not, check out the BASIC tour dates and catch them near you:

David Nance Group: June 8, 2019 Union Pool

With no slight intended to Nebraskans, David Nance arrived seemingly out of nowhere last year with Peaced and Slightly Pulverized. But in reality he’s been highly prolific, furiously releasing original material alongside wonderfully-dazed full album covers of classics like Berlin, Goat’s Head Soup, and the gloriously-descriptive Doug Sahm and Band Do 90% of the Cocaine in the World in 1972 and Make a Record. Nance doesn’t seem overly precious about handling his or others’ music—preferring the energy of basement recordings to studio perfection—but clearly he has great reverence for it. His guitar playing and finely wrought lyrics are often disguised by an effortlessness that makes them all the more charming. That is, your typical David Nance song is baked, but not half-baked. For the recently released “Meanwhile” b/w “Credit Line” 7″ on Third Man Records, the two short cuts come off as ragged, bottled lightning, gone before you know it. But that’s Nance’s aesthetic, his nonchalance masking a gift for finding the sublime in the awful and mundane (see “Credit Line” or “In Her Kingdom”).

I missed Nance and band at Union Pool last year when they toured for the album and vowed not to do it again when they came around a couple weeks back. This set rests heavily on new material, with only “Poison” representing Peaced and Slightly Pulverized, plus “Meanwhile” and “Credit Line” from his recent single rounding out the released songs. Sometimes you just want to hear the songs you know, but I was mildly prepared for the new stuff from listening to this live compilation from his Bandcamp page. “Cure Vs. Disease” and “Give It Some Time” are earworms for sure, with Nance’s irresistible vocals providing the hard sell. The only question is when’s the next one coming and where do I send my money?

I recorded this from our usual setup at Union Pool, room mics combined with a board feed from FOH Robert. It retains all the grit you’d want from this band, and sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Träden (Träd, Gräs och Stenar): September 28, 2018 Music Hall of Williamsburg

The concentration of great psych bands coming out of Sweden these days is astounding: Dungen, Goat, Hills, Centralstödet, The Janitors. That’s just to name a few that are on my radar and I’m sure I’ve barely scratched the surface. But the most well-known psych band to come from Sweden  is almost certainly Träd, Gräs och Stenar (Trees, Grass and Stones) and they undoubtedly loom large for the younger generation.

Today they’re called Träden, but shifting band names and performers has always been part of the deal for the group that started off in 1967 as Pärson Sound, which became International Harvester, then just Harvester, before settling on Träd, Gräs och Stenar in about 1969. Despite their reputation as DIY hippies—or perhaps because they were just that—a wonderful amount of documentation survives, with recent archival releases highlighting how incredibly vital and popular their music still is today. Though Pärson Sound never released a proper album, a three-LP set documents their early experimentation. International Harvester/Harvester released two records, Sov gott Rose-Marie and Hemåt, both recently collected as part of the Remains box set. And more than six LP’s worth of live Träd, Gräs och Stenar material was collected in a box set from Anthology Recordings a few years ago (their studio albums from the 1970s remain sadly out-of-print).

Träden is just the latest iteration of this band, using both names interchangeably on tour (their first to hit the U.S. since 2004). The sole original member of the band is Jakob Sjöholm, who joined in 1970 (in time to play on the second studio album, Rock för Kropp och Själ). He’s joined by musicians from some of those great bands I mentioned above: Hanna Östergren (Hills) on drums, Sigge Krantz (Archimedes Badkar) on bass, and Reine Fiske (Dungen, The Amazing) on guitar and vocals. Their live repertoire includes songs from their new self-titled album, as well as older Träd, Gräs och Stenar songs like “Rock for kropp oct själ” and the well-known “Sanningens silverflod.” “När Lingonen Mognar” appears on Träden’s album, but was also originally released on Harvester’s Hemåt. Whether you call them Träden or Träd, Gräs och Stenar, the music itself is timeless.
