Northside Festival — Lineup + NYCTaper Coverage + Badge Contest

May 29, 2010
By

The second annual Northside Festival returns from June 24 – June 27 at various venues in Brooklyn. The list of bands includes twenty-two artists who have previously been featured on NYCTaper, and this year we will be very busy covering many of the Fest’s featured shows. While the official complete schedule has not been released, there are quite a number of excellent showcases that have been announced. In particular, the Woodist Records showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg is scheduled for Friday June 25, and the Brooklynvegan showcase is at the same venue on Saturday June 26. We expect to cover both of these. In addition, shows by Titus Andronicus, Fiery Furnaces, Dinosaur Feathers, Liars, F*cked Up, Les Savy Fav and Polvo are all must-see’s.

Northside Festival is also running an excellent contest in which they will give away eight badges and other assorted goodies, the first prize of which includes a VIP pass and an iPad. All the details of the contest are here.

We will post our complete show schedule for the Northside Festival when all the showcases are officially announced. Until then, expect more updates here and at the Northside site and Northside twitter.

NYCTaper Upcoming Events – Fall into Winter (Including CMJ!)

October 3, 2009
By

This is a great time for nyctaper.com. We have had a very successful run of recording outings in the last month. Readership has doubled since this time last year. The addition of acidjack as a regular contributor has been a godsend. The site is now producing recordings at a much higher rate and with consistently higher quality. In fact, this week we did a first for NYCTaper — two shows recorded the same night and posted within hours!

The Fall and Winter continue along the same path — many excellent shows and many opportunities to bring outstanding music to our readers. CMJ is especially packed this year and we expect to record many shows during that week. We hope these salad days continue unabated!

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember I’m doing this all for free — the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc. — so treat me fairly.

Unicycle Loves You: Venus Zine Band of the Month + Playing CMJ

September 30, 2009
By

Unicycle Loves You is an eclectic psychedelic pop band from Chicago. Their self-titled debut on Highwheel Records gained the band quite a bit of buzz and resulted in gigs opening for the likes of Fiery Furnaces, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Awesome Color. This week Unicycle Loves You was awarded Venus Zine’s Band of The Month with a neat cover story and band bio.

We are extremely happy to have Unicycle Loves You as the opening band for the NYCTaper 2009 CMJ Day Party at Bruar Falls on Thursday Oct 22. They will start the show with a set at 12:30pm. Get out early and don’t miss this outstanding band.

NYCTaper Interview: Jason Loewenstein + Circle of Buzzards Preview

February 23, 2009
By

We have seen Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico perform together many times in the last several years. As the tremendous driving and aggressive rhythm section behind the live Fiery Furnaces, Jason and Bob created the foundation for some of the best live music ever featured on this site. It was then with great delight that we saw the two had formed a new band Circle of Buzzards in the temporary lull in the Furnaces schedule.

Circle of Buzzards will perform for only the fourth time in their brief existence on Thursday February 26 at Glasslands. Sample recordings are available on Jason’s site and on their MySpace page.

We spoke via email with Jason about Circle of Buzzards, the Glasslands gig, and also received some Sebadoh news.

NYCTaper: Hi Jason, thanks for agreeing to speak to nyctaper.
We are pretty stoked about Circle Of Buzzards, having seen you and Bob play together a bunch of times. Is this a project that you two have been discussing for a while, or did it just grow out of the down time in the Fiery Furnaces schedule?

Jason Loewenstein: Circle of Buzzards was born because The Empire State Troopers asked us to go out on the road with them. I wanted to go out on the road with them, but I needed a band and some songs. So I made them up and we loaded up the van.

NYCT: Do you envision this as a long-term project?

JL: I hope so, I think this is a really good band.

NYCT: Do you expect that it will remain a bass/drums duo?

JL: Yes. The elements of rhythm, melody and amplitude are fully represented thru the wanton precision of a highly developed physical representation of our mental state(s) and their connection to the present moment awareness of our 6 senses and the physical aggregates of our audience. We are of and in the present moment and seek to bring all others there with us since they are already there.

NYCT: So what can we expect at the Glasslands gig. I see that there are four songs on your page, are there other Buzzards songs, or might we hear some At Sixes And Sevens material or some covers?

JL: We have a bunch of songs. None of which will come from my solo record. We will probably play for about a 1/2 hour… There will likely be one cover song, but I dont think that anyone will know it. I will probably just pretend that its our song / not mention it.

NYCT: As nyctaper, I find it really refreshing that you have such an open policy towards tapers, as have all your bands. Can you talk a little about your open approach to tapers and the reasons why?

JL: Nothing good can come being a shit-hoarder. Musicians are lucky that anyone would give a shit to make tapes of them!

NYCT: Finally, I guess any Sebadoh fan would find me remiss if I didn’t ask about the current state of that band. Is there anything in the works, recording, tours, etc?

JL: I will be playing with Lou later this year to support a solo record that he just finished…Sebadoh is still very much alive… Just busy with other things at the moment… Lou is gonna tour with Dinosaur, I will be playing with Circle of Buzzards and Fiery Furnaces in addition to making recordings for other bands… When the pace lets up a bit, we can be Sebadoh again!

MGMT Announce Halloween Concerts in NYC

September 15, 2008
By

It does not seem too long ago when we recorded MGMT opening for Fiery Furnaces at Music Hall in Williamsburg last December. But in the interim, MGMT has hit big in 2008 — with appearances at Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, and gigs opening for the likes of Radiohead and Beck. The MGMT concert at McCarren Pool in July was a complete packed house.

This morning, MGMT announced two Halloween shows, October 30 at Webster Hall and October 31 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. These shows do not yet appear on the Webster Hall website or Bowery Presents website.

MGMT bulletin: “Both shows are on-sale this Friday and the pre-sale begins this Wednesday at 10:00 am ending at 10:00 pm the same day.”

There is a presale password which I will email to anyone who requests it.

Some Neat nyctaper Kudos

August 20, 2008
By

We’ve been waiting for this one to arrive in the mail (hint!), but in the meantime, yesterday’s release of the Fiery Furnaces new live album Remember saw the addition of the album’s credits to allmusic. And wouldn’t you know it, there is nyctaper listed by name quite charitably as an “Engineer”.

We also received a major compliment from one of our favorite blogs today. EarFarm posted “A to Z: EAR FARM’s Favorite Music Sites“, and nyctaper is listed as the N entry with a very nice write-up. Thanks EF!
