The Backyard Brunch Sessions were moved indoors for the weather last weekend, but the developing themes for the series remained. This past Saturday again featured two bands that had never played a live acoustic session before, and also featured immense talent that was breathtaking to behold up close. The Courtesy Tier is a duo whose standard live show features Omer Leibovitz’s intense bluesy guitar and the aggressive drum work of Layton Weedeman. Saturday’s acoustic set was worlds apart — as Omer played a nylon string classical style guitar and Layton beat a bongo and mini-maraca — but the duo’s talents made it seem as if it was their normal set-up. At just three songs, the show was more a teaser, but certainly bodes well for the flexibility and dynamics of this up and coming and growing band. The Courtesy Tier play this weekend (Saturday July 17) at Rockwood Music Hall, and then next Saturday (July 24) return to Spike Hill.

We recorded this set with four microphones placed strategically around the duo and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Nicole Atkins: June 19, 2010 Backyard Brunch – Flac and MP3 Downloads (Streaming Sample)

Talent is an amazing thing to behold up close. When it comes to professional athletes, when you see them in person their amazing physicality is intimidating. Television does not do them justice. Its the same with musical performers. On Saturday, we were invited to capture a private performance at a “backyard brunch” series being presented weekly this summer. Nicole Atkins is a performer of some renowned, as Neptune City her 2007 release on Columbia Records reached number 20 in the Billboard “heatseeker” chart. But from five feet away in a relaxed backyard setting, Nicole’s talent is breathtaking. The Backyard Brunch series is unamplified, and yet even without the benefit of a sound system, her sweet yet powerful voice carried through all the ambient noise of a Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg to thoroughly entertain the intimate crowd. Nicole set included two songs from Neptune City and several songs that we anticipate will appear on her forthcoming album. Nicole Atkins performs again in NYC at the City Winery on August 7, when she returns from an extensive European tour.

I recorded this set with four microphones placed within a few feet of the artist. Other than a few moments of wind and some outside noise, this is quite an exceptional capture. Enjoy!

It took an impromptu interview with two of us and the band Courtesy Tier for me to realize that we had been following them for six years. Having first impressed at a Backyard Brunch Session, then at our CMJ show, we were struck early on by the easy interplay between Layton Weedeman and Omer Leibovitz who, being a duo who play blues-driven rock n’ roll, earn easy comparisons to The Black Keys. But at the 2015 Rough Trade show we wrote about recently, the band had expanded to a three piece, and with Alex Picca on bass, the three became more than the sum of their parts. The band is promoting their Little Rock EP, in anticipation of a full-length album they are hard at work on, and we were thrilled to have them join us to preview some of that material such as their new single, “When You Were Young.”

While they may share a gulf in years with Wussy, for whom they opened this Trans-Pecos show, Courtesy Tier share many good qualities with their stagemates that night: an unpretentious, quality-based approach to music; an ability to write distinct, memorable songs around a cohesive sound; and a general ability to grab control of a room. I’d hazard that much of the audience at this show was new to Courtesy Tier, so we knew we’d made the right pick for an opener as we watched the crowd grow throughout their set, rather than the all-too-common flight for the bar. But then, you’d have had to be crazy to bolt during any of these songs, from the propulsive kickoff track and longtime band favorite “Cold” to the lighters-in-the-air closeout singalong, “Home.”

As with the Wussy set, I recorded this with Schoeps MK4Vs at the stage lip, Neumann KM150s on the room, and a soundboard feed from David Fine. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

List of All Available NYCTaper Recordings – 2010 Posts

December 19, 2015
By

taper-larger-e1414026230872

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back five years at 2010. The following years (’11 and ’12) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

The Loom: November 1, 2015 Union Pool

It’s never an easy feat, as a band, to shift stylistically without losing your soul. There are examples, of course — Radiohead’s hard-left from mainstream Britpop to IDM weirdos stands out as a major one — but it’s a huge challenge to court a new fan base while keeping the one you have. NYCTaper and The Loom go back to 2008, when it’d be fair to say they were a mellow-hued folk band. When I caught them in a backyard in 2010, it seemed well within reason that they’d be playing acoustic, with a homemade washtub bass and Lis Rubard’s horns wafting over John Fanning and Sarah Renfro’s dual vocals. In 2012, at Glasslands, it was clear that things were changing — their tastes in who they shared the stage with, for one — but you’d still have recognized that band you heard about from 2008.

Fast forward to Union Pool at the end of 2015, with a new bassist and drummer and two albums’ worth of material awaiting release.  This band opened for Moon Duo recently, and you can see the shift in emphasis in everything from Fanning’s cranked vocal reverb to the darker, psychedelic guitar tone. The two new players, John Mosloskie on bass and Mike Rasimas on drums, change that dynamic as well, providing a more emphatic and punchy backbeat to go with the overall heavier sound. Rubard’s horns haven’t been jettisoned, thankfully, but in the new context they add a ghostly mourn under the swirl of guitars, bass, drums and Rubard’s keyboards, rather than taking center stage. This set showed off amped-up versions of new songs we’d heard before (“Fire Makes,” “Like Lamp Glow,” “The Reading Room”) as well as brand-new compositions such as “I Am Not Young,” perhaps the definitive statement on the band’s new direction. Even on the Sunday after Halloween, or as one might call it, “the worst possible night for a show ever other than Christmas Eve,” The Loom proved their mettle by drawing a crowd of the faithful who seemed fully committed to the new direction. If anyone was put off by the unabashed rocking-ness of “Your Wilderness Years,” for example, they didn’t show it — and I might’ve seen a few air guitars going in that audience, too. At this point, this is a veteran band, and it’s a reward to see them stretch their wings, especially after a period of introspection by Fanning as lead songwriter. The result, along with a more muscular sound, has been two fully recorded and produced albums that are awaiting a label home. Even if you were aware of the band, this is The Loom you haven’t heard before — and it’s time to get reacquainted.

I recorded this set with an excellent soundboard feed by Kyle Lawrence, coupled with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Hum Residency: April 13, 2015 Manhattan Inn – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If you caught last week’s post about week one of the Hum Residency, you already know the deal — Hypnocraft Presents brings us a monthlong, Monday night series held at the Manhattan Inn in Greenpoint, featuring musical collaborations among a diverse range of predominantly women artists, together with live projections. By design, the events have a spontaneous, free-flowing feel to them, with the artists wedged in around the centerpiece of the restaurant’s back room, a large white piano, used intermittently by the bands. Surrounding the artist on all sides are the fans, unsure of exactly what to expect, but knowing it should be something interesting and important.

The second week’s lineup was especially diverse, featuring songwriter Deli & Ashley Jackson on harp, the violist and singer Hannah Epperson, folk pop from Elizabeth & the Catapult, and an abstract guitar performance from Indigo Street of Shy Hunters and Shelley Burgon on harp, all of it backed by lush projections by Sofy Yuditskaya.

Ashley Jackson began with two solo harp pieces, the second a fascinating version of Angelica Negron’s “Technicolor” with loops added in. Jackson was then joined by singer-songwriter Deli Neblett. Deli, of Nashville, began her very first New York show (!) with a set of guitar songs that felt even more delicate when backed by Jackson’s harp, as Neblett’s voice looped in the background to provide a ghostly ambiance to her arrangements. Her songs have a stylistic daring to them that sets her apart from her peers; the phrasing in “Boating” is hers and hers alone. “Grown Again” may remind you a little of Grouper, but it has a more organic sensibility than her work, despite the loops. Neblett’s future NYC shows should be worth a look.

Stream Deli & Ashley Jackson

[Hannah Epperson]

Violinist and vocalist Hannah Epperson felt in command of the situation from the get-go, promising to tame her usual volubility. I’d have been happy to hear her talk more, personally, but her playing belonged as the highlight. Of her two songs, the expressive “Farthest Distance Apart” really nailed it for me, with Epperson’s vocals about the transient nature of attention in modern society sure to hit home with most of us.

Stream Hannah Epperson:

Then came time for Elizabeth & the Catapult (in this case, the “Catapult” was guitarist/vocalist Chris Cubeta), who let loose with a rollicking, devil-may care kind of a set that found Elizabeth moving between the piano and wandering the stage with her guitar, joining her musical partner for vocals on “Go Away My Lover”, which we first experienced at Elizabeth’s Backyard Brunch Session a couple years ago. Here, Elizabeth sounded more forceful and assured than ever, earning plaudits as well as some deserved laughs for both her all-too-recognizable lyrics about relationships and her equally-deserved hate for hashtagging. Elizabeth & the Catapult’s set was so on point, in fact, that she even got an “encore” of sorts, turning her song “More Than Enough” into a crowd singalong.

Stream Elizabeth & the Catapult:

Perhaps the evening’s most surprising set came from Indigo Street and Shelley Burgon, who closed things down with an intense set of ambient instrumental music that created the perfect vibe for ending the night. Their choices — Burgon’s “Time Between Times Variation Three” and the theme from “To Kill A Mockingbird” — were cerebral, cinematic numbers that were a joy to see being created. They truly created the sort of “hum” this event is about, a warming of the heart, brain and soul, an oasis of reflection capable of taking place even in a crowded bar. It was something special.

Stream Indigo Street and Shelley Burgon:

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed together with Audio Technica 4051 cardiod microphones up close on the performers. While some ambient noise can be heard from the crowded bar up front, as well as bits of DI hum here and there, overall the sound quality of the sets is quite good. Enjoy!

It says quite a bit that out of the many sets by well-known “jam band” luminaries and others at this tenth annual Mountain Jam, one of my very favorite was by my hometown band (and decidedly non-“jam”) band Lucius, who we first got acquainted with playing as a duo in a humble backyard, before the crowds and the record and the festival circuit. The ladies who played Backyard Brunch Sessions that day weren’t anything close to a well-known act at that point — they had one EP to their name — but what they already had was what would carry them to where they are today: talent, great songs and humility. Back then, we hoped for, but never could have predicted, the way this band has blown up, to the point that on this past weekend alone, they were scheduled for both Mountain Jam and the much larger Governor’s Ball back in the city.

Compared with my last outing with the band at Webster Hall (and another set I didn’t record at SXSW) this Mountain Jam set was revelatory. Simply put, this always-promising band has upped their game to where it needs to be to play these kinds of stages. Vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe have mastered their sound, their harmonies carrying well across Hunter Mountain’s wide-open space, and the band, consisting of percussionists/instrumentalists Andrew Burri, Peter Lalish, and Dan Molad is similarly able to play big, loud, and dialed-in. Lucius manage the difficult feat of sounding modern without coming across corny or derivative, while offering some of the same arena-filling fire that great female-fronted 80s groups like Heart used to be able to without sounding retro. They even served up a few bars of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” during “Turn It Around” (streaming below) just to put an exclamation point on that notion. Fittingly, I’m streaming “Nothing Ordinary” from this set below, because there is nothing ordinary about Lucius. This was by far the best set of theirs that I’ve seen, and they’re just getting started. Please support them — they’re on the festival and otherwise U.S., UK and Europe tour circuit until the fall, and their album Wildewoman is out there for purchase.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones from an optimal spot at the festival, and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Look for more Mountain Jam recordings in the coming days.
