Eli Winter: September 14, 2019 Trans-Pecos

If you follow this site, you know that we are fans of “American primitive guitar” and have documented much of its greatest musicians in live performance. As examples, Daniel Bachman, Glenn Jones, Richard Bishop, Chuck Johnson, Bill Orcutt, Ben Chasny, and William Tyler have all graced these pages, often multiple times. If there’s a “wunderkind” of APG its our featured performer for today, Eli Winter. A native of Houston who went to college in Chicago, Winter has been around the scene since he was in his teens. The first time I heard a live recording several years back, it seemed pretty obvious to me that Eli Winter was a unique talent and a person with skills far beyond his modest years.

In 2019, the music world seems to have taken notice. Winter released his first full length record The Time To Come, and was selected by Ryley Walker to appear on a the Walker-curated release on Tomkins Square Records called Imaginational Anthem. In the Fall, Winter self-booked an fairly extensive tour of the Northeast and we were fortunate to be able to present him as direct support for the Walker/Grubbs duo show at Trans-Pecos in mid-September. Winter’s set was exactly what we had hoped to see — a showcase for a generational talent who could literally become the face of American primitive guitar in the decades to come. We fully expect to be attending Eli Winter shows for years to come, in progressively larger venues. But for now, this Trans-Pecos gig will suffice.

This set was recorded straight from the soundboard to a thumb drive. Due to the quiet nature of the show, the volume was quite low and elevating levels did produce some minor hiss. Otherwise, this is a quite listenable recording. Enjoy!

Wilco: October 13, 2019 Brooklyn Steel

I first saw Wilco 23 years ago, and first taped them live 22 years ago. Wilco was one of the first bands to be featured on NYCTaper in 2007 and have been consistently featured on this site over the years. By my count, we’ve featured Wilco 26 times on this site, from many local venues but also as far away at Virginia, Massachusetts, Cooperstown, and Connecticut. The simple reason for this consistent and voluminous documentation is that Wilco is perhaps the greatest American band of the last 25 years and their live performances are unfailingly superb. We’ve never had a bad time at a Wilco show, and very clearly have had some of our best live experiences thanks to them.

The release of any new Wilco album is a cause for excitement, but by all accounts (including ours) the latest release Ode To Joy is their strongest and most accomplished album in more than a decade. In times when the world is reeling out of control on a nearly daily basis, Wilco’s newest album is a thoughtful and measured approach to contemporary life. Given that Jeff Tweedy recently completed his autobiography and released two solo albums, this kind of contemplative Wilco release seems to have been the next step in this artist’s evolution.

After a newly two-year hiatus from touring, the entire Wilco band seems very much to have absorbed the energy at the center of the recent artistic output of its leader. The Wilco we saw on Sunday night, and by all accounts on every night of this tour, is a relaxed and confident band comfortable with themselves and each other. The result is that these shows have been not only celebrations of the return of the band to touring, but also kinetic performances of the new material mixed in with virtuoso versions of the classics. Of note at Brooklyn Steel was the absolutely stunning guitar solo by Nels Cline in “Impossible Germany”. Just check out the audience response at the close of the song and the extended ovation. What a moment. We were also quite pleased to see another spacey “Laminated Cat” and first album stand-out “Box Full of Letters”. But on this night, the showcase was on Ode To Joy and the setlist wisely spaced the songs throughout the set where we heard nine of the album’s eleven songs nearly in order of the album.

The Wilco tour continues with dates throughout the country for most of the rest of the year (dates here), culminating in the Wilco Sky Blue Sky Festival in Mexico in January.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hyper cards raised high directly centered behind the soundboard. The Stan Doty mix in this already-excellent sounding room was simply perfect and as a result we’re offering what I currently believe to be the best sounding Wilco recording I’ve ever captured. Kimya Dawson: September 18, 2019 Market Hotel

Its hard for me to believe its been almost twelve years since we last saw Kimya Dawson live. Those two shows in 2008 at tiny Southpaw, and then later at a much larger Webster Hall straddled the time period when Kimya’s star rose dramatically due to her exposure in the Academy Award nominated film Juno, which included her performance at the Oscars.

We noted back then that fame hadn’t at all changed the authenticity of this unique performer and that remains correct today. She remains a person whose observational songwriting skills convey an understanding of the variety of emotions of the human condition — humor, love, anger, sadness, and most importantly a sense of community. This concert at Market Hotel covered much of her classic material and consequently many of those emotions.

This set was recorded by house FOH Joe onto a thumb drive through the soundboard’s internal recording device. Except for a low guitar level in the first song, the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker, Steve Gunn & Ryan Jewell Trio: March 5, 2019 Union Pool

Ryley Walker led off his March 2019 Union Pool residency with a shot of his usual self-deprecating humor, telling us he just got dumped and that this was his first show as a New Yorker (he’s lived here for months and performed quite a few sets here since). For those of us who’ve followed his career for the past five-plus years, we knew at least one thing to expect next: Ryley’s music is as serious as his stage persona is flippant.

Still, that couldn’t quite prepare us for the trio set with Steve Gunn and Ryan Jewell that followed. This trio could have done any number of things well, but what we ended up with reminded me tonally of Gunn’s collaborations with the drummer John Truscinski — with a hundred percent more guitar. Over the course of this 50 minute improvisational piece (titled by yours truly given the lack of a given one), I was struck by how, in the right hands, an instrument can be a person’s voice. Take Walker at his word — or put yourselves in the shoes of almost anyone who first moves to NYC from their hometown — and you knew what kind of energy he was working with: frenetic, exuberant and relentless. He played like a person aching to be seen, announcing themselves in an unfamiliar place. It wasn’t his first show as a New Yorker, but it might be the first one with that alchemical mix of awe, anxiety and urgency that turns you into the kind of person who belongs here.

Gunn’s trademark guitar tone undergirds the entire piece, a beacon for what’s to come. There’s a sweetness and calm to even Gunn’s noisiest work that’s of a piece to his own stage persona: confident but laid-back about it, extraordinary without overreaching. Like his recent guest appearance with William Tyler, this collaboration with Walker made for an incredible combination of peer guitarists operating at their creative and artistic peaks (not to say they won’t enjoy more). Likewise the conservatory-trained Jewell, an almost-constant among Ryley’s touring bandmates, who comes in and out of the foreground of this extended improv at the right moments, adding drone-style percussion at critical ebbs in the volume.

From his noise roots to his folk-leaning earlier albums to his wholly-new current material, Walker proves over and over that he refuses not to stretch himself artistically. It was hard to take photos of this show. You could get a clear shot of Steve, eyeing Ryley from stage left. But Ryley Walker, he was a blur, especially at this piece’s final, ecstatic climax. Like a true New Yorker, he never stops moving.

I recorded this set with a flawless feed from Union Pool’s engineer Doug Graham, together with Schoeps MK5 microphones at the soundboard. The quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: September 19, 2018 White Eagle Hall

Making the best of a bad turn after the cancellation of their tour supporting Mastodon, Dinosaur Jr. took to some roads less traveled, hitting up smaller venues in far-flung cities like Maquoketa, IA and Fort Wayne, IN. Their NYC-area appearances brought them to the small Garcia’s room at the Captiol Theatre in Port Chester and the larger White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. We caught up with them for the latter and were rewarded with more than an hour and a half of shredding from Mascis, Barlow, and Murph. After opening up with “Thumb” from Green Mind, the band launch into four tracks from their latest album Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not (which is an awfully good record for a band going long past thirty years now) followed by a set of Dino-favorites like “Feel the Pain,” “Little Fury Things,” “The Wagon” (with Don Fleming and John Moloney), “Freak Scene,” and so on. For the encore the band is once again joined by John Brannon and Easy Action for some Negative Approach songs, plus the Dinosaur Jr. noisefest “Don’t” and Stooges closer “T.V. Eye.”

Grateful Shred: July 13, 2018 Brooklyn Bowl

True confession: I’ve never seen one of the various latter-day projects of any of the former members of the Grateful Dead. (I know, I know. I’m working my way up to it.) But I’ve also never seen a Dead cover band—that is until Friday night. California’s Grateful Shred made their East Coast debut last week with a show at Garcia’s at the Cap (appropriate) and two nights at Brooklyn Bowl. It occurs to me that fidelity to the spirit of the Dead exists not on the stage, but in the crowd, the lot, the makeshift Shakedown Streets that pop up surrounding these events. I’m not qualified to judge whether the Shred performed these songs perfectly, hit the notes right, whether they were too faithful to the material or not faithful enough (Deadheads have lots of opinions, man). But what I can speak to is the vibe they created: good times were had with plenty of dancing and new friends. On night two, a guy named Rudy approached me, noticing the mic stand and thanked me for taping. He gave me one of a bunch of homemade Grateful Shred shirts he had made to commemorate the shows. We talked about how the Shred do a great rendition of “The Music Never Stopped.” There’s pretty much nothing I could imagine that would be more in the spirit of the Dead. Go forth, enjoy the Shred—we’ll be back in a little bit with night two.

Pylon Reenactment Society: July 1, 2018 Mercury Lounge

Pylon’s influence on their contemporaries is indisputable. Indeed, over the years REM has consistently cited Pylon for their positive impact on the 1980s Athens scene. What’s become more clear in the intervening years is that Pylon’s influence is more vast than their local time and place — their revolutionary sound can be heard in new bands even today. Pylon was enjoying a bit of a renaissance in their third reunion period of 2007-2008 when tragically guitarist Randy Bewley suffered a heart attack and passed away at the age of 53. At that point, the band was formally retired and it seemed as if Pylon’s music would only live on in recordings.

After a few one-off local performances, in 2014 lead singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay re-formed the band under the moniker Pylon Reenactment Society. With the blessing of her two former bandmates Michael Lachowski and Curtis Crowe, Vanessa compiled a group of performers from the Athens scene who were both intimately familiar with the music and personally known to the band. Guitarist Jason NeSmith and bassist Kay Stanton were not only members of Athens mainstays Casper & the Cookies, but were also bandmates with Vanessa in Supercluster. Drummer Joe Rowe was a founding member of Athens greats the Glands, who suffered their own deep loss with the 2016 death of leader Ross Shapiro. Vanessa also added a new touch with this new configuration, as her friend and University of Georgia music professor Damon Denton fortifies the sound of PRS with skillful keyboards. So with friendship, familiarity, and a common ethos, its easily understandable that Pylon Reenactment Society has generated universally positive reviews as both an tribute and a celebration of Pylon, and a contemporary band with its own story to write.

Pylon Reenactment Society doesn’t come North very often, but we were fortunate to catch this month’s appearance at Mercury Lounge, a venue where I captured the original band in 2007. With a full crowd there to party, PRS brought the goods — an animated set of old Pylon classics and two new numbers all performed with the precision the songs require but this a new touch from a different skilled set of performers, all fronted by the inimitable Vanessa Briscoe Hay. The set began with “Driving School” and “Volume” from the first Pylon record, 1980’s Gyrate. Indeed, the show would include almost all of the first album and the entirety of Side A of the band’s second album Chomp. The set even included uber-rare b-side “Altitude”, a song with which we were unfamiliar until the fantastic release in 2016 of Pylon Live (Chunklet). With a twenty-song, ninety-minute set, Pylon Reenactment Society gave the crowd of old and newer fans all that could have been asked for — a chance to relive the old classic material in a new configuration with plenty of heart. We hope they’ll be back North again soon.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards set up next to the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Jeff Tweedy: January 30, 2018 Vicar Street Dublin Ireland

Jeff Tweedy is in the midst of a short solo tour that finds him roving through Canada and which ends with a show at Princeton University.. Jeff will return to the NYC area in June for two dates as part of the Clearwater Festival up in Croton. But earlier this year, Tweedy traveled through Europe including a special night at Vicar Street in Dublin as the opening night of the tour. Friend of the site Joe was there to capture the Dublin show, a night filled with many classic favorites and much banter and fan interaction, but which is most noteworthy as the live premiere of the new Jeff Tweedy composition “Don’t Forget We All Think About Dying”. The song has been played a handful of time since Dublin, including once on the current tour, but Joe’s recording is the song’s world premiere.

Joe recorded this set with portable microphones from the front and center of the balcony. The quiet acoustic music and the generous crowd participation created some serious editing issues, but overall this is a quality listen. Enjoy!

What’s better than an early Sunday evening kickin’ it with the deep space musings of Matt “MV” Valentine? How about Matt plus PG Six, aka Pat Gubler, who’ve been touring (and are about to put out a record) together as Wet Tuna? The pair of guitarists (plus some pre-recorded beats) were in NYC for a pair of shows, the first night (recorded) at Brooklyn’s Ceremony, the second this jaunt at the revitalized Trans-Pecos.

Given that the night kicked off with a DJ set from WFMU’s DJ Jeff Conklin, whose beloved Avant Ghetto show is a must-listen for fans of this kind of music, it felt appropriate for the Tuna to launch with “I Know You Rider,” the traditional blues song popularized by the Grateful Dead. From there, we got two more sick covers – Michael Hurley’s “Water Train” followed by Incredible String Band’s “Empty Pocket Blues,” which flowed into the Livin’ the Die track “New York Street.” Along with this performance with the Tuna, we’ve also caught Matt on some recent solo outings — so stay tuned for that as well.

This set was recorded directly from the Trans-Pecos soundboard. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
