Pylon November 7, 2007 – Mercury Lounge – Lossless Download

I had the same reaction when I saw Pylon in 1988. How can a band who has not toured in many years, and who have played intermittently since the 1980s, so sound tight. Its a credit to the rhythm section of Curtis on drums and Michael on bass, but its also a testament to the quality of the original songwriting and the unique melodic sense of guitarist Randy. Last night at the Mercury Lounge, Pylon delivered a terrific set of their best material in front of a packed and adoring crowd. Vanessa was energetic and genuinely modest about the tremendous crowd support.

With the permission of Pylon (thanks!), I recorded this concert from the ideal location in this venue, equidistant from the two sets of speakers, and directly in front of the soundboard booth. The result is a recording with excellent stereo separation and clarity. The crowd is present in the recording, but not obtrusively. Enjoy!

Fiery Furnaces November 3, 2007 – Hiro Ballroom – Lossless Download

The Fiery Furnaces continue to invent new ways to entertain their fans. At the Hiro Ballroom last night, the final show on the US leg of their Widow City tour, the Furnaces added a written/call-out request segment to their show. Following a tight 45-minute set which began and ended with the new material, and contained a nice medley of Rehearsing My Choir material in the middle, Eleanor read from some notes passed up on stage (as their website suggested) and fielded shouted requests. The last 20 minutes of the performance featured some oldies, some false-starts, and much humor. The band continues their tour with a trip to Europe that begins on Tuesday, and goes throughout to the end of November.

My recording of this concert was a bit of an ordeal. I arrived very early, with plans to record one of the opening acts on the bill, Pit Er Pat. However, after nearly completing the set-up of the Neumann rig, I discovered that my fully-charged lithium battery (that powers the entire rig), had completely died. I broke down the rig, left the venue, and took the L train all the way home again. I retrieved my DPA rig, returned to the venue, and arrived in time to record the Furnaces.

The Hiro Ballroom is a neat little venue with an excellent sound system. I positioned myself in the back section of the floor, in the center of the stacks, and recorded a fine stereo mix. Enjoy!

Regina Spektor October 16, 2007 Hammerstein – Lossless Download

Regina Spektor came home to a huge admiring crowd at the sold-out Hammerstein Ballroom on Tuesday. Regina has come a long way from her Lower East Side anti-folk days and such venues as the Sidewalk Cafe, Fez and Tonic, but she has truly retained her modesty, charm and deadly sense of humor. All were on display at Hammerstein, as she worked through a delightful and varied setlist.

This recording was made from the best location for sound in this cavernous venue. However, recording a solo piano artist can be difficult, particularly when the crowd is so supportive. While Regina sings the recording is outstanding, but the volume levels boom when the crowd cheers. Be prepared for those boosts, and enjoy an otherwise thoroughly engaging performance!

Sigur Ros – October 6, 2007 Gould Hall – Lossless Download

October 7, 2007
By

Sigur Ros are set to release Heima, the documentary about their 2006 tour through all of Iceland. Advanced screenings have been available in half-dozen cities worldwide, and last night New York was treated to 2 screenings, a 7pm and a Midnight show. I was fortunate to get a ticket to the late show, which was announced just a few days ago. The bonus for all the screenings has been a brief 3-song live acoustic set by Sigur Ros.

The documentary contains a stunning visual portrayal of Iceland–a unique magical land–with a soundtrack of powerful live performances by Sigur Ros. The majority of the film follows Sigur Ros through the unpopulated upper regions of Iceland, where they perform in locales such as an open field, a town square, and an abandoned fish factory. The band discusses their experiences with detail, humor, and true appreciation for their homeland. This film is due to be released on DVD in November and is undoubtedly a must buy for even the most casual fan of Sigur Ros or Iceland in general. Watch the trailer here.

I recorded the 3-song acoustic set, and offer it for download below. Unfortunately, I did a below average job of capturing this performance. I did not re-set my levels from the Fiery Furnaces concert I had recorded hours ago (from 10 feet in front of the PA), and as a result the master recording has extremely low levels. When I raised levels significantly in post-production, obvious hiss was present. Caveat listener.

Mekons – October 3, 2007 Blender Theatre – Lossless Download

October 5, 2007
By

The Mekons 30th Anniversary tour rolled into New York on Wednesday with a rousing and lengthy concert by the British legends. While the set did feature several numbers from their new album Natural, the set also was fine retrospective of their material. The set was punctuated with the standard Mekons oeuvre — extensive stage banter, some alcohol, and much humor.

The Mekons permit fan recording. As a result I was able to position myself in the identical location as the Bjorkestra / Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey recordings from last week, and use my best equipment. The results are outstanding, and a fine representation of this entertaining and enjoyable performance.

The photograph posted above is courtesy of twi-ny. There are more excellent high-resolution photos from this concert here. Thanks also to Club Mekon for advice and assistance. Visit Club Mekon here.

Bjorkestra at Bowery Ballroom
January 20, 2006

Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra headlined the Blender Theatre last Saturday with a ninety minute set of jazz excellence. In anticipation of the release of their first CD (to be entitled Enjoy and due for release in January), Bjorkestra went on a brief tour in the Northeast. The Blender show featured the addition of a track from Bjork’s Volta album in the setlist.

The sound quality in the venue was outstanding, and my equipment and positioning were ideal. This recording accurately reflects the excellent venue sound, but perhaps the horn section was mixed too low. Thanks again to Travis for permission to record.

This is the third time I have recorded Bjorkestra. Excellent recordings of the February (here) and the June (here) performances are still available for download in the archives of nyctaper.

White Stripes July 24, 2007 NYC – lossless download

July 25, 2007
By

Well, its two weeks later, and instead of seeing White Stripes with 1200 people on a remote island in Canada, its back to the big city, the world’s most famous arena, and 20,000 fans. Again, Jack and Meg were consistently excellent. The performance lasted 30 minutes longer than the July 11 concert, and the band did not seem to be fazed at all by the size of the venue or the raucous crowd.

The NYC recording differs from the Canada recording, but the quality is equally excellent. I was in my favorite recording section of the Garden, Section 7, which placed me in front of the soundboard and in the center. This recording has more stereo presence, but also more of the crowd. It is perhaps a better overall representation of the experience of this outstanding concert.

This recording is no longer available due to Mr. White’s new strict anti-taping and anti-sharing policy.

White Stripes July 11, 2007 Prince Edward Island – Lossless Download

July 15, 2007
By

NYCTaper became PEITaper for a night when my annual vacation trip to Prince Edward Island crisscrossed with the White Stripes tour across Canada. Charlottetown is a beautiful old city on the water, and its quaint Civic Centre provided a uniquely intimate setting to experience Jack and Meg on tour. The White Stripes large stage set-up and the layout of the small hockey arena only allowed for about 1200 people in the facility.

I was seated in the first row of the stands, 3 seats from the front, directly in line and only 20 feet from the left PA speaker stack. As a result, the recording is quite clear and upfront. Additionally, the hockey boards provided a buffer from much of the noise of the crowd from the floor.

As you’ll hear in the recording offered for download below, the White Stripes used the intimate setting to perform a nice varied setlist and a high energy show–such that Charlottetown may be the best show of the entire Canadian tour.

This recording is no longer available due to Mr. White’s new strict anti-taping and anti-sharing policy.

Fiery Furnaces – June 30, 2007 – Lossless Download

July 1, 2007
By

I was introduced to the music of the Fiery Furnaces through a live cover of their song “Tropical Ice-land” by Of Montreal. Kevin Barnes called their Blueberry Boat the album he “goes to sleep with at night”.

When one door closes, sometimes another better door opens. When Morrissey postponed his show (see below), I was fortunate that a concert of this quality was also scheduled in the NYC area. After securing a ticket through craigslist, it was off to Jersey.

Its hard to describe the music of Fiery Furnaces without engaging in weird musical juxtapositions. They perform oddly accessible alt-pop, with a dry sense of humor, and strange twists of melody. My best absurd description would be the 1975-era Patti Smith fronting a band with members of Captain Beefheart.

The Maxwell’s performance captured below was superb in all respects. The sound quality, the performance, and the energy of the crowd and the band were all outstanding.

Wilco at Hammerstein June 25, 2007 – Lossless Download

June 26, 2007
By

What else can be said about the band that has produced the most consistently great music over the last 10 years of contemporary music. The new album has been called a “return” to a more traditional Wilco sound, but that’s not really accurate. Sky Blue Sky is yet another step in the maturation process of the band, and more particularly in Jeff Tweedy’s life and career. Its also the first album with Nels Cline as a full-time member, and as a result, the guitar work is rich and imaginative–particularly in “Impossible Germany”.

I’ve seen Wilco regularly since 1996, on about a dozen occasions, in every local venue from Mercury Lounge to Madison Square Garden, including recording one of the most famous of the early Wilco shows, February 15, 1997 at Irving Plaza. Wilco have never failed to deliver a top notch performance in my experiences, and Monday night at Hammerstein was no exception.

I recorded with band permission from a microphone stand in front of the soundboard booth. Although Hammerstein is a cavernous venue with much echo and boominess, the outstanding job by Wilco’s sound crew provided a PA signal with such remarkable clarity that I was able to capture a superb recording.
