Rock Cliche Overload – Band of Thieves and Your Vegas at Bowery Ballroom August 22, 2008

August 22, 2008
By

We hate tired and old rock cliches — the kind of stage antics that you have seen hundreds of times before and which indicate a stunning lack of originality. Band of Thieves and Your Vegas are ruthless purveyors of this kind of cliche on stage and in their pedestrian songs. Unfortunately, the two bands were on a bill back to back on Friday night at Bowery Ballroom and the result was an unbearable exercise in bad taste.

Band of Thieves were inexplicably described by the Village Voice as “classic rock n roll”, which would be true in its most cynical and derivative form. This is a band whose “best” song “Woman” contains such scintillating lyrics as “you’ve been running ’round uptown”. The stage act is about what you would expect, lots of prancing, strutting and chest-thumping. What followed however, was markedly worse.

We have seen hundreds of bands in the last couple of years, and Your Vegas isn’t just the worst band we’ve seen in that time, they are the worst by a wide margin. Your Vegas does deserve some kind of perverse award for employing a strikingly large and perhaps a record number of rock cliches all within their first two minutes of their first song. In terms of sound, Your Vegas used every fiber of their being to mimic U2, but unfortunately it all comes out sounding like Cutting Crew. As we maintained an involuntary painful grimace listening to this set, it because necessary to flee the venue for relief.

The sad part of this evening for us was that we did not even make it to the band who we came to see. Jupiter One play an energetic and inventive post-80s pop and this concert was a release party for their self-titled debut album. We’ll catch them again on a better bill.

Wilco August 13, 2008 McCarren Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Wilco has spoiled its fans for years — long energetic shows, consistently excellent albums, interesting collaborations — they are the finest working American band. Wednesday night at McCarren Pool, the Brooklyn fans were treated to a special evening of perhaps the most complete Wilco performance NYC has ever seen. After 27 songs, eleven encores, and two-and-a-half hours of music that covered all aspects of their career, there could be no gripe from any of the 5000 guests save for the most petulant, fickle or inexperienced concert-goers.

The setlist was a complete review of Wilco’s music — of the first 12 numbers there was at least one song from 7 different albums. All the classics were performed, along with a nice selection of rare old chestnuts (“Far Far Away”, “Kingpin”) and some obscure tracks (“Blood of the Lamb”, “Pieholden Suite”). The band also added a trio of horns (“Total Pro Horns”) for this tour who added an interesting dimension to several older numbers. Jeff Tweedy’s voice has fully recovered since his surgery two years ago, and it seems to be completely back to its original strength. Jeff threw quite a few playful verbal ribs at the crowd, although he refrained from throwing actual food into the audience.

We recorded from directly in front of the soundboard in the center. While the packed crowd was a bit too chatty around us, the music was expertly mixed by Wilco’s talented sound crew and they provided us with a superb sound capture. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten August 3, 2008 Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads

At Cake Shop on Sunday night, Sharon Van Etten opened her headlining set to an enthusiastic crowd with a new song we believe is called “Whoa!”, and contains the refrain “oh, slow down”. Sharon could well be singing about how fast so many aspects of her career are moving. The very next day after Cake Shop, Sharon began another tour, this time with Festival, Bowerbirds and others, that runs through the end of August and covers the South and Midwest. The exciting date on the tour is Sharon’s appearance at the 47th Annual legendary Philadelphia Folk Festival on August 16. She has also booked an appearance at an official CMJ showcase in October, with more details to follow.

We recorded Sharon’s final NYC appearance of the summer from the upfront location at Cake Shop that we have used in the past. Unfortunately, the air conditioning at Cake Shop was broken, and the room was ventilated with two rather loud electric rotating fans. The recording has a consistent hum of the fans in the background. Otherwise, its an intimate recording of a outstanding performer. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo – Two Upcoming Local Gigs

August 3, 2008
By

The New York Times scooped the blogs late last week when they reported that Yo La Tengo will perform the final “Pool Party” at the McCarren Pool on August 24. This gig appeared on the Yo La Tengo tour page yesterday.

Today a new gig appeared on the Maxwell’s page.  On Friday, September 5, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (2/3 of YLT) will perform at Maxwell’s.  While technically not a specific YLT gig, this event is a benefit for Terry Karydes who played bass long ago for YLT, but is better known for her work with The Schramms. The benefit also features Glenn Mercer of the Feelies, Dave Schramm and drummer Dave Metz (Human Switchboard, Schramms).

We are in the process of obtaining permission for nyctaper recordings of both of these gigs. Stay tuned.

If there’s anything predictable about The Fiery Furnaces, its their unpredictability. The touring band continues to morph and the arrangements of the songs continue to evolve. We knew this would be another interesting Furnaces show when the nearly eight-minute opening “Navy Nurse” began with two minutes of Eleanor’s new improv lyrics, followed by a brief Mozart interlude from Annabelle, before proceeding to the song proper.

Annabelle’s multitude of melodic percussion added a nice touch to the band’s sound, perhaps a bit more appropriate than the strong presence of Kyle Hollingsworth’s brief time with the Furnaces. The other band changes were the return of Michael Goodman on percussion and Jason Loewentein‘s absence (he’s literally on summer vacation). Additionally, Matt played guitar on about half the songs — the first time he’s played guitar live in several years.

The renovated East River Park Bandshell had a great atmosphere, with an LES vibe mixed with the river surroundings. The acoustics of the shell were quite good and the amphitheatre seating offered a fine view for all in attendance. We recorded from the front rail next to the soundboard and captured an excellent recording, compromised only by the hum of the generator during quiet moments. Enjoy!

Pela June 21, 2008 After The Jump Fest – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Pela‘s set at After the Jump Fest in June was inspirational for all the right reasons — perseverance, tenacity and positive energy — in a year when the band was in the news for all the wrong reasons. In March, vocalist/guitarist Billy McCarthy had a terrible accident at a show in Chicago that left him without use of his left hand and which required surgery. The medical bills were so overwhelming that a fund was set up to help out Billy.

On the main street stage in Williamsburg redemption was at hand. Pela performed the longest set of the Festival based primarily on songs from their excellent 2007 release Anytown Graffiti. After a rousing “Cavalry”, the standard set closer and the song during which he was injured in Chicago, Billy thanked the fans for their generous support and well-wishes. It was a moment of poignant sincerity that spoke well for the grassroots appeal of this superb band.

We recorded from in front of the soundboard booth at the outdoor stage. The location and sound were quite good, except for some wind noise, crowd noise and the humming sound of a generator behind the stage. Overall this is an excellent capture under the circumstances, and we’re happy with the results. Enjoy!

High Places July 2, 2008 Stuyvesant Town – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 7, 2008
By

Last Wednesday, High Places performed outside of their standard Brooklyn DIY and club scene. The Oval at Stuyvesant Town has had weekly Wednesday concerts for quite some time, but for years the bands have been local acts and cover bands. As the community has gone through some substantial upgrades, the Summer music series booked its first legitimate act.

The video embedded above appeared on youtube yesterday, and has created a bit of stir in the blogs. While the video seems to indicate that High Places only performed to a group of toddlers, the shot is quite misleading. This footage was taken during the day when High Places did their soundcheck to the afternoon crowd at the Oval — primarily children and older people. When the actual performance took place, the grass area in front of the stage was filled with people of all ages who included many fans of the band, local residents and curious onlookers — all very supportive of the interesting and excellent music on stage.

High Places is a taper friendly band, as our friend baltimore-taper recorded them last year. We recorded this set with a direct line from the soundboard. The signal is fairly clear, but there is a noticeable hum/buzz from the board that also was apparent in the PA stacks. During louder moments the well mixed board is outstanding, while during the quieter points the hum can be distracting. With that caveat enjoy this excellent band!

Brilliant Sweaters June 21, 2008 After The Jump Fest – Flac and MP3 Downloads

I would like to write about the live experience of Brilliant Sweaters, but to be honest with all the stages and multiple recording locations at the After the Jump Fest, I actually didn’t witness any of this 23 minute set. However, one of the nice parts of going back to review 12 hours of live material is the discovery of some pretty excellent music — and the Brilliant Sweaters were one of the sets that jumped out at me. They write catchy power-pop tunes and have a wicked sense of humor. We will certainly (actually) see them live this summer! Brilliant Sweaters perform at SEALAB744 tomorrow night (June 27) and also have a midnight gig at Cake Shop on August 15 that we will likely attend.

This recording is a superb capture, as the soundboard feed and Neumann microphone mix was balanced perfectly. The only flaw from this set seems to be a loose guitar cable that created some intermittent pops in the feed. Enjoy!

Dirty on Purpose June 6, 2008 Rooftop Concert – Flac and MP3 Downloads

June 8, 2008

When we approached New Design High at 350 Grand Street at dusk on Friday night, the line for the Rooftop Concert Series season premiere spread across Grand, up Delancey and over and around onto Broome. After the six-flight walk-up, the large crowd was treated to a short but powerful set of music by Brooklyn’s Dirty on Purpose. As the sun set and with a spectacular view of downtown Manhattan available from all angles, the melodic guitar-oriented music opened the season with such appropriate songs including “Girls & Sunshine” and “Summer Dress”.

There were several impediments to optimal recording for this event, but none significantly detract from the enjoyment of this excellent capture. There was a generator on the rooftop (either power or air conditioning) which hums along in between songs and some barely audible wind bursts. The mobile sound system was quite basic, and was somewhat saturated in the first song. We were fortunate to set up 15 feet from the stage and as a result the impediments are fairly minor. Overall, as a result this is probably a better listen than our Mercury recording of Dirty on Purpose. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten June 6, 2008 Pianos – Flac and MP3 Downloads

June 7, 2008
By

The true measure of the quality of a singer-songwriter is the ability of the performer to get inside the song — those moments when the singer and song become one. Last night at Pianos, Sharon Van Etten realized a series of those poignant moments in a stunning fifty-minute performance of her intimate and powerful songs. That a modest and unassuming young woman can suddenly transform from awkward banter to confident and meaningful songstress at the moment she steps up to the microphone is a true indication of the talent of this artist. In the third number “Much More Than That”, a song of Sharon’s we had not heard before, she stepped back slightly from the microphone and projected in her sweet voice the crescendo of a simple yet transcendent song about the power of human touch — all the while truly touching each listener.

Sharon thanked the audience and noted the fleeting nature of such powerful evenings. The irony is that Sharon unwittingly has predicted her own future. There will not be many more opportunities to experience this performer with 50 people in a club the size of Pianos, as larger venues and audiences soon await this uniquely talented artist. Her debut CD will be released this summer, and she will tour the east coast in July. Prior to her tour, there are a few more chances to experience what the Pianos crowd was fortunate to hear last night.

Sharon’s other upcoming NYC dates include:
June 10 2008 8:00 Union Hall Brooklyn
June 14 2008 8:00 Union Pool Brooklyn
June 21 2008 8:00 Rooftop Films Concert Series Brooklyn
June 25 2008 9:00 Zebulon Brooklyn

Check Sharon’s MySpace page for more details.

We again recorded from the prime location directly in front of the soundboard at Pianos. However, given the quiet nature of this performance and the excessive Friday night noise from the front room of the venue, there are quite a number of moments when the extraneous noise leaks into the recording. Overall though we are pleased with this capture. Enjoy!
