Monks of Doom: March 12, 2009 Club Europa – Flac and MP3 Downloads

On Thursday at Europa, Monks of Doom hit the ground running and never let up. In their first live performance in nearly four years, the band top-loaded the setlist with heavier rock numbers played flawlessly. With much humorous banter in between numbers, Monks of Doom then alternated original numbers and their eclectic covers, and finished the impressive set with an intense back-to-back “Insect God” and “Hurricane Fighter Plane”. Thursday’s solid show set the stage for Friday’s epic performance.

We recorded this set with the Neumann microphones inside the soundboard booth on the far right, closest to the stage. This position placed us directly in line with the main PA speakers, approximately 30 feet from the stage. While this recording certainly does not have the amazing mix if the multitrack from Friday, this capture is still quite excellent. Enjoy!

If you choose to donate as a result of this recording, do not donate to nyctaper (paypal on the right), but please paypal to the band at the Email Monks of Doom.

Lucero: February 6, 2009 Terminal 5 – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

Since Johnny’s Black Keys recording received universal rave reviews from nyctaper listeners, we had high expectations for the opening sets of this show — those expectations have been met!

Review by Johnny:
I can honestly say that I hadn’t heard a note from this band until they stepped on the stage at Terminal 5. Led by Ben Nichols, Memphis-based Lucero seem to be cut from a different part of the same whiskey-soaked cloth as Drive-By Truckers and the Replacements that Bruce Springsteen had used to wipe his brow. They present a rollicking good time that would make seeing them in some boozy little southern fried bar a mind-blowing event. Not to say their set at Terminal 5 wasn’t awesome, but equipment problems plagued guitarist Brian Venable for the first part of the performance, eliciting a few snickers from the crowd whereas in a smaller venue the throng would’ve been passing shots up to the stage in an effort to relieve the group’s frustration. Kudos to them for keeping their sense of humor through the ordeal and putting on a great show. The beautiful interplay of the pedal steel and the keyboards didn’t hurt either. The only way to say it is that these guys ripped. If this is what they are like on an “off” night, I can only imagine the experience when they’re “on”. As I stated earlier, I hadn’t heard of Lucero prior to this show. But rest assured, at least one of their albums will join me at the register next time I’m in a record store and I’m damn well going to see them the next time they’re playing a gig in town.

Our recording position in the venue was the same as for the Black Keys and Heartless Bastards. Aside from the chatter during the low-volume parts and the guitarist’s equipment troubles, the mix was about as good as it gets in this venue and the resultant recording sounds really good. Enjoy!

These Are Powers: January 23, 2009 Bell House – Flac and MP3 Downloads

[photo courtesy of Edan at thepiratehat]

The first time that I saw These Are Powers live was about a year ago, early in the morning in a smokey venue with a cranky old sound system. I absolutely hated them. It never occurred to me that I might just be wrong about them, and that maybe the only thing that was really cranky and old that night was me. Several months later, I read a series of glowing reviews of These Are Powers performance at Siren Festival and had some reservations. Perhaps I should give them a “second chance”.

Friday night at Bell House, the performance by These Are Powers was truly a revelation. We were not distracted by negative conditions and simply concentrated on the band. We got it. These Are Powers create a textured beat and layer it with bass, keyboard effects and processed vocals. The influences are as diverse as German techno, Remain in Light and late-era Butthole Surfers. The band also seems to have a wicked sense of humor, which juxtaposes nicely with the sometime dark elements of the music.

The set included material from the upcoming release from These Are Powers entitled All Aboard Future. The release party for this new CD will take place on February 13, 2009 at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn. These Are Powers will also perform this Friday January 30 at the DanBro space in Brooklyn in a ToddP event that features NYC bands and Baltimore bands in a “competition”.

We recorded this set from the same location as the Ponytail recording and the sound is excellent.

Bearsuit to Perform at SXSW (March 13-22) – Need Sponsors

January 9, 2009
By

[Bearsuit at NYCTaper CMJ Showphoto by subinev]

By all accounts, British alterna-pop wizards Bearsuit killed at CMJ. On their triumphant return to the U.S. after an immigration issue in 2007, Bearsuit played NYC in early October, and then toured the east and midwest before they returned for a week of outstanding CMJ shows. Now they want to return to the U.S.!

Today Bearsuit posted a request for their MySpace friends seeking sponsorship for an appearance at SXSW 2009:

Dear bear buddies,
We are looking for a kind hearted soul or lucrative business person to sponsor us to go to SXSW in March this year.
We are prepared to wear any clothes, drink any caffiene, fizz or alcohol based beverages, eat any fast foods, and generally endorse any product you may have.
We are welcome to offers. We will not do: drugs mule, sex trafficking, personal humiliation…
x

Help them out, will ya? Perhaps they will even return to NYC if we do!

In other Bearsuit news, they performed live on the BBC earlier this week. Listen [here].

Pylon: December 15, 2008 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads

A year ago we were both excited and impressed by Pylon’s performance at Mercury Lounge. Last night, the Athens legends returned to NYC and performed a looser but equally impressive set. Pylon have performed only a few times this year, but retain their signature sound, quirky energy, and most importantly a unique sense of rhythm. The Knitting Factory offered the band a more intimate setting, and with the crowd consisting of mostly WNYU deejays young and old — a crowd of knowledgeable and attentive fans — Pylon thrived on the vibe.

We recorded from the center riser of the balcony, and as the house board was mixed by Pylon’s veteran local sound tech, the mix in the room was superb. We are very pleased with the sound quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten – NYCTaper Interview and CMJ Preview

October 19, 2008
By

Sharon van Etten / Secret Garden from hoovesontheturf on Vimeo.

We were first introduced to the music of Sharon Van Etten interestingly enough through an email from The Antlers that announced some recording details of their soon-to-be-released CD. Sharon provides vocals for a couple of tracks. While we had heard of her, we had not yet heard her sing and decided to do some research. A quick google search and a few minutes later we were watching astounded at the raw talent exhibited in an Arin Crumley video of Sharon Van Etten performing “Damn Right” at Galapagos.

I asked several people to watch the Galapagos video and tell me that I was not overreacting, and the verdict was unanimous — this was a uniquely talented woman with a gifted voice with subtle and poignant songwriting. I reached out to Sharon with a request to record one of her shows. We ended up capturing three of them, in June at Pianos and at Zebulon, and an amazing show in August at Cake Shop.

So when it came time to book the NYCTaper CMJ Showcase, Sharon Van Etten was an easy and obvious choice. On Thursday October 23 at Cake Shop, Sharon will perform upstairs at 5:30pm, essentially headlining the “acoustic” stage at the show.

In person, Sharon is quite friendly and unassuming. That personality comes through quite clearly in this interview, as she answers my wordy and obtuse questions with class and patience. Expect the same on stage on Thursday.

NYCTaper:
Please tell us about the new album. Is there a specific release date, will there be new songs on the album, and if you could describe the arrangements — is it Sharon-and-guitar or will we hear other instruments, bass, drums, strings?

Sharon Van Etten:
The album is set for release in April off of Language of Stone. The love child of Drag City. Run by Greg Weeks of Espers. He recorded and played on my record. There will be minimal accompaniment such as guitar, bass, percussion, and synthesizers (all played by Greg Weeks) and vocal, guitar and added harmonies by me.

NYCT:
There seems to have grown up this folk scene around the Zebulon regulars of which you are a core person. Can you talk about the venue, the other artists and the “scene” (if there is one!)?

SVE:
Zebulon is the most accepting, open venue in Williamsburg. They have a broad range of bands that play there. From Folk to Jazz to Indie to Funk to Experimental noise. You name it. I have played with Scary Mansion, Forest Fire, Ivana XL, Drew Victor, She Keeps Bees, Beastheart, Matt Bauer, Twi the Humble Feather, Meg Baird, Xylophone People, W-S Burn, The Shivers, — When I play they let me curate the whole night, so it usually revolves around folk, indie, country…. but every other night is different there. That’s why I love it. And I’ve never been disappointed. It couldn’t be run by more loving people. I always feel welcome, which is why I will always come back.

NYCT:
Frankly, the song “Consolation Prize” gives me chills every time I hear it. I think it sort of encapsulates the character of your music — poignancy and brutal honesty accompanied by a simple melody and ultimately presented in this sweet voice. This kind of juxtaposition of manner separates a basic singer-songwriter from an authentic folk singer. I know I’m over-analyzing,
but I guess the question is whether this is a natural approach or do you consciously approach songwriting with an idea of contrasting sweetness and bitterness?

SVE:
It’s not my initial intention. My songs come mostly from my journals, where I create a dialogue with a memory of mine and come to terms with my past through song. (sounds cliche, doesn’t it?) But I come across writings that were at one time bitter, and now that I am passed those times and want to sing about them, I am at peace with those times… so I guess that the sweetness comes from closure, and the bitterness is from truth – but I hope the outcome is bittersweet and human.

NYCT:
I’ve heard you say several times “I’m not a pro”, which I interpret to mean that you want to retain your authenticity. With the new album coming, a long tour under your belt, constant local gigging, and now a CMJ show, the shows are going to get more crowded and the venues bigger. Do you still believe that you can’t both be authentic and “big” at the same time?

SVE:
Ha. Funny… When I say “I’m not a pro… It’s because I’m always nervous. And I always mess up. And if there comes a time when my shows get crowded and the venues get bigger, I assure you that if anything, I will be more nervous, and more clumsy, and less pro than ever before.

NYCT:
What are you listening to these days, like in regular rotation in the I-pod, that kind of thing?

SVE:
Fleetwood Mac, Diane Cluck, Meg Baird, Festival, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Sandy Denny, Neil Young, Jana Hunter, Phosphorescent, Forest Fire

NYCT:
Last question, and this one is about “taping”. I appreciate you have permitted me to record several shows and present them “warts and all”. Interestingly, my first experience with your music was the excellent video made by Arin Crumley of one of your Galapagos shows. So I pretty much never would have heard your music if it wasn’t for “taping”. I know that Joly from punkcast has recorded you too. I guess I’ve sort of answered my own question, but can you describe your approach and your thinking behind permitting all these live recordings?

SVE:
Through all my home recordings and studio recordings, I always feel that a live show is best. Even with it’s flaws because you cannot replicate that. That is one moment. To be there, to see the expression on the artist’s face, the energy of the room that the artist feeds from, there is no better substitute than taping it. (other than being there, of course.) For people that haven’t seen me live, at least they can hear me live. Hopefully it creates more of a personal connection to the listener and maybe want to see me live one day.

Stereolab is on tour to promote their August 2008 release Chemical Chords and the band is currently on a three-night run of shows at Irving Plaza. Last night’s performance was the opening night and showed no uncertainty or trepidation as early nights often do. These eighteen-year veterans worked through old and new material with grace and confidence — the setlist included only four songs from Chemical Chords. On a humorous note, the band performed “Ping Pong”, although they did not dedicate it to Meghan McCain.

We recorded this set with the gracious permission of Stereolab manager Martin Pike and we were able to set up in the perfect location in this venue and utilized our best equipment. We are extremely pleased with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Tickets are still available for the Saturday night (Oct 4) concert by Stereolab at Irving Plaza.

Atlas Sound was also recorded and will be posted in the next few days.

Richard Wright, Pink Floyd Keyboardist (1943-2008)

September 15, 2008
By

It just came over the wire that Richard Wright has passed away. The original Pink Floyd keyboard player lost his brief battle with cancer a short time ago. Wright was an original member of Pink Floyd, and other than a brief period of departure in the early 80’s, he remained with the band throughout their history. Rick most recently toured with David Gilmour on his worldwide On An Island tour in 2006-07.

Shannon McArdle August 19, 2008 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Shannon McArdle has released one of the best out-of-nowhere CDs of the entire year — The Summer of the Whore on Bar/None — and a couple of weeks ago we were at the Mercury Lounge CD Release party to witness the live version of the album. Shannon took the stage to the beating drum of “Poison My Cup”, and worked through the post-divorce work with a variety of emotions, from humor to timidity to pride and ultimately redemption. She wrapped up the terrific set with a cover version of the appropriately sardonic “Naughty Fatalist” from her former Athens Georgia “neighbor” Vic Chesnutt.

We recorded this set from the same location as the Hotel Lights set, and other than some chatter and some slight wind from the fans, its an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Hotel Lights August 19, 2008 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

August 23, 2008
By

Darren Jessee has found his own voice — and it is melodic, melancholy, poignant and ultimately hopeful. Eight years after the premature demise of one of the 1990’s greatest alt-pop bands, it has become abundantly clear which member of Ben Folds Five was responsible for the serious and profound songs (i.e. “Brick”), and the intricate vocal harmonies. With Hotel Lights brand new CD Firecracker People, former BFF drummer/songwriter/vocalist Darren Jessee has produced an album of rich melodies, sweet harmonies, and lyrics that speak of the difficulties in finding your own voice. When Jessee sings in “Your Choice” of having “spent years keeping part of yourself down”, its as if Firecracker People is both his coming out party and his long-awaited triumph.

On Tuesday night, Hotel Lights celebrated the release of Firecracker People with a set at Mercury Lounge. The live version of the band is tight and faithful to the recorded songs, and Darren is clearly the focus. He conducts himself with modesty and humor on stage, but when the music begins the songs are voiced with precision and confidence. We expect to see much more of Hotel Lights in the future and expect that the new CD will see many spins in our deck.

This concert was recorded from our standard location at the Mercury Lounge, slightly in front of the board and to the right. This is a recording of fine clarity and the cardioid microphones and the height of the microphone pole avoided much of the moderate chatter in the back of the room. Enjoy!
