Real Estate: October 24, 2009 Market Hotel – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The Showpaper benefit at Market Hotel, produced by ToddP and curated by Ryan Schreiber of Pitchfork, was a marathon musical event but was infinitely worth the time and effort. One of the true revelations of the night, and indeed all of CMJ, was the performance by Real Estate. I had seen the band last summer opening for Love Is All at Music Hall, which was an unmemorable performance where the band suffered through some technical problems. On Saturday, Real Estate was in its element and brought a substantial fan base to the event. The band’s mix of freak folk-rock and psychedelia is rich in guitar band influences and punk ethos, but the most compelling element was the authenticity and the fun-without-self-consciousness in the performance. After a week of seeing far too many bands striking a pose, I welcomed the sounds of a band that seemed to like each other, like themselves, and like the music they were playing.

We recorded this set with the four-track recorder and captured a stereo feed from the board mixed with two Neumann mics in the room. As has been reported elsewhere, there were some significant issues with the sound system during the evening, but fortunately not during this set. The sound quality on this recording is quite clear but somewhat “raw” and unbalanced. With that caveat, enjoy!

Taper’s Choice: April 24, 2022 The Sultan Room Rooftop

Billing themselves as “Not the Jam Band We Need But the Jam Band We Deserve,” Taper’s Choice are somewhat mysterious newcomers to the scene—and they’re sure having fun with it. Here’s what we know: the band is a jam supergroup comprised of Dave Harrington (Darkside), Chris Tomson (Vampire Weekend), Alex Bleeker (Real Estate), and Zach Tenorio (Arc Iris). Beyond that scant info, it wasn’t until recently that tunes have emerged. Previously available only at merch tables at the band’s few California shows earlier this year, the cassette-only Choice Tapes Vol. 1 circulated word-of-mouth for a while before finally landing on Bandcamp along with Choice Tapes Vol. 2. (I hear Vol. 3 is in the works.) Songs on the tapes are titled only with single or double curly quotes on both volumes but if you listen hard maybe you’ll hear some similarities to jams circulating in “trader” circles on the Live Music Archive.

We were fortunate to get invited out to the band’s exclusive (and sold out) first show in New York (or Jam Hollywood to those in the know). Two sets under the stars at Brooklyn’s Sultan Room (one of the premier destinations for jams in the borough) and we were sold 100% on Taper’s Choice. These guys even have their own festival! Take that Phish. And go buy some tickets to Choice Fest.

Photos from Brooklyn Bowl by Christopher Bruno

In case you’ve been hibernating for the summer, you should know that Garcia Peoples have a new album out on October 18, One Step Behind. It’s a two song deal, with the title track being a newly-recorded 32-minute version of the song that’s been a staple in their live sets for a while now. You can preorder that for October delivery and get an 8-minute radio edit immediately. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing! The second song on the record is a new one, “Heart and Soul,” that you can preview here from their recent Brooklyn Bowl gig opening up for Howlin’ Rain and Ryley Walker. A couple other songs make their first appearance on one of our recordings: “Gliding Through” and “One at a Time,” plus a jam I’m pretty sure we’ve heard before in some form.

Then travel back to July when the Garcias played with Chris Forsyth at Market Hotel. We’ve already posted their set backing Forsyth, but here finally is the proper Garcia Peoples set. And by the way, you can see the Garcia Peoples backing Chris Forsyth again this Friday September 6 at Nublu. Do not miss that!

For more of that very necessary Garcia Peoples fix they’re playing Philadelphia on Sept 14 with Chris Forsyth and Sept 29 in Asbury Park with Real Estate. Then in October, they’ll be doing a residency at Nublu every Thursday night. Wow!

I recorded this with a pair of MBHO hypercardioid mics positioned at our usual spot at Brooklyn Bowl. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 29, 2019 Solid Sound Festival

Pete reports:

“Saturday night’s show kicked off with “Hell is Chrome”. For me, Jeff could have said “Thanks and good night” and walked off stage after that, and I would have been satisfied. But the festivities continued with another AGIB entry (Muzzle of Bees) followed by a couple from YHF (IATTBYH and War on War), and back to AGIB’s “Company in My Back”. A few songs later, they debuted two brand new songs, “Empty Corner” (which had been featured earlier in the day in a surround sound installation at the museum) and “White Wooden Cross.” Overall, the Saturday night installment was classic, good-as-it-gets, Wilco fare. 24 songs, solid entries from the entire body of work, and a nice two-song encore to cap off the night. Absolutely electrifying, and exactly what one would expect from this band at their own festival in the Saturday night, beachfront real estate portion of the weekend.”

Pete recorded this show with the trusty Neumann cards from a very advantageous position at the Soundboard cage. The sound is superb, enjoy!

Tyvek: August 26, 2017 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

August 27, 2017
By

Tyvek took an uncharacteristically long break from recording between 2012’s On Triple Beams and last year’s Origin of What, but of course it was worth the wait. If you haven’t picked that one up yet, here’s your official reminder. It’s more of the raw energy you’ve come to expect from Tyvek, whose live performances also haven’t slowed down a bit in the last ten-plus years since “Frustration Rock” made them the biggest little punk band from Detroit. Tyvek is literally the most fun you can have watching a band do their thing, but throw in a mid-70s August day in Union Pool’s backyard and you’re in rock and roll heaven. Tyvek and the packed crowd sent off 2017’s Summer Thunder series in the finest form.

I recorded this set with acidjack’s Schoeps MK22’s set up right in front of the band, combined with a board feed from our man, Doug. The sound is raw—turn this one up for full effect!

Martin Courtney: February 13, 2016 Baby’s All Right

March 8, 2016

There’s much love for the band Real Estate both at this site and in NYC in general, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s a fan. With the detractors, it seems that what bugs them the most is that Real Estate make things too easy — their music seems to positively roll forth from them in a smooth wave, with breezy melodies and approachable hooks, vocals wafting in a comfortable haze. That voice comes from one Martin Courtney, who rolled out a solo effort, Many Moons, last year. It’s what you hope for in a solo album — a scaled-back version of a Real Estate album in some ways, a much more personal, intimate album in others. If you don’t like Real Estate, well, I don’t know what you to tell you, because Courtney doesn’t abandon the band’s formula so much as peel back a few layers. “You will not find me wasting my energy” begins one couplet on the album’s opener “Awake,” and you get the sense with this record that it’s not a lack of effort by any means, but it is a great example of not trying too hard.

Courtney hit that sweet spot at this recent Baby’s All Right show, a venue which at this point feels like a second home for a certain caste of Brooklyn music regulars. This performance, falling near the end of the tour, had the mellow, easy feel of a weekend show before a friendly crowd. We got to hear the entire album, highlighted by the single “Airport Bar,” and the kickoff track “Northern Highway.” Of course, it wouldn’t have been a show by a Real Estate band member without some crucial covers, and Courtney nailed both the placid “Harvest Moon” and Echo and the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” before the grand finale, with opener EZTV joining the headliners for a Feelies cover, “On the Roof,” from their second album The Good Earth. It was a night for the familiar, a night for the good, and one for a longtime friend to share with the people who were with him from the beginning.

The engineer Jason Kelly of Baby’s All Right recorded and mixed this set. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Alex Bleeker & the Freaks “Play Dead”: December 30, 2015 Rough Trade NYC

January 6, 2016
By

IMG_1140

If you were a fan of the Grateful Dead, and you saw the actual band live, then you’ve probably got more than your share of opinions about the various combinations of the remaining parts of it who’ve tried to transact on the original’s greatness. As someone who never saw the actual band (but has seen some successful and less-than-successful related projects), I’m not here to convince you. But for my money, there’s something rewarding, something essential, about watching much-younger musicians, with full careers filled with their own original material in front of them, paying tribute to one of rock music’s foundational bands.

I  loved the Brooklyn Bowl show that we posted by Alex Bleeker and The Freaks — that one a combo run through their new album and some other originals, followed by a “Play Dead” set that’s become a staple of many of their live shows. This one flipped that script, with Bleeker and pals offering up a 100-minute set consisting almost entirely of Dead covers. This — my final show of the year — was billed as the afterparty to Phish’s 12/30 Madison Square Garden show, and the celebratory air from that event (an especially strong performance from this year’s MSG run) carried over into the more intimate confines of Rough Trade NYC.

Overall, this “Play Dead” was a looser, better and arguably truer performance to the spirit of the original band. While the Brooklyn Bowl set consisted mainly of discrete run-throughs of each song, you’ll notice that this set was filled with segues, kicking off with “China Cat Sunflower” into a surging “I Know You Rider” before venturing into  cosmic territory with “Eyes to the World” into “He’s Gone” into “The Other One,” taking a short detour through “Dark Star” and ending up, improbably, with a Bleeker original, “Sealong Hair,” from their latest record, Country Agenda. After that came three more non-Dead tunes (two more originals, plus their regular-rotation cover of Mountain Man’s “Animal Tracks,” a fierce jam in its own right. Where Bleeker was joined last time by Real Estate’s Martin Courtney, here we had another cameo by one of his Ridgewood, NJ pals, Julian Lynch and multi-talented Dave Harrington (of many bands, but perhaps best-known for his work in Darkside). The band managed to deliver a little birthday salutation to Harringon in between “Tennessee Jed” and “St. Stephen,” which closed the set. By that point it was 2 a.m. and the club’s neighbors weren’t going to tolerate any more. For those of us inside, though, this was an afterparty that we’d have been happy to continue all night.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Rough Trade engineer Leah, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

List of All Available NYCTaper Recordings – 2011 Posts

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back four years at 2011. The following year (2012) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.
