Sunburned Hand of the Man: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

May 3, 2016

This was our second North Carolina journey with Sunburned Hand of the Man, having witnessed the awesome spectacle that was their 2014 Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU day show at Hopscotch. Like the recent show in New York City that we caught at Union Pool, this night at the Three Lobed Recordings Sweet Sixteen Spectacular found the out/noise collective taking more of a song-based approach. Which isn’t to say, in any way, that this was somehow a “traditional” performance; like anything Sunburned and many things Three Lobed, this performance celebrated the experimental and the expeditionary, with those American flags in the backdrop an ironic comment on the freak flags that these artists so willfully fly. Once again, we got to witness a furious version of “The Jaybird,” but other than that and “Double Purity,” this was an entirely different performance than at Union Pool. It meant something for a band of Sunburned’s underground stature to be here alongside such a diverse array of Three Lobed veterans, from Nathan Bowles’ forward-looking Appalachian banjo performance to Steve Gunn’s solo guitar set to Mary Lattimore and Elysse Thebner’s ambient harp and keyboard set. Among all that great music, perhaps nobody more than Sunburned (and OK, Bardo Pond) stood for all the heads in the audience, the unique gathering of the like-minded that this label has brought together. Once again, it was a divine thing.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other performances of the day, with 8 channels of combined soundboard feed from engineer Brad Womack, onstage microphones, and audience microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

In case you live under a rock, Steve Gunn is a pretty big deal in the independent music world. Along with working with Kurt Vile, he’s released a sprawl of killer records, from his duo work with John Truscinski, to his collaborations with Hiss Golden Messenger, Mike Cooper and the Black Twig Pickers, to his work with GHQ, to his singer/songwriter solo work. There is no version of Steve Gunn that isn’t great, that isn’t able to worm its way into your brain and stick there, and maybe make you think in the process.

Like Bardo Pond, Gunn is another artist that Three Lobed Recordings has been aligned with for a long time, and the fact that Steve would take the stage twice at the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, in celebration of the label’s sixteenth anniversary, says what you need to know about his commitment right back. If (as it would seem) Gunn will prove to be one of the Three Lobed alumni with the greatest popular appeal, it won’t be because he’s abandoned the spirited, inventive and challenging style of playing that early fans have always cherished. The proof of that lies in this single set from King’s, as Steve closed out the morning portion of the day with just three long songs. Sure, “Old Strange” is a bit easier to hum along to than GHQ’s “Four Trees,” but it’s still fifteen freaking minutes long, as played here, with the lyrics and the chorus almost afterthoughts amidst the guitar work that almost makes you forget there’s just one of him up there. That doesn’t discount one of Gunn’s other most-loved and longest epics, “The Lurker (Extended),” which graced the Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them boxed set on Three Lobed, and arrived in stunning form here. He closed with “Mr. Franklin,” another relatively uncommon number in his current tour repertoire, and readied himself for the second half of this day, when he would join John Truscinski for their first duo set in several years (that recording coming soon).

You owe it to yourself to hear where Steve is going next — preorder Eyes on the Lines here, and check out the new single “Conditions Wild” on YouTube.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from the day, with Schoeps MK22 open cardiod microphones onstage, MBHO microphones in the audience, and a multichannel soundboard feed from Justin Perrachon. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back four years at 2011. The following year (2012) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

Wooden Wand: September 7, 2012 Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show and Berkeley Cafe (2 shows! Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Back when he was in law school, my college buddy Cory Rayborn decided to put out a 10″ record for the band Bardo Pond, on a new imprint he called Three Lobed Recordings. Cory didn’t have any grand cred-building mission or even a firm direction in mind; he just wanted to give wider exposure to the outsider music he held dear. So after the Bardo Pond release came another, then another, then many others, until the tiny North Carolina label that my friend founded as a hobby suddenly found itself compiling a tenth anniversary vinyl-only box set – which sold out in a matter of days. And at this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival, Three Lobed and the Durham, NC-based WXDU (nominally Duke’s college radio station, but staffed almost completely by locals) brought together an incredible lineup of artists who have released records on Three Lobed, together with other artists who are friends and admirers.

James Jackson Toth, aka Wooden Wand, first joined the Three Lobed family on the label’s 14th release, with the Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice album l’un marquee contre la moissoneuse. Toth has a staggering catalog of releases to his name, including everything from homemade tapes and CD-Rs to the recent deluxe version of his current record Briarwood (which, if you Kickstarter funded enough money, included a USB drive filled with over 100 demos, live recordings, alternate mixes, and outtakes). While Briarwood and Toth’s other most recent material could be best described as country-driven rock, Toth’s work has taken many twists and turns, with deep dives into free jazz, noise and acid folk. Toth has a new album on the way by the name of Blood Oaths of the New Blues, which promises to continue in the extremely accessible (and well-produced) vein of Briarwood. Here at the WXDU/Three Lobed Day Show at Raleigh’s King’s Barcade, we had the pleasure of seeing Toth take the stage to perform a short-but-satisfying set that included several of the new Blood Oaths tunes.

After a heartfelt thank you to Rayborn and his accomplishments with Three Lobed, Toth dug right in with “Mother Midnight”, from his 2006 record Second Attention, a mid tempo rocker that showcases the deep soul in Toth’s voice. You’d never know, from listening, that he is originally from upstate New York. From there, the new material began with the brooding “Southern Colorado Song”, one of several of Toth’s new songs that demonstrates the further refinement to his songwriting even as it stays true to his essential aesthetic.  Perhaps the most moving song of the set was the new “Dungeon of Irons”, whose lyrics were culled by Toth from a compilation of the actual last words of death row prisoners. In Toth’s hands, these scattered musings become a profound statement about mortality and the essential unfairness that plagues both life and death. As this set wound down with the new song “Jhonn Balance” (in tribute to the lead singer of the experimental band Coil), Toth’s day was just beginning; Wooden Wand played Berkeley Cafe down the street later that night.

For this post we are offering both the Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show set that I recorded, as well as a partial recording of the Berkeley Cafe set that was recorded by a local taper Evan Lamb. While the Berkeley recording was done with less complicated equipment, Toth felt that this was the better of the two performances, and this recording adds an extra song not played at the earlier show.

Thanks to James Toth for allowing us to post these sets.

MMOSS: May 5, 2012 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

One doesn’t normally think of Dover New Hampshire as a home for neo-psychedelic rock, but MMOSS is the latest of outstanding purveyor of this genre and they call the “Live Free or Die” state home. When Woods invites a band to tour with them, as they did with MMOSS for a month this Spring, its a pretty good clue to us that the band will be a quality outfit. At 285 Kent a couple of weeks back, it was obvious that MMOSS was the real deal. Our first impression, with the two guitarists flanking a female vocalist/flutist, was their resemblance to the excellent Bardo Pond. And this comparison isn’t far off, in terms of the live sound. But MMOSS’s album, the superb i, is a collection of psych-garage nuggets. At 285, the band’s set featured a couple of shorter songs, but MMOSS did stretch it out for a couple of numbers before the too-short set ended with an extended jam. We are streaming “Kitty Sorrow”, a standout track from the album performed to perfection.

I recorded this set in the same manner as those of Woods and Crystal Stilts and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

With CMJ in the rear view mirror, and the season’s first snow having fallen — its time to post our Winter schedule. Highlights include the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah run, the run of the National shows at Beacon Theatre, and a few neat reunions.

[Caveat: Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime.]

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get us in the door and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember each person on the nyctaper crew does this all for free — the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc. — so treat us fairly.
