Wilco has wowed this summer in a few ways — first with their exceptional Solid Sound acoustic performance (which we captured here), then with the surprise free release of Star Wars, easily their finest album in ten years. Here at Gathering of the Vibes on the Bridgeport seaside, the band built on the momentum they created with their full-album performance of Star Wars back at Pitchfork Music Festival with another full-album run through, followed by some of the band’s best-known songs as well as the rarity “Laminated Cat.” As a special treat, Warren Haynes, he of every single guest appearance at northeastern jam festivals, joined for “California Stars” along with Joe Russo to close things out. But lest you think this was a standard-issue performance, Jeff Tweedy and co., buoyed by the presence of Nels Cline, turned even the older tunes into noisier, edgier renditions than we’ve seen recently, perhaps alienating some of this festival’s core audience, but proving that Wilco is returning to what made Yankee Hotel Foxtrot their true landmark album, and what marks them as so much bigger than being the “dad rock” of their detractors. Star Wars has proven that this band has many more good years ahead, and we’ll be thrilled to be a part of them.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the taper’s section. While distance and being outdoors always impact sound quality, overall this is an excellent effort. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 26, 2015 Solid Sound Festival – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Friday night Wilco show of the band’s semi-annual Solid Sound Festival has become the thing of surprises. Two years ago, the Friday performance became the now-legendary all-covers show that blew up the internet overnight and is by far the most popular recording in the history of this site. For this year’s Fest, the opening night set featured an all-acoustic performance with the band playing it in an old school centered microphone bluegrass style. While this configuration is not entirely new to Wilco — the encore segments of the 20th Anniversary the Fall tour featured a similar setup — the performance of an entire two-plus hour show certainly was a novelty. Additionally, in the long-form set the various band members got a chance to stretch their instrumentation wings — we heard some mandolin, accordion, banjo, slide guitar and stand-up piano. The show’s setlist was not particularly rare, but that wasn’t the point. It was the band’s ability to provide interesting new arrangements to Wilco classics that makes this show a special event. And, in celebration of the recent win for fairness, Jeff Tweedy saluted marriage equality by declaring in the middle of “Hesitating Beauty” that it was “so much nicer singing this song now that everyone can get married”. We’re streaming that track below.

Wilco will be on the Festival circuit for the most part this Summer, dates here. We’ll catch them again at the Gathering of the Vibes in Connecticut in August.

Our friend Pete recorded this show from the area directly in front of the soundboard with the hypercardioid Neumanns. As with all of Wilco FOH Stan’s work, this was is another excellent mix and the sound quality (other than the boisterous crowd) is quite excellent. Enjoy!

In the early days, I did these lists of all of the recordings for a given year at the site. I hadn’t done one since 2009. Lately, there have been requests to continue to post these lists since it gives people easy access to the archives. So here is 2014. I’ll work backwards to previous years until the entire site is cataloged. Please don’t take this as an invitation to download vast quantities of recordings at once. That’s just gluttonous and the site and the server can not handle massive concurrent downloads. If I find someone downloading like 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll just block your IP address, its that simple.

Wilco is currently celebrating their 20th year as a band, and we’ve been there virtually from the beginning — my first Wilco show was at Mercury Lounge in 1996. And throughout these past two decades, the band has consistently delivered quality albums, epic live shows and an infinite number of memories. I think its fair to say that many of my own personal peak experiences have come with Wilco as a soundtrack — whether it be a classic 1997 show at Irving Plaza, a rewarding trip to Coney Island, a great roadtrip upstate, or another great roadtrip upstate, or what is perhaps this site’s highlight last Summer’s cover extravaganza. So this year I even considered dropping everything and driving down to Virginia for a day. Unfortunately that was not possible, but that’s what friends are for. And this site has been blessed with some great friends, including Kubacheck who volunteered to “cover” Lockn Festival for the site. So we’ll have both Wilco sets from this Festival, as will we have the recently announced Portchester shows. For this night, the takeaway was Jeff Tweedy’s tongue-in-cheek revelation that he hates rainbows. Although the set was a truncated ninety-minute festival-sized Wilco show, there were also several musical highlights. As this is the 20th year celebration, some early numbers have been featured in the setlist and we are streaming from their first album “Shouldn’t Be Ashamed”. See you at the Cap in October!

Kubacheck recorded this show from the official taper’s section with his high-end MBHO cards. I did some post-production which included boosting the levels and adding some tasty EQ to provide some punch. Overall, its an outstanding recording that is consistent with the many quality Wilco recordings we’ve had on NYCTaper. Enjoy!

Wilco: July 28, 2012 Brewery Ommegang – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming Songs

July 31, 2012

After catching Wilco’s excellent show at Terminal 5 earlier in the week, to say that we were excited about trekking up to the lovely Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown to see them again would be a gross understatement.  It’s becoming a bit of a tradition for the entire NYCtaper crew to make it to at least one outdoor Wilco concert a year and we decided to expand our range outside of the city after the superb Central Park gigs last September (HERE and HERE).  The tradition also appears to bring rain with it, but judging by the fabulous time both the band and attendees were having you wouldn’t have guessed a single drop fell that night.  No doubt the exceptional Belgian-style beers the brewery serves as well as their hospitality and the gorgeous upstate surroundings bolstered our good spirits.  It became evident early on that Jeff Tweedy and company were as impressed with the fans as we were with them, citing a checklist of criteria that makes for a great crowd at one point.  Along with regular favorites “Heavy Metal Drummer” and “Impossible Germany” (which is always an opportunity for the impressive Nels Cline to shine on guitar), the troupe shrugged off the wet weather with an infrequent showing of “Either Way”, and brought the rare “Laminated Cat” and “What’s the World Got in Store” back into rotation.  Topping the evening with two encores, including a triple-shot of songs from ‘Being There‘, it’s nights like these that keep us eager for the next show and make recording them so enjoyable.

The rain aside, between the four of us we ran no less than six pairs of microphones and were able to set up very close to center right in front of the soundboard.  Having so many choices at hand, we ultimately decided to use acidjack‘s Schoeps and Johnny’s Milabs for our mix.  With Wilco’s FOH engineer extraordinaire Stan Doty at the helm, the sound was exemplary and, in light of the weather conditions, our recording is really quite excellent.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Wilco: September 23, 2011 Central Park Summerstage – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Whereas the previous evening we saw the damp weather held at bay, for Wilco’s second night at Central Park’s Summerstage the band and attendees weren’t quite as lucky.  All parties took it in stride and the crowd, despite the rain or maybe because of it, seemed particularly enthusiastic.  Once again pulling a lion’s share of tracks from the new album, The Whole Love (which has its official release today), we were also treated to crowd-pleasers “Passenger Side”, “Impossible Germany” and “Heavy Metal Drummer”, and wonderful takes on live staples “Bull Black Nova”, “Misunderstood” and “Jesus, Etc.”, which Jeff Tweedy dedicated to us.  With all the good stuff going on stage, Wilco made it pretty easy to forget about the drizzle on our heads.

As with the night before, the entire NYCTaper crew made it out for the concert.  Paring down our rig considerably due to the inclement weather, we were still able to get an excellent recording and hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

If there’s a band we hope that people associate with what nyctaper stands for, its Wilco. They have appeared so many times on this site that its often difficult to invent new superlatives to describe the Wilco concert experience. Last night at Summerstage, the band again delivered to its fans another epic NYC show, on par with the legendary Irving Plaza or Hammerstein or McCarren Pool shows of previous years. On tour in support of their latest release, The Whole Love (due on September 27), the band again delivered a two-plus hour high-energy set that dug deep into their catalog (an A.M. cut streaming below) while it also featured eight songs from the new album. The title track has already earned encore status, and we’re streaming it below. Of special note was Jeff Tweedy’s remembrance of the Wilco sets at Town Hall almost exactly ten years to the day, when a still-shocked NYC found some comfort in superbly delivered and heartfelt two nights of music. Ten years later, Wilco is still providing the City with the same gifts.

The entire NYCTaper crew was on hand to record this set. While we feared the worst of the elements, fortunately the rain held off and the winds were minimal. We set up near the back of the floor because our original advantageous position was actually an obstruction to the lighting projections. The crew ran 3 separate rigs, featuring twelve high-end microphones. This particular recording is my standard Neumann + DPA 4021 rig, and its a surprisingly excellent recording, all things considered. We will likely feature some of the other captures in the coming weeks. Enjoy!

NYCTaper Top 10 Concerts of 2010

December 28, 2010
By

Here is our annual Top 10, a completely subjective ranking of our favorite shows of 2010. Acidjack will be along soon with our annual “highlights” post (with a downloadable song mix).

1. Holly Miranda August 8, 2010 Vivo in Vino
This night was without a doubt the best time I had at a show all year. The combination of great wine, great company and a relaxed solo performance by Holly led to a very memorable evening. It helped that Holly dedicated “I’d Rather Go Blind” to me personally. Her set consisted primarily of covers and her inimitable voice nailed each one of them. The guys at Vino are terrific people, and we partied with the rest of the wine on an East Village rooftop late into the night. An unforgettable time.

2. Yo La Tengo December 7, 2010 Maxwell’s
The best of the eight strong Hanukkah 2010 shows, this night featured the superb guitar work of Nels Cline. The extended jams of “Glitter” and “Hatchet” were song of the year contenders.

3. Built to Spill September 2, 2010 Rocks Off Concert Cruise
This show was the second best time we had all year — BTS playing literally inside of the packed crowd on the main deck of the Rocks Off cruise. The band seemed to thrive on the energy and the surroundings as their performance was lengthy and inspired — it was two hours of smiles all around.

4. Oneida March 19, 2010 Knitting Factory
Oneida live performances are always bigger than life. This one was perhaps the best we’ve ever seen this band. The show started with a crashing “Ghost in the Room” which gave way to an untitled new jam which endured for an unbelievable twenty-nine minutes. While the rest of the set could have been considered icing after that jam, it continued along in the same vein with tremendous versions of “Up With People”, “Sheets of Easter” and “I Will Haunt You” to close the show.

5. Holly Miranda May 26, 2010 Bowery Ballroom
I love these events where artists headline and sell out Bowery Ballroom for the first time. Its sort of like a signpost along their career path that reads “I Made It”. On this particular night, Holly not only “made it” but delivered a stunning performance — her Etta James cover is perhaps my favorite single song played this year.

6. Pavement September 19, 21, 22, 23, and 24 Williamsburg and Central Park
A reunion we truly never expected to see, this was a week-long celebration of the most enduring band of the 90s. The setlists varied, the band played two-hour shows, and they seemed to be having a great time. Pavement likely won’t be back again, so this was a perfect final send-off.

7. Woods June 25, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg
A band that just keeps getting better, Woods relaxed neo-psychedelia with folk roots can be at time twisted and other moments melodically simple. On this night it was the extended jams that made the show.

8. Tune-Yards August 2, 2010
The opening night of the Rock Shop was a winner. We came to see Sharon Van Etten, and stayed for the headliner. What we witnessed was an incredible live talent. Merrill Garbus creates intricate layered beats and strong vocals to propel her African-influenced songs. This night the packed venue rocked with every beat.

9. Owen Pallett April 24, 2010 Webster Hall
The most talented performer we saw all year. Its breathtaking that one person can create such huge symphony-like pieces, and the bonus is that the songs are well written with clever lyrics.

10. The Joy Formidable January 12, 2010 Pianos
We saw TJF three times this year, but this first show at the tiny Pianos really impressed. It was a ferocious performance, we predicted the obvious — that the band would soon be big — and were proved right when they headlined Bowery later in the year.

Honorable Mention:
Akron/Family March 3, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg
Ted Leo April 9, 2010 Irving Plaza
Panda Bear September 11, 2010 Governor’s Island
Pearl and The Beard September 25, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions
Sharon Van Etten October 8, 2010 The Rock Shop
Suzanne Vega November 14, 2010 Housing Works Bookstore
Jeff Tweedy December 4, 2010 Bowery Ballroom

Its time to finally shake off the CMJ hangover and get another schedule posted. The Winter season is usually a very fruitful period for the site, and this year is no exception. We’re happy to have Yo La Tengo’s shows at Maxwell’s back again — we’re covering at least five as of now.

Wilco August 13, 2008 McCarren Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads

August 15, 2008

Wilco has spoiled its fans for years — long energetic shows, consistently excellent albums, interesting collaborations — they are the finest working American band. Wednesday night at McCarren Pool, the Brooklyn fans were treated to a special evening of perhaps the most complete Wilco performance NYC has ever seen. After 27 songs, eleven encores, and two-and-a-half hours of music that covered all aspects of their career, there could be no gripe from any of the 5000 guests save for the most petulant, fickle or inexperienced concert-goers.

The setlist was a complete review of Wilco’s music — of the first 12 numbers there was at least one song from 7 different albums. All the classics were performed, along with a nice selection of rare old chestnuts (“Far Far Away”, “Kingpin”) and some obscure tracks (“Blood of the Lamb”, “Pieholden Suite”). The band also added a trio of horns (“Total Pro Horns”) for this tour who added an interesting dimension to several older numbers. Jeff Tweedy’s voice has fully recovered since his surgery two years ago, and it seems to be completely back to its original strength. Jeff threw quite a few playful verbal ribs at the crowd, although he refrained from throwing actual food into the audience.

We recorded from directly in front of the soundboard in the center. While the packed crowd was a bit too chatty around us, the music was expertly mixed by Wilco’s talented sound crew and they provided us with a superb sound capture. Enjoy!
