Lou Reed died on Sunday morning, October 27, 2013. If that fact is important to you, then by now you’ve read the hundreds of excellent tributes across the web. The man was complicated, but one thing is for certain — his vast and ubiquitous influence over multiple genres of music and musical lifestyles will be felt for generations to come. So it was abundantly appropriate that on the night of his death, one of New York’s premiere DIY venues — in a warehouse no less — hosted one of the country’s premiere garage-rock bands. I don’t think its a reach to say that if Lou Reed’s life had not taken the path he began nearly fifty years ago, 285 Kent and Thee Oh Sees would not exist, or at least exist in the way they do now. ToddP recognized the importance of the evening, as his house music was all-Reed for virtually the entire night. And as Thee Oh Sees were about to take the stage, the ipod mix queued up “Walk On The Wild Side”, and a natural and spontaneous cheer arose from the packed house. As John Dwyer approached the mic, he dedicated the set to Lou, and began to play. And play they did. Thee Oh Sees are one of today’s most engaging live acts, but this performance was special. Each song was a bundle of kinetic energy and it seemed as if the crowd was of one mind, moshing in beat to every single song for this meaty and lengthy set. The band is on tour to support their latest album Floating Coffin, and while the setlist included more than half the album, there were also plenty of old favorites. Thee Oh Sees play locally again tonight (Tuesday October 29), at Irving Plaza. As of this writing, there are less than 100 tickets left. We’ll be there, and if you’re reading this, hopefully you will be too.

I recorded this set by mounting the Sennheiser cards on the beam ten feet from the stage and mixed it with a fine board mix. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Elizabeth and the Catapult: September 22, 2013 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

As they often do, this year’s edition of Backyard Brunch Sessions gave us a different take on the band Elizabeth and the Catapult than you might get from listening to their official releases. Band founder Elizabeth Ziman, a New York native, has a proud and diverse musical pedigree, from classical education at the Berklee College of Music to work in film scoring to spending some time busking in the subway. Joined by new members (as of the last album, at least) Lauren Balthrop and Jonno Linden, Ziman has been putting together material for a new release, and what we heard on this afternoon were soul-searching, mature evolutions beyond the band’s previous albums Taller Children and The Other Side of Zero. 

The new songs also offer some of Ziman’s most compelling hooks yet. Of particular note was “I Wish I Didn’t,” whose tone of resignation was lightened by some humorous moments with the DIY instrument selection. Ziman, Balthrop and Linden joined together for gorgeous vocal harmonies, particularly on “Please Don’t Tell Me A Lie” and “Go Away My Lover”, the lone offering played off of The Other Side of Zero. We also got to hear one of Ziman’s favorite Dawes songs, a lovely rendition of “When My Time Comes” with Ziman and Balthrop doing a soaring vocal turn. The band led off with a Balthrop original, “Please Don’t Tell Me A Lie”, which she has performed with her own project Dear Georgiana. Although this lovely back yard on Grand Street in Williamsburg didn’t feel quite the same as a subway station, the show offered some of that same loose, unadorned feel. And it proved, without doubt, that this band has the skills to keep a crowd excited.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and MK8 microphone in the mid-side configuration in the middle of the band, plus spot mics on the performers. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Suburbs: September 27, 2013 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

So yeah, its the Summer of 1986. About a month after I attended that legendary Replacements show about which I’ve written on this site, another one of the great 1980s Minneapolis bands played the Ritz. The Suburbs did not have the exposure of MN bands like Husker Du and The Replacements, but they were on Twin/Tone for five years or so before moving onto a major label. Love Is The Law was their first major album and it was a college radio staple for a couple of years. By the time they appeared at the Ritz in ’86 as the second of three bands opening for the Australian band The Church, the Suburbs had been together for eight years and released 4 albums and 2 EPs of their quirky glam new-wavish blue-eyed soul. And I had every single one of them on vinyl. I recall the set that night was all familiar material and since the band traveled with a horn section, the finale was “Love Is The Law”. I didn’t even stay for the “headliner”. But little did I realize on that warm summer night that it wouldn’t be for another 27 years before the Suburbs would play New York again. The band broke up in 1987 and although they’ve played multiple reunion shows over the years, all of the shows have been in Minnesota. But fate has a funny way of intervening and when the Minnesota marriage equality movement adopted “Love Is The Law” as their theme song and the Minnesota legislature legalized marriage for all, the Suburbs performed the song on the steps of the Capital with the Governor on guitar. The increased exposure seemed to give the band momentum to finish recording some new songs, and after a successful Kickstarter, the Suburbs’s first album of new material in nearly 30 years was born. If Si Sauvage is an historically unlikely album, its a remarkably good one. The Suburbs always had a quirky edge that has perhaps softened a bit, but the songcraft (and sense of humor) are as strong as ever. On Friday night the band returned to NYC and although it wasn’t 1986 all over again, the Suburbs delivered a tight one-hour set mixed between the new album and old classics. Of the older material, “Music for Boys” from 1981’s Credit in Heaven was a near perfect version and we’re streaming it below. But like the Ritz all those years ago, it was “Love Is The Law” to close the set. I suspect it won’t be another 3 decades before I see the Suburbs again.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with a soundboard feed. The crowd is a little rowdy and you can hear that even in the mixdown, but overall the sound quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Villages: September 6, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Kennedy Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

One of the best things about festivals like Hopscotch Music Festival is being exposed not just to artists you know you want to see, but ones you didn’t know you wanted to see. I wasn’t aware of Asheville, NC based Ross Gentry, who records as Villages, before he took the stage at Kennedy Theater on the second night. But as soon as Gentry began creating his custom-made soundscape, I was grateful to be in the right place to hear the work of this brilliant emerging artist in the world of ambient and drone music. After a frantic day of day shows and main stage recording, sitting in the cool, dark Kennedy Theater for this Villages set felt like a reset button on the whole day. During this piece, you can hear the wash of running water, keyboards, guitars, found sounds and more combine to create an organic whole that is as soothing as it is thought-provoking.

At times it’s difficult with this kind of music to actually understand what the artist is doing, so I asked Ross to explain. Here is how this set was constructed:

All of the sounds I use are created using organic instruments and field recordings. My sets basically consists of a series of tape loops, which were present on stage, as well as electric guitar which was running through a series of effects pedals. The laptop itself it basically a means of triggering field recordings and various atmospheres, and recording and looping my guitar and tapes to further process and expand the sounds. It’s a very open and evolving process. It certainly leaves a lot of room to really feel out a space and develop pieces naturally.

The result on this night was a piece I felt was a beautiful meditation on the human experience, an oasis of calm in the midst of a frantic (but fun) festival. Gentry’s work was some of the most moving and powerful that I experienced at the entire festival and I hope more fans have a chance to experience his work. This recording was made with Schoeps MK41 microphones from an ideal spot in the venue. The recording captures the feel of the room very well and makes for a particularly good listen on headphones. Enjoy!

We first caught up with the Philadelphia-based garage rockers Spacin’ at 285 Kent back in April. As that review noted, this band is part of a proud and growing Philadelphia music tradition that continues to grow stronger as Brooklyn gets taken over by laptops. This is authentic, hard-rocking spaced-out rock for any era, but music that’s badly needed in this one. At this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival, fans in the know got to experience Spacin’ doing two somewhat-different sets in the span of two days.

First the band brought it hard at a rock-dominated bill at Raleigh’s Kings Barcade on Friday night. Then, for those hoping to nurse their hangovers in a positive way, they joined the more eclectic Paradise of Bachelors day show bill, following on the heels of Lonnie Holley. Band founder Jason Killinger had an especially busy Saturday, as he would join his other band, Birds of Maya, to close out the PoB day show. Of the two, it was this raunchier, rawer set that stood out for me — even in a WPA-era amphitheater backdropped by a rose garden, Spacin’ turned out an elemental, hard-hitting rock show that I won’t soon forget. Their first full-length, Deep Thuds, is a must-have for fans of riffed-out rock, as well as aficionados of great album art. Tracks from each show are streaming below, and both shows can be downloaded as well.

I recorded the King’s set with a rig installed there with the assistance of a couple of North Carolina friends, consisting of my Audio Technica 3031 microphones and a mono board feed. The Paradise of Bachelors Day Show rig consisted of Schoeps MK4V microphones in front of the stage, plus a stereo soundboard feed. Both recordings are outstanding. While there is a bit of distortion on vocals on the PoB show due to the heavily-taxed soundboard, it only adds to the experience. Enjoy!

Pop. 1280: August 16, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I’d heard nothing but good things about Pop. 1280 since my NC buddy David Schwentker posted their Hopscotch Festival recording here from last year. It’s not just about the dark, synth-driven sound or the vocals that sound like the voice of the apocalypse. It’s about how they convert the sound of their excellent records, including this year’s Imps of Perversion on Sacred Bones, into a live show that, even in the late slot at Mercury Lounge, will wake you the hell up. The band tore through a short set of material that focused almost exclusively on Imps of Perversion, with one track from 2011’s The Horror making an appearance. Compared to the Hopscotch set, Pop. 1280’s sound has become even more refined and able to dominate a crowd, and we look forward to a longer engagement in the future.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for Mercury Lounge, with Schoeps MK41 microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from head engineer Kevin Mazzarelli. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Lonnie Holley: September 7, 2013 Paradise of Bachelors Day Show, Stephenson Amphitheatre (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The tiny new North Carolina imprint Paradise of Bachelors may only have a catalog ten LPs deep, but among their offerings have been many of my favorites of the past couple years. For the first time, PoB decided to throw their own day show during the Hopscotch Music Festival to show off collaborations among artists they work with as well as friends of the label. Unlike the festival’s other events, which took place in downtown Raleigh, this show was held among the green expanse of a lovely outdoor amphitheater that is part of the Raleigh Little Theater complex. The result was a bright day with some of the festival’s best music.

Lonnie Holley began the show almost in the style of an invocation, setting a mystical, reverent tone for the day. Best known as an artist and sculptor, Holley’s forays into music have attracted the attention of a variety of well-known players in the indie music world, from Bill Callahan and Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox to his co-collaborators elsewhere at Hopscotch such as Mac McCaughan, Brad Cook, and Steve Gunn. What exactly to call Holley’s music eludes me, to be honest, so take it away, Aquarium Drunkard (in a review of this year’s LP, Just Before Music):

Holley restrains himself from too much conventional musicality—melody and that sort of thing. There is scarcely a proper chord change in his music, much less a full progression. He sings with an intense, emotional voice and unleashes lyrics without consistent meter or rhyme over gossamer keyboard lines that hang in the ether. His music is a blues nebula, splotched with riffy word jazz that shares in some rappers’ collagist aesthetics as well as the runaway passion of a gospel preacher enlivened by the Spirit.

Holley’s album title says something about what he’s trying to tap into with his sound. His music isn’t “primitive”, but it is primal, intended to speak to the universality of the human experience. On this day, Holley came out alone onstage, with the buzzing of cicadas his quiet backdrop. These four songs each told a story, but perhaps the most passionate was “One Garden But Many Gardens”, Holley’s tribute to what he called “Mother Universe” and her “gumbo-ish manner”.  To fully get the metaphor, I recommend checking out the banter track, but out here, among nature, Holley’s words resonated powerfully. There couldn’t have been a better way for this day to begin./

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK4V microphones directly in front of the stage. This recording emphasizes the soundboard feed to capture the full range of the vocals. While it reveals both some wind noise and the limits of the simple PA setup, it is nonetheless a solid recording. Enjoy!

Marnie Stern: September 5, 2013 Lincoln Theatre, Raleigh, NC (Hopscotch Music Festival) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Normally when somebody plays finger-tapping guitar high up the neck the way that Marnie Stern does, the way that’s defined her sound, their style comes with a surfeit of leather and outdated machismo. Marnie Stern records for Pacific Northwest stalwarts Kill Rock Stars, and she’s reclaimed that technique for modern fans who’re as far away from the spandex-and-leather set as you can get. But for the boys down front in ironic headbands, leading between-song chants, there was nothing to worry about. Marnie’s got a sense of humor to go with the chops and the cred. This year’s The Chronicles of Marnia represented the apex-to-date of her career, and Marnie seems poised to take full advantage.

This Lincoln Theatre show, on the kickoff night of the Hopscotch Music Festival, gave Marnie a big-enough stage to let her rip, without compromising the intimacy of her personality or her performance. She may have begun with a hilariously off-color joke about getting older, but Marnie’s sound is as youthful and energetic as it was on her first record, In Advance of the Broken Arm, six years ago.

Marnie wasn’t even the headliner (that went to Kurt Vile), but she brought out a packed house that howled loudly for the favorites and even started a mosh pit. Marnie exudes energy and charisma of a kind that doesn’t require a larger band to do it. After delivering some of Chronicles of Marnia’s strongest numbers, plus older songs, she and the band closed out the show with a long-form rendition of “The Crippled Jazzer”, at more than twice the length of the other songs. Bonus points to bassist Nithin Kalvakota for playing along gamely to the hooker jokes throughout the night!

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones from the ideal location in the venue. While I felt the vocals were a tad high in the house mix at times, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Mac DeMarco: August 31, 2013 Captured Tracks CT5 – Flac/MP3/Streaming

If he is perhaps the least Captured Tracks-sounding band on the label, Mac DeMarco is certainly one of its most entertaining acts. On the first day of the Captured Tracks Festival (“CT5“) to celebrate the five years that this excellent label has released albums, one of its most successful artists delivered the performance of the day. Mac is certainly talented — his songs are tight and well written and his band is proficient. But the material is enhanced by the performer’s personality, his sense of humor, and his willingness to take chances. As when we saw Mac at Webster in February, one of the highlights of any Mac DeMarco set is when the band lets loose and runs through a semi-tongue in cheek set of classic rock covers. On this night, the improv section did not disappoint and gave us a few belly laughs along the way.

I recorded this set with the Neumann large diaphragm cards mounted high in front of the soundboard cage and mixed with a feed from the board. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Julia Weldon: July 19, 2013 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The physical copies of Julia Weldon’s new CD Light is a Ghost arrived in her manager/brother’s office on the afternoon of her CD release show last Friday. This serendipitous bit of fortune carried over into the celebratory feeling of her show at the Knitting Factory that night and also allowed us to snag a copy for multiple plays over the weekend. The CD is really everything we could have hoped for from this tremendous artist. The material is well-paced and highlights her many talents — strong voice, deep sense of melody, insightful lyrics and a keen sense of humor. Whether its this CD or her next, Julia Weldon is an artist destined for big things, and we are fortunate to be able to hitch onto her ride early on. The show at the Knit was also a family affair. Besides her brother (and manager), both of Julia’s parents (thanks on the CD) were there for support. In her bio, Julia notes that she came out at 12, and while we’re not privy (nor should we be) to the details of her parent’s reaction, its safe these days to assume that they are completely supportive. This is perhaps why her music is almost “post-gay”, that is to say that her songs don’t focus or even really touch on the struggle with phobias and acceptance. The lyrics treat her sexuality unselfconsciously and as a matter-of-fact — and that’s both empowering and refreshing. At the Knit, Julia and her band worked through the complete album, with a bonus song as encore. We are streaming “Icarus”, which was perhaps the most fully realized performance on a night when each number shined throughout.

Julia Weldon is touring for a half dozen dates in the South and Midwest before returning to NYC in September.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed from house soundman Rob, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!
