Surfer Blood made a quite a splash this past week at CMJ. From the very first afternoon at the packed-to-the-rafters Pop Tarts show at Cake Shop, all the way through about a dozen shows in the week, Surfer Blood attracted loads of attention to their infectious garage/surf-rock. On Saturday, they played the very first set of the Showpaper/ToddP/Pitchfork benefit at Market Hotel early in the afternoon. Although their set was merely a tease — clocking in at eighteen minutes — Surfer Blood performed long enough to substantiate the praise and raise expectations for the January release of their debut album Astro Coast.
This set was recorded under the same conditions at the Real Estate set, except that the soundboard feed signal did not begin until about two minutes into the set. The mix is rough, but quite listenable. Enjoy!

Hi,
Can you please take this link down for the Surfer Blood “Astro Coast” album. It is up illegally on your site. You are hurting the band’s chances of getting more promotion by having the whole album up illegally for
download on your site. We are not a major label so having it up for free on the web really hurts our chances of helping the band to become bigger.
We would appreciate if you would remove it before we have to take any legal action.
Thanks,
Lio

Read more closely. This isn’t the album. This is an authorized live recording made at the behest of Pitchfork. One of the purposes of this post is to HELP the band sell the record when it comes out by linking to your site.
It might be a good idea to read what’s actually posted before threatening legal action.
kanine records needs to download some hooked on phonics
Hmmm, this same sort of thing happened to me earlier this year with another band. (don’t bother to read what’s posted, send threatening e-mail) However, it was followed up with an immediate apology for their confusion, but that along with other issues hasn’t made me want to record them since. Oh well. (they should have at least privately e-mailed you instead of posting a public comment though)
Nice going Lio @ Kanine Records (said with all the sarcasm I could muster up).
Thanks for the info, Recording LA (great site, too!). I am 100% certain that this didn’t come from the band, however, as their manager had an active role in providing the proper setlist to this site and to Pitchfork. Surfer Blood is an excellent band with a real future, and any silliness that comes from their current record company has no effect on my positive opinion of the band.
Ughhh that guy is the worst!!!
Thanks. :) Whoops, I should have clarified that I was contacted by someone from their label after I posted the show. (again, he immediately retracted the 1st e-mail, but I wasn’t thrilled regardless)
The band in question, well – while they are good, seem to be a bit “hands off” with anything online beyond myspace. I gave them a couple recordings, they seemed receptive, so I tried to converse further about it, but they didn’t respond. Sent them another one, but, again, no response, so I haven’t recorded them since. Again, oh well.
So I did receive an apology email from another person at Kanine Records this weekend. The album has been leaked elsewhere, which does suck, and this site was unfortunately lumped into the mass email campaign to get the leaks removed.
