Its not easy to trek up to Portchester for three straight nights for three-hour concerts in the middle of the work week. But this is Wilco and they ultimately make it infinitely worth all of the travel and sleep deprivation. The three shows at the Capitol Theatre were also special for their own unique reason — its Wilco’s 20th Anniversary as a band and they are revisiting literally the entire catalog on this tour. Each of the three nights offered a completely different song selection (with only one repeat all week) so that we experienced nearly one-hundred different Wilco songs during these shows. Wednesday’s show was perhaps the strongest of the three and on this night there were multiple deep cuts including songs I haven’t heard in years (Being There‘s “Hotel Arizona” and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot‘s “Radio Cure” were two) and a couple that I’ve never seen played live in the dozens of live Wilco experiences. But for me the one standout track was the Wilco “white whale” (Johnny FCB’s description) — the first and only lead vocal track by bassist John Stirratt “Its Just That Simple” from the band’s first album AM. John totally nailed this song and it was also tremendous to hear the crowd’s enthusiastic response to Wilco’s only other remaining original member’s chance under the spotlight. I am streaming that performance below, along with the semi-rare “Airline to Heaven”.
Our recordings from this night are also probably our best of the week. The crowd issues were prevalent throughout the week but on this night the area around our microphones was not too bad. I utilized the Schoeps cardioids pointed directly at the stacks from the front right corner of the soundboard cage. Our pole was also raised to the maximum allowable height at this venue. Acidjack recorded from the same pole with a different model of Schoeps cards. Both recordings very accurately reflect the superb room mix by Wilco’s legendary FOH Stan Doty. Enjoy!
The first night’s recording is here, the final night will be posted next.

Thanks for taping and sharing these.
I love Its Just That Simple – last time Wilco played Vicar St in Dublin they performed it too and I was there to hear it.
Good lord, I wish the crowd would SHUT THE F UP during songs. Jeff addressed it on Thursday but the idiots only quieted down for a song or two.
I was at this show, sitting at the back of the floor with my buddy who was in a cast on his lower leg. It stunned me how much the crowd kept talking. Treated the show as if Wilco was performing in their frat basement. Shameful. Disrespectful to the other audience members as well as the band.
Crowd noise was an issue at all 3 of these shows, but it’s also partially the reason why i enjoy that Wilco typically do outdoor shows in NYC, having a back bar area seems to attract people who love to talk.
That being said, all three of these shows were excellent, and these recordings are as great as i could imagine them being. Thanks as always!
Damn fellas, not one but two captures to choose from. My hats off to you boys for making the trek and depriving yourself of that glorious sleep. Seeing how I had a case of the work week blues & the wife/book keeper said “NO FUCKING WAY”, this was the only night I made the hike. I had a nice comfy seat center front of the balcony were the crowd noise was none existent. The ‘white whale’ made it for me, your capture on Soundcloud sounds great. Look forward to hearing it through the Harmon/Kardon. Thanks again for sharing all of efforts.
Any chance you guys r going to Mercury tonight for Benjamin Booker??
