Ryley Walker offers plenty of reasons to see him any chance you can.  His guitar playing ranges from intricate to brain bending, his songwriting is constantly evolving in creative ways and his stage banter is always great. His willingness  to chase creativity and always try something new keeps me coming back.  As he said at the beginning of the night, “We play Avant Garde music!”

The set was billed as the Ryley Walker/JR Bohannon Duo but we were lucky enough to have Ryan Jewel (complete with “Jazz Machine” t-shirt) join for 2 of the 3 improvisational pieces.  The first piece is a beautiful excursion into blissed out guitar and pedal steel zones and Ryan adding drums and percussion to the remaining two.  A case point for seeing music that sits at the edges of rhythm and melody can be found around the ninth minute of the last piece.  From seemingly nowhere they find a groove so sharp Slint would be jealous.  They ride that just long enough to let you know they recognized it and then immediately push past; audience and band both in search of what’s next.

I’ve been reading and following the NYCTaper site as a fan for many years but my first actual contribution was a little over a year ago when AcidJack and I recorded Ryley with the “Course In Fable” band at Tubby’s.  It was a nice little anniversary for me to be able to record this set from my usual perch in the back of the room by the sound board.  To really tie the anniversary theme together, I used a set of MBHO 603A/KA200 mics and a clamp borrowed from AcidJack. Tubby’s excellent FOH engineer Will provided the board patch. Enjoy!

Oh, what a night. This was seventy minutes of pure improvisational bliss. These four incredibly talented musicians have played together before in various combinations, but never as a quartet. Ryan Jewell should be familiar with the readers of these pages in his many outings with Chris Forsyth and with Ryley Walker, and a few months back we posted a five-piece improv set that featured Stuart Bogie and Jonathan Goldberger. Andy Hess has only appeared here with Govt Mule (2007), but has played with a plethora of area musicians over the years.

On this night, the quartet performed an unrehearsed improvisation set that extended to almost an hour before starting another shorter piece as an encore of sorts. Generally speaking, these types of events lean towards the avant and noisy side, but these four folks naturally seemed to be able to instantaneously conjure up chunky nuggets of melody interspersed with tasty bits of effects, some quiet interludes, and some squonk. Ultimately, this was an exceptionally satisfying night of music, and one that I hope gets repeated again.

I recorded this set with a pair of Schoeps mounted at the front of the stage, and mixed with a board feed. The onstage recording was so crystal clear so that the board mix is only used as some fortification and also to soften the hard pans of the stage capture. The mix is superb. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker’s March residency at Union Pool covered all the bases of Walker’s sound, from relatively “straight-ahead” song-based performances to instrumental blowouts with friends and colleagues like Ryan Jewell and Steve Gunn. Count this final night’s performance firmly in the latter camp, as Walker and residency mainstay Jewell were joined by David Grubbs (Gastr del Sol, others) and C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) for a full set of avant-garde experimentation that found Walker stepping away from the mic but fully present as guitarist and spiritual force.

Over the course of these residency shows (plus bonus Queens show), I’ve said my piece about Ryley Walker and “who” he is musically, so I won’t belabor the point. Suffice it to say that even if you follow all things Walker, this unique collaboration is a standout, something not likely to be repeated. Walker made it known what an honor it was for him to play with these musicians. It was equally our honor to have heard it.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other Union Pool shows, with Doug Graham’s outstanding house mix leading the way. Enjoy!

Making music is an act of generosity — the sharing of your inner self with a public that may or may not appreciate or understand it. The music in the world that is great is also the music in which the artist is most honest with her/himself. Honesty often means getting close to the dark places inside you.

Ryley Walker’s music has always embodied a certain conflict. When Walker takes a fairly straightforward folk-rock album track and turns it into a live 15-minute jazz-psych freakout, I don’t think the change is just about the “freedom” of the live setting or a fundamental dislike of the album track. Maybe that’s part of it, but I see a contest of impulses — to be a commercially approachable troubadour or the more esoteric, improvisational player he’s been since his career began. Do you want to be the guy who wears British tailoring in leafy photo shoots, or do you want to be the guy who uses his trio show with Ryan Jewell and Steve Gunn to play 50 minutes of psych jams? Walker is both of those things — he’s good at being both of those things — but one gets the sense that he isn’t totally comfortable living solely as either. I get it: A lot of us want to be more than our headline.

There’s a well-known paradox of the “sad clown” — that people who are funny are often people who aren’t happy. Anyone who has caught Ryley live or read him in Vice or reads his Twitter knows that he is certainly the former: he can be very, very funny. Listen to his lyrics as sung, and you might be surprised: Most of Walker’s songs are varying degrees of melancholic. Even a whimsical-sounding tune like “Summer Dress,” if you listen to his delivery, is more anxious than it seems: for a person with a belly full of wine singing about green pastures of desire, the narrator sounds ill at ease. The song is especially vivid for me because it’s the first one I ever heard Ryley Walker play. That very first song lacerated me; I believed the voice I heard.

Generosity. It’s sharing those darkest places in yourself, but it’s also playing a huge fan’s birthday party at Trans-Pecos in the middle of the day, even though you’ve got another show in town that Tuesday (which ends up being a jaw-dropping improv set with Jewell, David Grubbs, and C. Spencer Yeh—check back here soon). This set (a duo of Walker and Jewell) encapsulated all of the different sides of Ryley Walker at once — from his best-known song (and total live jammer) “The Roundabout” to the not-often-played-anymore “Summer Dress,” to the ending jam, which hews closer to his most recent Union Pool shows — and also kills.

That Walker puts his conflicts out there for everyone to see is not a flaw, nor is one choice he makes more true or “real” than another. They’re who and what he is — honest to the point of ache, always pushing to be something more. The late 2010s don’t feel like a moment for generous spirits, but you don’t choose when you’re born, anymore than you choose to whom, or where. Yet here he is: a generous spirit, one for whom, on this particular day, I was especially grateful.

Ryley Walker, Steve Gunn & Ryan Jewell Trio: March 5, 2019 Union Pool

Ryley Walker led off his March 2019 Union Pool residency with a shot of his usual self-deprecating humor, telling us he just got dumped and that this was his first show as a New Yorker (he’s lived here for months and performed quite a few sets here since). For those of us who’ve followed his career for the past five-plus years, we knew at least one thing to expect next: Ryley’s music is as serious as his stage persona is flippant.

Still, that couldn’t quite prepare us for the trio set with Steve Gunn and Ryan Jewell that followed. This trio could have done any number of things well, but what we ended up with reminded me tonally of Gunn’s collaborations with the drummer John Truscinski — with a hundred percent more guitar. Over the course of this 50 minute improvisational piece (titled by yours truly given the lack of a given one), I was struck by how, in the right hands, an instrument can be a person’s voice. Take Walker at his word — or put yourselves in the shoes of almost anyone who first moves to NYC from their hometown — and you knew what kind of energy he was working with: frenetic, exuberant and relentless. He played like a person aching to be seen, announcing themselves in an unfamiliar place. It wasn’t his first show as a New Yorker, but it might be the first one with that alchemical mix of awe, anxiety and urgency that turns you into the kind of person who belongs here.

Gunn’s trademark guitar tone undergirds the entire piece, a beacon for what’s to come. There’s a sweetness and calm to even Gunn’s noisiest work that’s of a piece to his own stage persona: confident but laid-back about it, extraordinary without overreaching. Like his recent guest appearance with William Tyler, this collaboration with Walker made for an incredible combination of peer guitarists operating at their creative and artistic peaks (not to say they won’t enjoy more). Likewise the conservatory-trained Jewell, an almost-constant among Ryley’s touring bandmates, who comes in and out of the foreground of this extended improv at the right moments, adding drone-style percussion at critical ebbs in the volume.

From his noise roots to his folk-leaning earlier albums to his wholly-new current material, Walker proves over and over that he refuses not to stretch himself artistically. It was hard to take photos of this show. You could get a clear shot of Steve, eyeing Ryley from stage left. But Ryley Walker, he was a blur, especially at this piece’s final, ecstatic climax. Like a true New Yorker, he never stops moving.

I recorded this set with a flawless feed from Union Pool’s engineer Doug Graham, together with Schoeps MK5 microphones at the soundboard. The quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Our coverage of the 2023 Deep In The Valley festival continues! 

Today we have site favorites Garcia Peoples set. Unfortunately, Danny (Guitar, Vocals) and Cesar (Drums) were unable to make it. Thankfully a friend of the band, Ryan Jewell, was on hand to play with Ryley Walker and was able to sit in. With this unique line-up, the band treated us to a single 30+ minute piece of improvisation. 

Launching into free improv isn’t something new for Garcia Peoples. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things about them. They are so comfortable with it that I often don’t know if it’s truly improv or a new song they are working on. It’s honestly embarrassing how many times I’ve had to go up to Tom or Andy after a set and ask if something they did was song I don’t know or just jam. Spoiler alert; it’s almost always a jam.

I recorded this with my MBHO cards at stage lip and very nice board feed from FOH engineer Daniel Stout. The quality is excellent!

Ryley Walker: August 19, 2023 Deep in the Valley

Welcome to our coverage of Deep in the Valley 2023! The second year of our favorite Hudson Valley fest was again held at beautiful From the Ground Brewery in Red Hook, NY and hosted by our friends at Raven Sings the Blues. Thanks to everyone involved for their hospitality. I can’t wait to see you there next year. In the meantime, relax and enjoy some tunes from the day…

First off here’s the day’s headliner Ryley Walker, playing in duo configuration with Ryan Jewell. While not quite full-band, seeing Ryley and Ryan together is always magical and this performance doesn’t disappoint in the least. Ryley-classics “The Halfwit in Me” and “The Roundabout” take center stage here with the jams and detours we love from these songs. I’m a massive fan of Course in Fable and consider it Ryley’s finest, so I was glad to hear “Rang Dizzy” from that one. The last song is an instrumental which I’m sure has a title that is escaping me. Listening back I almost feel like I’m in a field in Red Hook, New York with some apple trees off to the side. This one’s the highlight of a nearly perfect day.

I recorded this with the MBHO omnis at the stage lip, combined with a board feed courtesy of engineer Daniel Stout. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: April 23, 2023 Union Pool

It’s hard to remember the last time I saw Chris Forsyth and crew tear it up. Before the pandemic? Time blurs! I do know that this was my first in-person experience of the most recent Solar Motel Band lineup with Tom Malach (Garcia Peoples) on guitar, Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback, etc.) on bass, and of course Ryan Jewell, who somehow manages to be everywhere at once, on drums. This set is mostly songs off of Forsyth’s latest burner, Evolution Here We Come, including the Richard and Linda Thompson song “You’re Going to Need Somebody.” Forsyth is ever-reliable in his choice of covers, here capping off the night (and not to mention the triple-threat Garcia Peoples/Purling Hiss/Motel Band tour) with his take on Neil Young’s “Powderfinger.” But it’s the Evolution-closer “Robot Energy Machine” that really let’s the group stretch out, McCombs and Jewell providing the motorik backing rhythms for Forsyth and Malach to trade lines over. Maybe next tour Forsyth and co. will be doing a Neu! cover. You never know!

Chris Forsyth: October 28, 2022 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

A little over a year ago Chris Forsyth made his first post-Covid appearance backed by Tom Malach (Garcia Peoples), Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback) and Ryan Jewel (everyone). This show was well documented by or own NYCtaper. In his write up he mentioned that the new material emerged feeling fully realized and noted the bands immediate chemistry. Time has proven him right.

With the release of Forsyth’s new album, Evolution Here We Come, we are able to see the full vision Chris had for this ensemble and these songs. The core band of Chris, Tom, Doug and Ryan are augmented by a host of cosmic and psychedelic warriors including Steve Wynn, Bill Nace and Marshall Allen (!!!!) with the final results all massaged into place by Dave Harrington.

On this night the band operated as a power trio. While Tom’s additions were missed, it’s exciting to see how much space Chris is able to cover on his own. The band sounded amazing, taking flight immediately and working through a majority of the new material. The set closer, Robot Energy Machine, featured Charlie Saufley (Heron Oblivion) on guitar and offered nearly 20 minutes of wide eared improvisation to digest.

Chris is currently wrapping up a co-headlining tour with Meg Baird. Hopefully you got a chance to catch a set, but if not we’ve got you covered! I recorded this from the back of the room with my MBHOs and board patch from Tubby’s FOH engineer, Brian. Enjoy!

Jeffrey Alexander and the Heavy Lidders: August 20, 2022 Deep in the Valley

Welcome to our coverage of the 2022 Deep in the Valley festival and special deep valley thanks to Raven Sings the Blues and From the Ground Brewery for hosting!

They didn’t kick off the festival but kicking off our coverage of Deep in the Valley is this astounding set from Jeffrey Alexander and the Heavy Lidders. We’re big fans of course of his other band, Dire Wolves, but this is the first time we’ve gotten to see him with the Heavy Lidders. The group includes Elkhorn-ers Drew Gardner on guitar and Jesse Shepherd on bass, Scott Verrastro of Kohoutek on drums, and a guest appearance from Ashley Paul on saxophone. Opening with the loose, Tolkien-referencing “Bombadil Bop” couldn’t have been more appropriate for the pastoral setting as folks got up out of their chairs to boogie, while others sought umbrellas as the midday heat came out in full force. The band slides further into the literary references with “Beowulf’s Trip” from the ‘Lidders recent self-titled LP featuring the same lineup that we saw at Deep in the Valley. (Heads take note: that record also boasts appearances from Marissa Nadler on the Dead’s “Black Peter,” Rosali Middleman, PG Six, and Ryan Jewell. Wow!) After playing her own solo set, Ashley Paul joined in on saxophone for “Hidden Treasure.” She and Jeffrey Alexander collaborated remotely last year and released a super limited 7″—nice to see them jamming in person. Finally the band choogles into their deepest grooves of the day with Willie Dixon’s classic “Spoonful,” which they also put out on Elixer of Life. Their set was truly a physical manifestation of the good vibes and collaborative atmosphere at Deep in the Valley and I hope you enjoy this as much as we all did—get into it below!
