Jon Langford, Jean Cook and Walter Salas-Humara: December 17, 2016 – Private Residence in Brooklyn

In a bookend to his February 2016 acoustic gig/art show at a private apartment in Brooklyn, Jon Langford closed out the year with another performance at the same venue. This time he brought along not just his guitar and violnist/vocalist extraordinaire Jean Cook (plus lots of his inimitable paintings and prints, which did a brisk business), but also Silos cofounder Walter Salas-Humara. The pair of country-punk pioneers swapped songs while adding guitar and improvised percussion to each other’s songs — on one track Langford started out drumming with brushes on his guitar back, before breaking for a drum solo played on his own butt — perfectly melding Langford’s sardonic tales of blasé drone operators and Irish fishing villages still reliving the decades-only filming of Moby Dick with Salas-Humara’s ballads of pot smuggling and doomed romance. It was as stripped down as punk rock, or music in general, can be, and further cemented Langford’s role as one of the world’s most seriously funny, and comically serious, artists, while providing a welcome reminder that really all that’s needed for great music are a couple of instruments and an appreciative crowd willing to join in on the choruses.

As with the February show, there was no amplification, so this was recorded with the same CA-14 cardioid mics (mounted on a stand this time instead of sitting on the floor, as the space was slightly less cheek to jowl); when it sounds like the performers have wandered off into another part of the room at one point, that’s exactly what’s happened. Thanks to Jon and Walter and Jean, and to Jon Raaen for hosting us all again at his apartment. Next time, with less snow on the ground for once!

I believe its safe to say that at this point The Hum music series has been an unqualified success. The concept was a unique one — place together various female performers from diverse backgrounds and let them make music. But in practice, it has become so much more than that. The results of these performances have created friendships, bonds, working relationships and as we’ve experienced live, absolutely breathtaking musical accomplishments. In the Spring, we attended and recorded all four of the sessions at the Manhattan Inn. This Fall, various commitments prevented us from attending all but one of the nights. But fortunately, the night we attended was a superb presentation and contained what for me is the most compelling performance of the entire series — the duo between uber-guitarist Kaki King and supreme percussionist Kiran Gandhi.

We were familiar with Kaki King, most notably from her supporting slot on the 2008 Mountain Goats tour. But her career has spanned more than a decade and includes eight albums. In the recent past she has released instrumental (Glow) and multi-media pieces (The Neck Is The Bridge To The Body) and that format gave a nice backdrop to this Hum show. Our only familiarity with Kiran Gandhi was that she was the drummer on recent M.I.A. tours — but a little of bit of research revealed that Kiran is truly a remarkable human being. She has toured internationally with M.I.A. and Thievery Corporation while simultaneously achieving an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. She has her own TED Talk, is a mathematics genius, oh and yeah, ran the London Marathon — all by the age of 25.

The set begins with Kiran’s sincere thanks to the Hum and to its founder Rachael Pazdan. As Kaki began the opening riff, the duo flowed effortlessly into what we believe is an original composition for this night, a track titled with both performers’ last names. Thematically, the opening number is similar to the songs that followed which include two numbers from Kaki King’s recent albums (Glow and The Neck). “Wazey” is a Madame Ghandi song that became the centerpiece for the set when Kiran involved the very willing crowd over whom she harmonized a coda to the song. It was a moment that truly captures the sense of discovery and community that The Hum has created and brought and end to this installment of the series with a very appropriate close. The Hum will return, likely in early 2016.

I recorded this set as we did the Spring, with Sennheiser cardioid microphones mounted on stage and mixed a board feed. The sound quality of this particular recording is quite remarkable, as the instruments are clear and panned in the appropriate layout of the room. Enjoy!

The fourth and final week of the Hum Residency at Manhattan Inn was in many respects a fitting close to this excellent and unique concert series. The crowd for this night was the largest of the entire series and the music was as superb as expected. Jen Goma (A Sunny Day in Glasgow) returned from last week, but this time in a trio with Cassandra Jenkins and Caroline Davis from Maitri. The trio began the night with a cold start of an acapella number that quickly quieted the crowd before Rachael from Hypnocraft introduced the artists. The first set was truly a remarkable display of three-part harmonies and collaborative songcraft from three outstanding artists. For the second set, we were again treated to music from Cat Martino, who has appeared many times on the pages of this website, this time with the multi-talented Erin Fein from Psychic Twin. This set was a five song affair that consisted of alternate numbers from the two protagonists that featured ethereal vocals and keys and effects that worked well in unison. The final song was a moving and poignant solo number on the house piano by Cat Martino that was striking not only for the beauty of her voice but the raw emotion it conveyed. The final set paired the indescribable artistry of Xenia Rubinos with the guitar masterwork of Indigo Street. The trio was joined by multi-instrumentalist and avant jazz performer Shahzad Ismaily on drums. This grouping was perhaps the most inspired mix of talents of the entire four-week series. Xenia’s ability to create compositions from whole cloth was on display as the set consisted primarily of improvised material. This format also suited the talents of Indigo Street as her guitar work, even in the improvised segments, was precise and entirely on point. The evening and the series were served well by this incredibly strong closing set and we could not be more pleased to have captured it, and every note of the month-long event.

I recorded this night in the same manner as the previous week’s sets — with microphones set up within the area of the music and mixed with a board feed consisting primarily of vocals. This week I used the Sennheiser cards on the floor. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Hum Residency: April 20, 2015 Manhattan Inn – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The third week of the Hypnocraft-presented Hum Residency at Manhattan Inn was my own personal first experience with this extraordinary mesh of talents and it was a terrific night. The first set was scheduled to be a duo with our old friend Alyse Lamb from EULA with Alex Nelson of Oracle Room but the group became a trio with the addition of Pamela Martinez (of Teletextile), a veteran of the first week of Hum, on percussion, keys and effects. Their set was a shared group of songs that neither protagonist has ever performed live before, and for Alyse the material was more aligned to her solo project Parlor Walls (who we recorded last year) than to the hard-driving post-punk of EULA.

The second set was performed by another old friend, Jen Goma of A Sunny Day in Glasgow, who has previously appeared on NYCTaper a couple of times. She was joined by Teeny Lieberson (TEEN) and Zoe Brecher (Brainfreeze) for a set that primarily was fueled by dual keyboards and drums until Jen strapped on the strat for the final number. Overall, this trio’s collaborative effort was reminiscent of the synth-driven pop of the aughts but with stunningly precise harmonies.

The final set of the night was a full-on party, which is what we’d expect from a quartet that includes Rubblebucket‘s Kalmia Traver, but which was a true collaboration that also featured Sarah Pedinotti (LIP TALK), Kaila Mullady (champion beat boxer) and Jordyn Blakely (Invisible Familiars). This set included songs written and arranged by all four participants and was a mix of funk and electronica with some amazing harmonies, and also featuring nice bits of baritone sax, beats and some sweet guitar licks. The final song had the whole crowd standing and grooving and ended this fine night in very entertaining fashion.

I recorded this show with the Neumann large diaphragm cardioid microphones on the floor in the center of the performers and mixed with a soundboard feed which provided primarily vocals. The mix of the two sources provided an excellent balance and the sound quality is superb for all three sets. Enjoy!

If you caught last week’s post about week one of the Hum Residency, you already know the deal — Hypnocraft Presents brings us a monthlong, Monday night series held at the Manhattan Inn in Greenpoint, featuring musical collaborations among a diverse range of predominantly women artists, together with live projections. By design, the events have a spontaneous, free-flowing feel to them, with the artists wedged in around the centerpiece of the restaurant’s back room, a large white piano, used intermittently by the bands. Surrounding the artist on all sides are the fans, unsure of exactly what to expect, but knowing it should be something interesting and important.

The second week’s lineup was especially diverse, featuring songwriter Deli & Ashley Jackson on harp, the violist and singer Hannah Epperson, folk pop from Elizabeth & the Catapult, and an abstract guitar performance from Indigo Street of Shy Hunters and Shelley Burgon on harp, all of it backed by lush projections by Sofy Yuditskaya.

Ashley Jackson began with two solo harp pieces, the second a fascinating version of Angelica Negron’s “Technicolor” with loops added in. Jackson was then joined by singer-songwriter Deli Neblett. Deli, of Nashville, began her very first New York show (!) with a set of guitar songs that felt even more delicate when backed by Jackson’s harp, as Neblett’s voice looped in the background to provide a ghostly ambiance to her arrangements. Her songs have a stylistic daring to them that sets her apart from her peers; the phrasing in “Boating” is hers and hers alone. “Grown Again” may remind you a little of Grouper, but it has a more organic sensibility than her work, despite the loops. Neblett’s future NYC shows should be worth a look.

Violinist and vocalist Hannah Epperson felt in command of the situation from the get-go, promising to tame her usual volubility. I’d have been happy to hear her talk more, personally, but her playing belonged as the highlight. Of her two songs, the expressive “Farthest Distance Apart” really nailed it for me, with Epperson’s vocals about the transient nature of attention in modern society sure to hit home with most of us.

Then came time for Elizabeth & the Catapult (in this case, the “Catapult” was guitarist/vocalist Chris Cubeta), who let loose with a rollicking, devil-may care kind of a set that found Elizabeth moving between the piano and wandering the stage with her guitar, joining her musical partner for vocals on “Go Away My Lover”, which we first experienced at Elizabeth’s Backyard Brunch Session a couple years ago. Here, Elizabeth sounded more forceful and assured than ever, earning plaudits as well as some deserved laughs for both her all-too-recognizable lyrics about relationships and her equally-deserved hate for hashtagging. Elizabeth & the Catapult’s set was so on point, in fact, that she even got an “encore” of sorts, turning her song “More Than Enough” into a crowd singalong.

Perhaps the evening’s most surprising set came from Indigo Street and Shelley Burgon, who closed things down with an intense set of ambient instrumental music that created the perfect vibe for ending the night. Their choices — Burgon’s “Time Between Times Variation Three” and the theme from “To Kill A Mockingbird” — were cerebral, cinematic numbers that were a joy to see being created. They truly created the sort of “hum” this event is about, a warming of the heart, brain and soul, an oasis of reflection capable of taking place even in a crowded bar. It was something special.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed together with Audio Technica 4051 cardiod microphones up close on the performers. While some ambient noise can be heard from the crowded bar up front, as well as bits of DI hum here and there, overall the sound quality of the sets is quite good. Enjoy!

The Hum Residency: April 06, 2015 Manhattan Inn – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Hum Residency is a collection of over 30 artists collaborating at Greenpoint’s Manhattan Inn every Monday night in April. In the evening, Manhattan Inn is a bar and restaurant featuring a baby grand piano and rotating pianist in a lovely candle lit room in the back. After 10pm, the space is transformed into a concert venue, tables on the floor quickly whisked away while dinner patrons sitting in custom-made wooden booths, dessert plates and the check in front of them, prepare to enjoy a special evening of music in what will be a standing-room only crowd.

Each Monday night features three sets of collaborating artists and for the first act of this night, Brooklyn’s Teletextile and Belle Mare huddled around the house piano. Teletextile is no stranger to intimate sets as we previously featured them for an indoor Backyard Brunch session in 2011 and both bands delivered an equally good performance.

For the second act, Renata Zeiguer of Cantina and Cassandra Jenkins shared the floor creating a seven piece ensemble complete with drum kit. The floor was impassable, cables and guitar peddles covering every last inch of available space on the floor, and the artists were literally surrounding my microphones.

The final act was the powerful duet of Shilpa Ray amd Deva Mahal. Shilpa is releasing a new album called Last Year’s Savage on May 19, 2015 (Northern Spy Records), and she’ll be playing a record release show at Rough Trade on May 23rd.

I recorded this unique set using a pair of Schoeps MK4 Cardioid microphones on-stage in the a classic ORTF setup which was re-positioned for each artist. The audience recording was mixed with a soundboard feed provided by Manhattan Inn’s Engineer John. The audience was incredibly respectful during this intimate set and the results are outstanding. The Human Eyes: September 6, 2012 DiggUp Tapes Day Show at Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

One of the many pleasures of heading down to Raleigh, NC for this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival was the chance to see regional bands that aren’t as readily available to see in New York. The Human Eyes were touted to me early on as a local favorite, and I can see why. At this DiggUp tapes day show at King’s in downtown Raleigh, the band gave a crowd of current fans and newcomers like me a 40-minute set consisting of much of their still-fresh May 2012 debut release, Guiding Eyes for the Blind.  With shimmering guitars and a dream pop  sensibility to their sound, the band was instantly approachable. After leading off with the uptempo “Born To Die”, I appreciated the band’s willingness to slow the pace a few songs later with the lovestruck “I Am Gone”. Similarly, the melancholy “Let Me In” was the right way to cue up the biggest, catchiest rocker of the set, “It’s Not the Same Without You”. This Chapel Hill, NC band is still in its infancy, but based on the enthusiasm I heard from local fans, I think we may be seeing more of them outside of their home region.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the excellent King’s staff and a pair of AKG 460 cardiod microphones installed by the local taper Bryon S. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

It’s one thing to be unaware of an amazing live act for far too long; it’s another for them to be from your own backyard and to be totally clueless about them until they’re opening for an established band at Bowery Ballroom.  But such is the truth of my discovery of Brooklyn’s Superhuman Happiness, and I’m happy to say I’m glad I made my way to them eventually, even if I arrived late to the party.

Like the band they were opening for, Superhuman Happiness utilize a large crew of players that includes multiple percussionists and brass flourishes (founder Stuart Bogie also does time as saxophonist for Antibalas).  Superhuman Happiness specialize in an upbeat, tribal style of dance music that calls to mind acts like !!!, with a penchant for the type of catchy polyrhythms that could as easily be at home on a DFA release (especially the set opener, “See Me On My Way”).  The band’s vocal approach trends mellower than those acts, and less self-referential; Superhuman Happiness, as the name may imply, are an unironically happy band, and being in their crowd, it’s hard not to feel a lightness in your step yourself.  They encourage the crowd to open a number of songs with clapping (check out “Our Favorite Part”, below), amping up the sense of celebration.

I’m told that this set was a bit less on the improvisational side for a Superhuman Happiness gig, given the limited set time, but the band nevertheless took plenty of liberties with song structure, as on the extended meditation during “Hounds”.   But with a musical pedigree among the bandmembers as diverse as Foals, TV on the Radio, Phenomenal Handclap Band, the Roots, Passion Pit, Antibalas and Holly Miranda, to name a few, these guys prove that they aren’t just a bunch of music majors noodling it out – they’ve got plenty of chops in more straight-ahead styles as well.

Right now, you can catch Superhuman Happiness at less expensive (as they commented from stage) venues around the city like Union Pool and Pianos; sure, they’ll also dominate Brooklyn Bowl one day (their sound is almost tailor-made for that venue), but why wait?

I recorded this set with a combination of Schoeps MK22 “open cardioid” mics and MK41 supercardiod mics for a recording of excellent focus and balance.  Enjoy!

OPTO S: February 9, 2024 Rubulad

Brooklyn’s OPTO S remind me of filthy subway cars, John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, and streets at nighttime shiny with recent rainfall. Musically, they sound indebted to Suicide and the No Wave bands of the early 80s. Which is appropriate considering their name refers MTA subway nomenclature specifying a type of train operation—they’re a New York band through and through.

We caught OPTO S earlier this month opening for the mighty Oneida at Bushwick venue Rubulad. The band are no strangers to live recordings, having released Human Indictive / Live on ESP Disk (also available on vinyl at Forced Exposure), recorded before the pandemic but released as things shut down. A few years later now, the band are playing some promising new material, including “Dead Skunk,” “Lucy 2,” and “Going Down the Wrong Path.” You heard them here first! Meanwhile, the band is in the midst of doing some live dates. Catch them soon in Philadelphia on March 1st at Century Bar and back in NYC on March 29th at Berlin. Check their Facebook for details.

Sky Furrows: February 9, 2024 Rubulad

Sky Furrows is the meeting of Albany’s Burnt Hills and writer-poet Karen Schoemer. They sound something like Sonic Youth, Slint, and Kinski in a blender—psych- and post-rock instrumentals buffeted by Schoemer’s sung-shouted intonations. While Phil Donnelly (drums), Mike Griffin (guitar), and Eric Hardiman (bass) keep a tight rhythm section, Schoemer recites stories, dreams, and observations. From “Shopping Bags,” off of Reflect and Oppose: “A man and a woman in a suit and gown pose for a photographer in front of the river. They look as though they’re dressed for a wedding. People do that, they get dressed days beforehand and pose as if it’s the actual ceremony.” On their own, the music and vocals would be equally of interest, but brought together there’s a tension that makes Sky Furrows so unique and compelling.

Earlier this month, we caught up with Sky Furrows opening for Oneida at Bushwick’s Rubulad. I was immediately enthralled with the band and picked up their most recent record, Reflect and Oppose, a joint release between Feeding Tube and Cardinal Fuzz so you know to expect quality. The record, I have to say, is even better than the show (partly because you get a lyric sheet to follow along) but the live set you’re hopefully about to listen to is a great entry to the band.
