The Chicago band Twin Peaks have been on the receiving end of much positive hype lately, and after seeing them in action at Mercury Lounge, I can see why. Like youthful compatriots The Orwells, these fellas make hard-hitting, pop-inflected punk rock that’s well-crafted, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and makes for a hell of a night out. Their forthcoming album, Wild Onion was anointed one of Consequence of Sound’s 25 most anticipated albums of summer, and we got a solid preview of many of those songs at this show. Despite the affable nature and could-give-a-fuck presentation of it all, don’t be confused — Twin Peaks are playing for keeps. Look for Wild Onion on August 5, and pre-order it now.
I recorded this set in our usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK41 microphones and the house mix courtesy of Mercury’s head of production, Kevin Mazzarelli. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
